Drone over Starfort city of Naarden. The only town in the Gooi to receive city rights was Naarden, which went on to grow into a fortified garrison town with a textile industry.

Featuring reinforced walls and a moat, Naarden is an illustration of a star fort. There have been various restorations to the moat and fortifications, most notably during the French era (1795-1814). An alliance of Dutch, Prussian, and Russian forces liberated the Netherlands during the Battle of Leipzig (1813). Naarden was under siege for months during this time because the French commander didn't think Napoleon had been taken prisoner. The French soldiers retreated honorably from the city in May 1814.
