I’ve officially started on book 2! Here are the first 2 pages of Star Killers
“You know, I used to hate you, when you were a child. Absolute loathing. I saw a pitiful creature, wasting such a gift, such an honour, on whatever stupid, reckless venture your ignorant curiosity next led you...”
Meet Ahira idu Ren’esyani, Star Keeper of the Lyrae Haven and the True Guardian of Mist’s Lock!
Or, well. Ex-Star Keeper of the Lyrae Haven.
Leila Nikolaeva’s kinda responsible for that.
“... It reminded me too closely of myself, I suppose.”
Theme: Varien ft. Skyelle - Sacred Woods
Pronouns: They/Them/Their or Ve/Vem/Vir
Age: ... uh. Does not apply? They’re... kinda dead. Died when they were close to three centuries old. (100 siren years = about 10 human ones.)
Siren Type: Forest; freshwater but used magic methods to adapt to survival in saltwater.
Magic Colour: Vivid leaf-green
Magic Level: Near highest rank (Quill still needs to come up with a ranking system -u-), direct and pure bloodline descendant of an original Alpha.
Base Appearance: Based off of a golden metallic half-moon betta: golden scales that shine like the metal; labyrinth gill structure, so they require oxygen from the air as well as the water; and incredibly large, round, golden fins (and a fake ego just as big).
Ahira was a Star Keeper in a Forest Haven that no longer exists. Star Keepers are just what they sound like: keepers of the stars, or as is believed by sirens, recorders for the dead. They keep maps of the night sky, and interpret both magical and astronomical phenomena as predictions of the future and guidance from the dead. Their magic is so concentrated because their bloodlines directly link back to one of the Ascendant’s Alphas (the first sirens created by the Ascendants), and due to this they are able to see and hear loose souls, to guide them back to their proper place among the stars.
But what happens when the Star Keeper’s soul itself becomes lost?
Happy WBW from writingamongthecoloredroses! Does your world have any beliefs/myths/stories about life and death?
Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! I don’t usually participate but I mean... why not? This is a particularly important question to my wip, so!
First off, technically One Siren’s Soul takes place on Earth during the Golden Age of Piracy---meaning, for humans, many of the beliefs towards life and death remain the same as they were in real history!
But for the sirens. Well, that’s when it gets interesting.
There are many various beliefs among sirens, especially with Light sirens, but for the general ones that the main crew stumbles upon (or believes themselves), the stars play a huge role!
When a siren dies, their bodies return to the oceanic elements that their magic connects to. Gemstones and glass and driftwood and sea foam, among many others. And I mean that quite literally. But their soul, the mind and thoughts and ability to regenerate magic, that goes to the stars. Each pinprick of light in the night sky is a soul, whether one of the ancients or your own great grandparents, watching over you and guiding you.
Star Keepers are living sirens with an immense power. They keep charts of the stars, recording astronomical phenomena and making predictions based on the signs left by their ancestors. The stars are used by sirens to navigate, both on a physical and metaphorical path.
But sometimes things can go wrong. There are rules, with magic. If one is broken, if a curse is cast that goes against them, then a soul can become... stuck. A forbidden spell can keep a soul from joining the stars, as it anchors that soul to something on Earth. They’re left to wander, driven insane by the inability to interact with their surroundings despite witnessing everything, the inability to be perceived in the slightest. These are called lost souls!
Thanks for the ask~
Another notable face Gavin sees upon entering the bridge is the ship's pilot, Nikola Yakimenko.
Nikola is a rookie Star Keeper officer, fresh out of the academy. Having struggled in most other subjects, she excelled specifically in flying, a singleminded passion she developed growing up on an airfield surrounded by old planes and spaceships her dad fixed up.
Nikola is a Human, about nineteen or twenty, who grew up on the planet Pindar Volga. She is small and scrawny, with not much skill at fighting, but near prodigious skill as a pilot, pulling the Arrowhead and its crew out of a lot of tough situations. She has a bright and cheerful personality, with an infectious friendliness to her that makes even her most hardened crewmates love her.

Sent to let Gavin know they'd arrived, Long Tail leads the captain up to the ship's bridge, where he is greeted by the rest of his crew. The first to greet him, naturally, is his first officer.
Aghri kei KibaZhoka is the first officer of the Arrowhead ship. Often calm and level-headed, he frequently acts as a voice of reason for Gavin as they navigate treacherous situations. He is well-known by his peers for the extensive garden of alien plants he keeps in his quarters, plant care a major part of his species' religion.
Aghri is a Witani in his mid twenties from the planet Wakar, the first planet invaded by Woraugenns during the war fifteen years before. During that time, he watched his brother die and hundreds suffer, leading him to choose a life as a Star Keeper, to prevent anyone else from enduring such pain. He is a skilled combatant and wise strategist.

As Gavin gets ready for his first mission, he recieves a knock on his door. Outside, he finds a small yellow lizard that spins his tail like a propeller to fly.
This is Long Tail, real name Otkin Manar, the communications officer of the starship Arrowhead. Long Tail has been Gavin's best friend for years, having been adopted by the Kent family after his own family were tortured and killed by the mad scientist Red Eyes. Long Tail and Gavin grew up together, developing a close bond of brotherhood in the years after.
Long Tail is a Lenghu, in his species' rough equivalent of early twenties. He is a polyglot, able to speak twenty-nine different languages fluently, a skill he uses in his position on the ship. He often acts as the comic relief of the crew, cracking jokes to make those around him smile.

Far from Hedes, we then see the starship Arrowhead, a ship in the Star Keeper Corps, a league of peacekeepers who maintain order in the United Worlds. Inside the ship, preparing for his first mission as commanding officer, we find the ship's captain.
Gavin Kent is the son of legendary war hero Orion Kent, grandson of admiral Leonard Kent, and the descendant of a long line of notable figures in the United Worlds' history. Intimidated by the long heritage he follows, he strives to be the best captain he can be and prove himself worthy of their legacy.
Gavin is a Human, in his early to mid twenties, who grew up on the planet Alpha Centauri. Despite his self-doubts, he is a skilled warrior in combat, and he holds a great deal of compassion for those around him, a trait that ultimately earns him the love of his crew in the end.
