Maho Beach ~ St. Maarten (2010) by Josef Hoflehner ⌘ The price of proximity?
The Ultimate Upgrade
At ninety-two, the tan is deep,
A tropical promise I meant to keep.
I leave St. Maarten’s turquoise shore,
To hear the jet engines’ final roar.
The sand of Maho is blown away,
As Air France climbs through the golden spray.
"Champagne?" she asks with a Gallic smile,
I’ll take a glass for the final mile.
Above the clouds, so white and vast,
I’ve reached the age where the first is last.
A Business Class seat, a soft reclined bed,
While "Paris Tomorrow" spins in my head.
But somewhere over the dark Atlantic,
The pulse goes still—no need to be frantic.
The Camembert’s rich, the Bordeaux is fine,
But I’ve stepped across a different line.
No customs to clear, no bags to reclaim,
Just a silent exit from the earthly game.
A ninety-two-year run, a grand finale,
Far from the beach and the sunset alley.
The ultimate transfer, the purest flight,
From Caribbean sun into endless night.
Direct to the Void, no "Non-Stop" before,
As the cabin crew knocks on a different door.
Paris can wait with its lights and its rain,
I’ve traded the ticket, I’ve skipped the plane.
From Paradise Island to Nothingness fast—
The only Air France flight that’s destined to last.

An American Airlines A319 on final over Maho Beach, St. Maarten
Me getting my snack on in St. Maarten such a beautiful place and the people were so kind. The cheese and cookies I tried were so yummy. I enjoyed exploring the pirate museum and taking a trolley downtown. I was able to visit the Dutch side of the island and hope to visit the French side in the future. There's a lot going on in the world, but you can still have beautiful moments.
