Hi, I'm writing a story with merfolk and I'm trying to figure out what I would call the non-binary merpeople. I was wondering if you had any thoughts? Currently I'm using mernix (nixxie is a merlike creature in I believe German mythology) but considered merperson, mer, and merson. Sorry if I'm bothering you.
OOOOh, mernix sounds interesting! I’ve actually never heard of a nixxie before, so that could be a really cool way to talk about a nonbinary merperson/merson/mer etc. :O
I may borrow that in the future, if I ever need to have a nonbinary merperson? possibly?
But honestly? I’d say you could use all of those terms, interchangeably, with no inaccuracy whatsoever. The beauty of being nonbinary is that- well, also it’s the curse- It’s not a solid “third category” of gender. It’s a huge umbrella term for every gender that isn’t “man” or “woman.” THUS, all of those terms could be the preferred term to use for a particular group of nonbinary mernix or merpeople - because they’re preferred for varied genders that still fall under the larger “nonbinary” umbrella.
However, for readability’s sake, and to hold true to typical English-language conventions, I’d say - when making general statements about nonbinary merfolk, or a merperson who’s gender is as-of-yet unspecified: Do it like you would for a person IRL, just tag it with the “mer” prefix.
Examples: This group of nonbinary (mer) people. That (mer)person over there. (cat voice: this is my human/mer)
and etc.
However, if you’ve already established the word “mernix” to mean nonbinary merpeople, that’s also fine!! Just be sure to treat it like “merman” and “mermaid” and don’t forget plurals and grammatical constructions using it!
Good luck on your story!!! (and JFKAHSDKJF you’re not bothering me! I’m happy to answer questions like this ^_^)
Logo done via edit for @starlit-winter again when my pen was broken. But it was fun!
Did another version but the star wasn't as visible, this one was better.
For that give me a character thing. How about Callum?
GIVE ME A CHARACTER;
and I’ll break their ass down:
Callum
How I feel about this character
I think Callum’s a total cutie! There is no character more earnest and well-meaning than this sweet mage-boi. I feel like his arc of seeking both identity and belonging resonates deeply with many of us and no matter what happens he’s always doing his best, not only for him but for everyone around him. Precious boy. All the people I ship romantically with this character I ship both Rayla and Claudia with him. I feel they both present a very unique and interesting relationship opportunity and they both mesh well with Callum on different levels.
My non-romantic OTP for this character Broyals OTP. I love a good sibling duo. Claudia and Soren too TAT.
My unpopular opinion about this character I’m not the biggest fan of the whole ‘dude accomplishes thing in a week that likely millions have spent their entire lives trying and failing to do. I get that plot gotta plot but it kinda cheapens the world-building to me to have no one in living memory be capable of doing this and suddenly ‘totally-not-the-chosen-one’ just walks in with a smoothie all ‘what, like its hard?’ Just a pet peeve of mine.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
This is really just an extension of my last one. @v1ren brought up to me how it could have made the plot feel so much less rushed if they did a time-lapse at some point during the third season, and I feel that would have made Callum’s achievement too feel at least a little more earned. Just a personal preference again.
Yeah sure you're welcome to use it! I spent like twenty minutes researching terms and stuff cause I couldn't figure out what to call them. The character is mentioning them in a "two mermen, a mermaid, and a mer..." So I was trying to figure out a term to go there. Thanks for answering!
yeah, of course!! nonbinary stuff can be tricky because it’s such a big sea of....individual, different genders XD.
and thank you!!! /TERM SNATCH!/ i very much like mernix :D
You're a fairy and water type! Pretty and can kick dragon's butts. And good in water.
