Lemme explain why it makes me really sad that Chris Pine may be gone from the Star Trek universe. The reboot movies reimagined Captain Kirk as this hapless guy who keeps getting his ass kicked, but who ultimately prevails through sheer perseverance. They made him the opposite of the pop-culture Kirk image, the guy who wins every fight with one karate chop and always gets the girl. Pine’s Kirk is the fighter who isn’t bigger, stronger, or more skilled; he simply refuses to fall down. His character arc is about him figuring out that that kind of stubbornness in the service of his own ego is stupid and self-destructive, but in the service of the common good is heroic. And I loved that. Pine is good at that.
