Steele is an Alaskan Malamute and champion sled dog who lives in Nome, Alaska. As a champion, he's very popular among the dogs in town, but the one dog he has his sights on, Jenna, has no interest in him. Steele is very self-centered and arrogant, thriving on the admiration he receives, and charming as he can be when trying to get what he wants, he's a rude and even cruel individual. When an outbreak of diptheria threatens the children of Nome, Steele wants to lead the team that brings back the medicine, not for the good of the children, but for his own glory. He's so desperate to prove himself he puts his whole team at risk trying to get the delivery back, eventually abandoning them all and returning home to deliver the news that the rest didn't make it.
In the end, Balto successfully leads the team home with the medicine, and Steele is left alone and disgraced for his lying and cowardice.
