I had angered something, that much was for sure. Turned the heat on the stove for low, walked away, only to have my food burning away sometime later. The heat had been turned to high. First I chalked it up to a simple exhausted mistake on my part. But as time went on, I realized that wasn’t the case. Shoelaces tied together, the remote to the TV disappearing off the arm of the chair; only to reappear across the room on the floor....
House Gnomes? Fairies? Something small had a grudge....I lay down to bed after a long day, and closed my eyes. Whispering. Tiny whispers all around me, all with Spanish accents. Was I losing my mind? I tried switching the light on, but found it wouldn’t obey. Damn....must be unplugged.
The whispering became hushed laughter. Something sharp bit into my hand as I fumbled for the cord. I pulled my hand back, using my phone to inspect the damage. Teeth marks, very small, but they had definitely broken skin. I went to the bathroom to wash it off and get a bandaid. Maybe I should call the doctor in the morning...If I didn’t know better, I’d say miniature Salazar and his crew had found their way into my room.....
I laid back down, adjusting the sheets. Something not of significant size, slid off the covers with a yelp and there was a gentle thump on the floor.
“What in hell is going on??”
But in my ear, a gentle voice spoke.
“Shhhhhhhhhhh.....it is nothing senorita.....nada....go to sleep....fear not.....worry not...your dreams await you....”
The voice was so familiar.....but the pull to sleep it created was too great. I felt myself relaxing and settling down; the voice’s magic taking hold and making everything seem alright.
“Eh, move your hair out of the way too...you have a disturbing quantity of hair...tie it back....”
I yawned, frowning at his words.
“Why do I have to tie my hair back....what does that have to do with sleep?”
A tiny yet strong smack came to the other side of my face.
“Do not question El Capitan!”
“Lesaro....we need her to sleep, otherwise this will take all night.”
I frowned more, eyes half shut. Lesaro....why would he be....
“Huh? What will take all night?”
“Nothing, senorita! Now....you are getting sleepy....veeeerrrryy sleepy....pero don’t forget to tie your hair back...arms above the covers, wrists turned up...there’s a good girl....”
Nodding with eyes still half shut, I reached for the table; grabbing a tie and doing as I was instructed. Laying back down, sleep soon found me. There was slight discomfort though. Felt like many sets of very small teeth piercing my skin.
My dream was strange too. My cat pushed his way into my room, saw dozens of tiny vampires feeding from his owner, and promptly lost his shit. I remember he locked eyes with....wow....that one looked just like Salazar....who hissed and swiped to get him away.
“Get lost gato! She dressed like a pirate for Halloween!”
Angus lunged, chasing them all away as they scattered like mice. Moss though, remained.
“I’ll just seal up these wounds! Don’t want her getting an infection....”
I woke up slightly, yawned, stretched, and rolled over on top of him.
