Star Jr., Triton & King Jaguar vs. Disturbio, Nitro & El Coyote

Who’s who?

Star in dark blue, Triton in white & King in red.

Disturbio bald, Nitro with a fuzzy mohawk and Coyote in brown. 

How’s the match?

Very good, tecnicos all got to look good at various points here. I’d like to see Triton higher on the card, but he has gotten pretty good spots in the last few weeks. Being low on a random Puebla hopefully won’t be a common occurrence, this feels more like where someone like Stigma or Pegasso would be. Good stuff, Disturbio doesn’t look bad bald, but seems weird to have him shaved by Metalico... guess they needed to move seats for that Coliseo show?

Hechicero, Sagrado & Misterioso vs. Kraneo, Volcano & Esfinge

Who’s who?

Hechicero in suspender, Sagrado with a white cross on his mask and Misterioso in green mask with threads hanging off it.

Kraneo in yellow, Volcano in red & Esfinge in white. 

How’s the match?

Very good, I’ve said before that Sagrado/Misterioso team enough that they should become a stable. They might even be a good rudo duo to be lackeys for Hechicero as well, who is also a rudo without a stable. I’m always happy to see Kraneo/Volcano too and CMLL is good about not over exposing those two guys... meaning it feels like a treat when they do have a match together. 

Barbaro Cavernario, Ultimo Guerrero & Gran Guerrero vs. Atlantis, Soberano Jr. & Mistico

Who’s who?

Barbaro in bodypaint, Ultimo maskless in blue, Gran in blue masked. 

Atlantis in iconico white mask, Soberano in blue and Mistico in half white/blue. 

How’s the match?

Good, this match was a little shorter than it needed to be. Luckily it wasn’t too annoying that it felt brief because the main event at least went a full length. This felt like it may have been rushed in an attempt to give the main event more time? This was okay, but didn’t get much(if anything) new from anyone here. 

Caristico vs. Volador Jr.

Who’s who?

Caristico in blue masked, Volador Jr. in white/black. 

How’s the match?

Great, with a match like this that is a singles match between two very protected guys... I always worry the ending will be deflating. This could be, but knowing the history between the two it just made me laugh. I can’t be mad by this ending, especially when it feels like before it happened we got a full match. This didn’t feel like Rush kicking someone in the dick early in the 2nd. This match could have worked in more, but felt like a full sized match and not a fun sized one.

Arena Puebla Report! 05/27/2019

Star Jr., King Jaguar & Tigre Rojo Jr. vs. Nitro, El Perverso & Fuerza Chicana

Who’s who?

Star in blue, King maskless in animal print and Rojo in red. 

Nitro with a fuzzy mohawk, Perverso maskless and Fuerza red/white/blue mask.

How’s the match?

Good, Star Jr. makes this worth sitting through if you don’t want to skip anything. Really though he feels like he is in the shallow end of the pool. No offense to these 5 guys, but the rudos are really a trio I want to see much if at all. Maybe Perverso will get better, but I’m just not really hot on the rudos here at all. 

Audaz, Triton & Esfinge vs. Luciferno, Ephesto & Tiger

Who’s who?

Audaz in gold, Triton/Esfinge in matches outfits with Triton in all white boots.

Luciferno/Ephesto have name shirts and Tiger doesn’t.

How’s the match?

Very good, on paper I said that Audaz/Tritons seems like they are a match made and heaven and they really are. Good showing here and really for the most part everything went well in this match. The major exception would be Triton trying to mimic a spot Fenix did at Double or Nothing. He might get it down with time, but certainly didn’t nail it here. 

Caristico, Soberano Jr. & Valiente vs. Mr. Niebla, Cavernario & Negro Casas

Who’s who?

Caristico in white, Soberano in blue and Valiente stount in metalic.

Mr. Niebla in afro, Cavernario the caveman and Casas in plain black.

How’s the match?

Good, a little short, but it did a decent job of building heat for the Negro Casas/Soberano Jr. match that is slated for Sunday. I may need to figure out how to work a VPN so I can watch that match when it get’s put up on NJPW World. This match was too brief to be off too much note. 

Mephisto & Volador Jr. vs. Terrible & Niebla Roja Incredible Pairs Finals(Puebla)

Who’s who?

Mephisto the lone masked man, Volador Jr. in a spiderman like suit.

Rojo in red and Terrible shaved in black. 

How’s the match?

Great, that’s for both the match and making Puebla’s Incredible Pairs Tournament feel meaningful. They had one earlier this year that was only 1 night, but I think it works much better over 3 weeks like this one or the major Incredible Pairs Tournament in Arena Mexico. This tournament didn’t feel like a little brother to the real thing, but rather a peer or sister tournament. A good step forward since Tirantes left who had a hand in how Puebla shows were run. Match is real fun too, but not as great as the Arena Mexico final.

Oro Jr., Magia Blanca & Halcon Suriano Jr. vs. El Hijo del Signo, Sangre Azteca & Disturbio

Who’s who?

Oro in camo, Magia in white & Halcon in purple.

Signo maskless, Sangre in mask/yellow & Disturbio with blond hair. 

How’s the match?

Very good, this action isn’t that much more than one would expect, but it’s great to see these tecnicos get a chance to show what they can do. The amount of time from when Halcon Suriano Jr. changed his name/mask design from Stukita Jr. to this before he started showing up on cards is almost criminal, but finally CMLL seem to be letting him fly. Disturbio has blond hair now, which is a change for the better... maybe? I don’t really know. 

Star Jr. vs. Sagrado Lightning Match

Who’s who?

Star in blue and Sagrado in black.

How’s the match?

Great, Star Jr. is going to be a big... well star someday and this is another step in the right direction for him. Hopefully he’ll be getting more singles matches like this. The outcome here leaves some to be desired, but it doesn’t really feel like it matters when Star Jr. had the performance he did. It takes two to Tango so of course Sagrado should get props too. 

Polvora, Universo 2000 JR. & Tiger vs. Blue Panther, Guerrero Maya Jr. & Audaz

Who’s who?

Polvora in a flamey mask, Universo 2000 in black & Tiger in camo. 

Blue in blue/white, Maya in all white & Audaz in gold. 

How’s the match?

Very good, Tiger knows how to lead a team of rudos and did a great job here. If anyone in CMLL’s midcard deserves a raise both in position on the card and in pay... it might be Tiger. Maya/Audaz did a good job of doing flashy tecnico moves as well and Blue Panther Jr. helped out his team like only he can. 

Mephisto, Hechicero & Rey Bucanero vs. Rey Cometa, Kraneo & Flyer

Who’s who?

Mephisto in demon mask, Hechicero in suspender & Bucanero in facepaint. 

Cometa in more facepaint, Kraneo in bodysuit and Flyer in all black. 

How’s the match?

Good, but wasn’t much for the finish of this match. Just seems sorta simple and something that’d be better suited for an early match, not the semi-main. Hechicero/Cometa bits were fun as was pretty much anything Kraneo did. Still, not a match one needs to see. All these guys can do better and many likely did this week alone. 

Atlantis, Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja vs. Ingobernables(Rush, Terrible & Bestia del Ring)

Who’s who?

Atlantis in white mask, Oro in black/white & Roja in red/white.

Rush/Bestia in wester boots, Terrible without.

How’s the match?

Very good, I might complain about the fact that this feud seems to never end and at this point where will it even go next? Roja/Oro shaved Bestia/Terrible and no one here really has a belt outside of Roja. If this is leading to Roja vs. Rush or Terrible for the belt, than it can be forgiven for continuing on and on like this. Cheeky finish, but I pretty much always expect that from ingobernables and more specifically Rush.

Arena Mexico Super Friday Report! 05/17/2019

Star Jr. & Magia Blanca vs. Akuma & Espanto Jr.

Who’s who?

Star Jr. in blue and Magia in white.

Akuma in facepaint, Espanto in mask, both in black.

How’s the match?

Good, it’s nice to see Star Jr. and Magia Blanca. I can’t tell if the slip up Magia Blanca was a planned thing or just a botch that turned into a story. That ending was interesting whether planned or not. So I’d probably put this slightly above normal Friday Openers, but not my much. Star Jr. is still super slick. 

Marcela, Sanely & Kaho Kobayashi vs. Metalica, Amapola & Tiffany

Who’s who?

Marcela in green, Sanely in blue and Kaho in shorts.

Metalica in red, Amapola/Tiffany in black with Amapola in a t-shirt.

How’s the match?

Very good, the day before this CMLL announced on the 31st they’ll be having a Juicio Final show which will see Kaho vs. Amapola in a hair vs hair match. This match did a good job of showcasing that feud. I don’t know why you’d also book the other blond luchadora who wears black in Tiffany. Could be why Amapola wore a shirt with her name on it, but just seems silly. When Dalys and a few other luchadoras could easily have been in this match. Oh well, still had a good and exciting ending.  

Triton, Esfinge & Rey Cometa vs. Tiger, Felino & Hechicero

Who’s who?

Triton in white, Esfinge in gold & Cometa in facepaint. 

Tiger in mask, Felino without both in black/orange & Hechicero in suspenders. 

How’s the match?

Very good, everyone here went their all, but some may have been to excited. Cometa’s dive looked painful on landing despite being a great tornillo. Hechicero also ran to the back after Cometa did a tornillo on him in the ring and Esfinge was checked on post match on the outside... so sorta hurts the match that the match hurt so many people in it. Felino/Tiger as tag team challengers for Esfinge/Triton sounds pretty good to me. 

Soberano Jr.  vs. Negro Casas Lightning Match

Who’s who?

Soberano Jr. masked, Negro Casas not.

How’s the match?

Great, post match the arena was electric. Another classic singles between these two. If this showing didn’t prove that Negro Casas should get a title match vs. Soberano Jr... I don’t know what will. They are having a special show on the 31st and I realize that there are already 2 singles matches on that card, but CMLL should really give these two a 2/3 falls title match already. 

Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero & Euforia vs. Mascara Ano 2000, Mephisto & Ephesto 

Who’s who?

Ultimo maskless with his gang Los Guerreros Laguneros in all in green/black Euforia in full pants & Gran in shorts.

Ano 2000 maskless with silver masked Mephisto and round horned Ephesto.

How’s the match?

Very good, though this like Kaho/Amapola earlier in the night did a good job of building to the hair match this timo being Mascara Ano 2000 vs. Ultimo Guerrero. The finish might feel like a cop out, but no finish would matter as none ever do leading to a hair match. I don’t want all matches in this build to end in DQ, but nothing was on the line here... so hard to get mad about. 

Mistico, Caristico & Valiente vs. Barbaro Cavernario, Sanson & Cuatrero 

Who’s who?

Mistico in white blue, Caristico in white and Valiente in metallic blue. 

Barbaro the caveman, Sanson with white pants and black boots with Cuatrero in white boots with black pants. 

How’s the match?

Good, this was a quick match, but it’s set up for a much better main event the following week. Barbaro unmasking Mistico to go 2-0 in the main event. Perhaps his cheap tactic will bite him in the ass though as Mistico wants to go one on one next week. Doesn’t seem to be a championship mask, but surely if Mistico proves to be Barbaro’s better that will open up a title opportunity.

Arena Mexico New Values Report! 04/23/2019

Magia Blanca, Star Jr. & Pegasso vs. Metalico, Nitro & Sangre Azteca

Who’s who?

Magia in white, Star in blue and Pegasso in black/white/blue with white threads hanging off the back of his mask.

Metalico maskless, Nitro has a fuzzy mohawk and Sangre Azteca in yellow/black.

How’s the match?

Very good, we saw the return of Magia who had a good showing here. He doesn’t seem to have missed a step since being out on injury. Star Jr. as always is a treat to watch and the tecnico team won here, which is nice, but doesn’t really matter despite being Magia’s return match this is a low card showing on a Tuesday show and no one is really chalking these tallies up with much seriousness. 

Polvora, Universo 2000 Jr. & Kawato San vs. Fuego, Flyer & Drone

Who’s who?

Polvora in flame mask, 200 Jr. in silver mask and Kawato in blue/silver.

Fuego in orange/yellow, Flyer in blue and Drone in his normal red/white/blue.

How’s the match?

Good, but this match is basically a grouping of guys CMLL has no plans for and this match didn’t seem to change that by any means. Still some good good matches, but investment is hard when even a lighting match between any of these six would be pretty directionless. Hopefully someone in here breaks out in the next year or so, but I’m not holding my breath despite loving Fuego. 

Rey Cometa vs. Templario lightning match

Who’s who?

Cometa in facepaint and Templario in silver/red.

How’s the match?

Great, this is the best Cometa has looked since coming back with his new gear and look. A great lighting match that felt like two titan’s clashing, which is what you want from a lightning match. Not one titan smashing a midcarder or two midcarders no one cares about butting heads until someone comes out on top. This was fantastica and shows why Templario is one of the fastest rising stars in CMLL and why Rey Cometa is one of the best hands on the roster over the last 5-10 years. Good action, a must watch match. 

Sanson, Shocker & Rey Bucanero vs. Audaz, Kraneo & Blue Panther

Who’s who?

Sanson the lone masked rudo, Shocker blonde & Bucanero with face paint.

Audaz in gold, fat Kraneo and maskless blue Panther. 

How’s the match?

Good, but not as good as the match the previous night featuring Shocker/Bucanero. I do think CMLL is smart to pair Bucanero/Shocker on back to back nights with an over young rudo who can help carry the match. This match not being as good as the previous night also likely has to do with trading out two younger more agile guys for Blue Panther and Kraneo, even if I love both of those names with all my heart. 

Rush, Caristico & Titan vs. Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero & Euforia

Who’s who?

Rush with long hair, Caristico in gold/white & Titan in white maske.

Ultimo maskless, Gran/Euforia both in mask with Euforia in full pants. All in blue/black/white gear. 

How’s the match?

Good, but a little too brief. Felt a bit phoned in for a main event, but it’s a Tuesday Night and it’s not as though anything of note was on the line. Los Guerreros Laguneros lately have been getting 2 fall victories left and right. I hope they get upset by a 2-0 loss soon and we can get a proper trios title match from them. If that’s what this is leading to it will make more sense. Otherwise it’s just a pattern without a purpose and seems a bit silly since everyone knows Ultimo calls some shots backstage.

Arena Mexico Super Friday Report! 03/22/2019

Star Jr. & Stigma vs. Grako & El Coyote

Who’s who?

Star Jr. in blue/red & Stigma in red/black.

Grako in green/gold and Coyote in brown.

How’s the match?

Very good, I thought about just giving this a good rating, but decided to bump it up a rating. The 1st round was filled with them trying new stuff, but only half of it landed well or was filmed well. So a decent amount looked awkward, but both 2nd and 3rd falls went off without a hitch. Hope all 4 of these guys climb up the cards in following months years, see lots of potential in them. 

Kaho Kobashi, Marcela & Mystique vs. Dalys, Amapola & Reyna Isis

Who’s who?

Kaho in 2 piece, Marcla in black, Mystique in black with mask.

Dalys in 2 piece/muscular, Amapola in black with pin sash & Reyna in blue.

How’s the match?

Very good, one of the better luchadora matches of recent memory. Nice to see Kaho as she is here on tour and seemed to just go awol for a week or two. This match is shorter than it needed to be, but seemingly spells out a path for Kaho to get a singles match, which should be fun. Marcela/Dalys prove to be two of the best on the luchadora roster as they are billed. The shortness of this match meant most of the fat was cut, which is a plus in my book. 

Stuka Jr., Flyer & Audaz vs. Polvora, Vangellys & Kawato San

Who’s who?

Stuka in blue/black, Flyer in blue & Audaz in gold.

Polvora with a flame mask, Vangellys in red and Kawato in blue/silver. 

How’s the match?

Good, which to remind people means par for my rating scale. This is about what you’d expect from these names. I love the tecnico team, but the rudo side is the definition of hodge podge and it shows throughout the match. If you are a Kawato San fan and want to see more of him, the Tuesday match he had was a better showing for him. This is my low point for this show, but still has a good Audaz moment or two. 

Barbaro Cavernario vs. Forastero

Who’s who?

Barbaro maskless, Forastero masked in all white. 

How’s the match?

Great, honestly this match did more for me than the Tuesday night championship match between Lee/Mephisto which felt like a rehash of their match from the previous year. It helps that these two have met less one on one and that this had a surprising outcome and set up another match with more rounds and more stakes for next Friday. Money was thrown into the ring here and the promise of a longer match seems like it’ll deliver. 

Angel de Oro, Niebla Roja & Titán vs. Mr. Niebla,  Terrible & Bestia del Ring

Who’s who?

Oro in gold, Roja in red and Titan in silver mask.

Bestia/Terrible bald with Bestia in western boots and Niebla with an afro.

How’s the match?

Very good, but I’m not sure where else this feud can go. Roja/Terrible have been named as the 1st team of Incredible Pairs. I hope they don’t win, but that might be how CMLL saves this feud and gets both men over. Seems like Terrible needs time off as his brace/medical taped arm doesn’t seem 100% and banking on him to do great in another big match seems like it could be a mistake given how H2L ended. Worst case scenario the finals of that tournament would be Oro/Bestia vs. Roja/Terrible, which we should all pray doesn’t happen. H2L wasn’t the blow off CMLL wanted though, so it seems they will find some other way to cap off this feud. 

Caristico, Volador Jr. & Diamante Azul vs. Ultimo Guerrero, Euforia & Gran Guerrero

Who’s who?

Caristico in white, Volador Jr. in red/white and Azul in blue.

Ultimo maskless, Gran in an Ultimo mask design and Euforia masked an the biggest of the trio. 

How’s the match?

Good, but CMLL should have shaken the tecnico team up more. This is just the title challenge we got last week except Azul in place for Dragon Lee and for that reason it felt very similar and not all that exciting since Guerreros have been battling teams consisting of Volador Jr./Caristico nearly every week for a month now. Was a poor decision to go to this well again, give some other tencios a chance. Think this match and the previous one would have been helped plenty by swapping the tecnico teams.
