“Don’t act suspicious,” Miranda soothes, laughing at a joke Shepard never made. “Haven’t you been trained for undercover work?”

“Undercover work, sure,” Shepard grunts back, feeling hideously out of place in the black dress that ‘clings to her every curve’, as Liara had informed her earlier. She’d rather have to carry a heavy firearm than dance with the exquisitely expensive set of pearls she’s got around her neck. She’s sure she looks horrible, and her unruly mop of hair must make her stick out like an ugly sore thumb next to Miranda. “Tangoing? Not a fucking chance.”

Miranda giggles, and leans in, lips brushing against the shell of Shepard’s ear-- and she has no idea whether that was on purpose or accidental. “Not much longer now, Commander. I see our target over by that Quasar machine. It shouldn’t be too difficult to convince him to help me have a ‘dalliance’-- after all, he’s been eyeing me up all night.”

“Has he,” Shepard replies, trying very hard to sound non-committal on the subject.

“I’d imagine that a real partner would be something close to jealous if you caught one of the looks he was giving me.” Miranda discreetly waves at the Turian over Shepard’s shoulder with two fingers, somehow managing to make the simple gesture sultry. “Don’t worry, Commander. I know what I’m doing here. I’ll be cheating on you in no time at all.”

Shepard frowns. “And what if I don’t want you to cheat on me?”

“There you go, now you’re getting into character,” Miranda laughs. They keep dancing, and Shepard dips Miranda, hand firm on her back. Miranda must see some doubt in the Turian’s eye, because her face suddenly clouds with urgency and her tone lowers to a near hiss. “Kiss me, Shepard. Quick.”

The Commander is helpless to refrain from doing so, leaning in and kissing the agent as gently as she can. Miranda doesn’t leave the kiss chaste for long, pushing up into Shepard’s embrace and curling her fingers around the back of her neck.

When the music changes and Shepard pulls Miranda back up, the Turian they’re tailing is nowhere to be seen. Shepard swears under her breath, something quick and vulgar she learned back on Akuze. “We lost him. Damn it! Okay, I’ll get EDI to try to locate him again. I’m sorry that kiss move didn’t work, Miranda.”

There’s no reply, and after a moment of tapping away on her omnipad, Shepard glances over at Miranda. Miranda is staring at her with an intensity Shepard’s never seen in her before, and when she speaks she’s absolutely breathless. “That’s... that’s all right, Commander. I didn’t mind at all.”

1. What position does your character sleep in? ( i.e; stomach, side, back, etc. ) Describe why they do this — optional.

she tends to curl up in a corner under her workbench, or in her uncle adreon’s office, or in a fort she made out of all the boxes of batteries she hoards. she has horrible social anxiety, so she figures the less space she takes up to sleep, the safer she’ll be.

2. Does your character have any noteworthy features? Freckles? Dimples? A scar somewhere unusual? etc.

probably her most recognizable feature is her skin, which is roughly the color of red fire. if she turns her head enough, you can also see a little gray oval tucked behind the base of her jaw with a lot of little buttons on it. this is the control node for her hearing aid; she’s completely deaf, and the hearing aid is laced through her skin. salarian auditory nerves exist in a matrix throughout the skin; hearing aids therefore seek to replicate the damaged or nonexistent nerves by lacing synthetic auditory nerves between the layers of the dermis via nanotechnology that is then turned on/off and fine-tuned to the user’s preference using the control node.

3. Does your character have an accent? What does it sound like?

to a human ear, she sounds like she has a new yorker accent. to salarians, it’s the standard (very heavy) mannovai accent.

4. Do they have any verbal tics? Do they have trouble pronouncing certain words or getting their thoughts across clearly?

she's selectively mute; that is, extreme anxiety causes her to only speak in certain situations and to certain people. she starts out effectively completely silent, only speaking to her uncle adreon in hushed whispers and in a salarian closed dialect when around anybody but her family, then gradually starts speaking to more people in a normal level of volume and in a language the translators will pick up as her character arc progresses.

5. What are their chief tension areas?

neck, shoulders, spine, and wrists. she’s a very anxious person, so she’s tense a lot.

6. If you were to pick one song — and only one song — to describe your character, what would it be and why?

mmmMMMMM im kinda torn btw two but i’ll go w runaways by all time low

raels is effectively a runaway from everything she knows. she’s bigender, and would rather hide herself away and invent than be used as a political tool for gaining her family more power through breeding. she’s not sure where she’s going or what she’s going to do besides what her uncles and aunts (adreon, irajii, and co) tell her, but she knows she doesn’t want to be the hazikos’ pawn. (So let's run away. / They will have to find another heart to break. / Why don't we just run away? / Never turn around, no matter what they say. / We'll find our way.)

she had to fake her own death and sever most ties to get away, but she considers the freedom to be worth it. (We hide ourselves right where we stand.) her brother sitrith, the person she’s closest to, is in on the deception, but in order to be convincing, he has to fake like he believes she’s dead. since he’s a popular singer, this means through the media’s coverage of his mourning, she’s constantly reminded of what she gave up. (We're going down this road / With tears in our rear view mirror. / Far from home, / But in the dark, you know, / With me you've got nothing to fear.)

7. How does your character perceive themselves? Positive? Negative? Neutral?

thanks to anxiety, her opinion of herself tends to vary depending on her situation, so it generally balances out into a slightly negative neutral.

5: How old is your OC?

by the time of the reaper war she’s 12 years old!!

15: What makes your OC angry?

recklessness, mostly. she was brought up getting it drilled into her head that she has to be careful, and due to the circumstances of her birth (she was born to a small family, so her being dfab is a Huge Deal bc she and a few sisters are the only females the haziko family has gotten in a while and are their ticket to higher social standing cause of how salarian breeding works), she has to fake her own death to get away, so even after joining the eijalsen crew she has to be very careful with every aspect of her behavior so as not to give away her actual identity.

21: Who is your OCs best friend?

achaikos graat, the eijalsen’s resident hacking prodigy. they eventually end up in a qp relationship.

39: Who is your OCs biggest enemy?

though she’d never tell you specifically, her mother, haziko aerixa. she cares greatly about her mother, but she’s a symbol of everything raels is trying to escape, from the oppressive demands of a low-ranking and small family with few breeding privileges to the identity she left behind. the few family members who know the truth of her fate readily accepted her new name and identity as raels the engineer and inventor, but the rest (which is quite a lot) only know her as yujai the dalatrass’ prospective heir and lost hope for their future.

41: What is your OCs motto about life?

“there’s always something.”

59: What is the first thing that someone would notice about your OC?

probably the look of terror, followed by how she doesn’t talk. she’s selectively mute due to social anxiety, so meeting new people is only ever done with somebody she trusts, like her uncle adreon or her brother sitrith, available to do the talking for her.
