Reeling from the events of the last four years, Bucky struggles to adapt to his homecoming while Steve agonizes over how to help his friend with the lack of resources that were available in the 21st century.

Peggy’s concern for Steve grows as he pushes himself to his limits. Ana and Angie conspire to get Edwin to take it easy.

As he relearns who he was and who he wants to be, Bucky takes a keen interest in Steve and Peggy’s relationship while Edwin plans the latest Stark Gala Extravaganza.

Steve and Peggy both attempt to hide their personal struggle with the yearly anniversary of the Valkyrie crash from each other. Meanwhile Angie mediates a dispute between Howard, Jack and Bucky.

S1 E18: Breaking Bread

Peggy and Jack bond when they go undercover. Ana and Edwin invite Steve over for tea.

S1 E19: The Handcuff Games

Peggy keeps hitting a wall in her hunt to end Leviathan until she gets help from an unexpected source.

S1 E20: The Enemy of My Enemy

Peggy confides in Howard about her feelings toward her future at the SSR while Jack begrudgingly asks Steve for help.

S1 E21: Now or Never

With the gaps in Bucky’s memory returning at a steadier rate, the SSR team puts their plan to dismantle both Leviathan and the Red Room for good into action.

S1 E22: A Second Chance (Season Finale)

On the one-year anniversary of Steve’s return, Peggy receives some unexpected news. Phillips and Howard reveal the details of a top secret project.

Steggy Week 2022 - Day 1 (Inspired By)

@doctorhelena has some great outsider POV fics. For today's theme I was inspired by The SSR Supply Closet Crisis, in which Private Lorraine cannot replenish her office supplies without walking in on Steve and Peggy having a moment.

Steggy Week 2k22, day 2 Prompt: Favorite era

Summary: Steve, Peggy, and a nickname.

The first time, he doesn’t even think she notices that she’s said it.

It’s perfectly understandable, considering that she’s doing about fifteen things at once: gathering supplies with the phone cord stretched taut, berating him while she finishes speaking to Howard, already beginning to think up plausible explanations for the damage that they can put forward tomorrow.

So he isn’t certain that she really registers what she is saying as she tucks the phone against her shoulder and says forthrightly to him, “This is going to hurt - I’m afraid that your body has likely started healing over it already. On your front now, my darling.”

The words spin over in his head as he lies on their towel-covered couch, his face turned toward the cushion where she cannot see his expression (although she’s also still fairly busy regardless, having added diligently digging the stray bullet out of his shoulder to her task list).

My darling. She said it so casually, as if it is habit, as if it has come out of her mouth a hundred times before, although he knows for certain that he never heard it, not during the war and not so far since he came back.

My darling. Face pressed into his folded arms, he smiles.

There are plenty of names between them. She might be Peggy or Peg to him on any ordinary day, “yes, ma’am, Director Carter” if she’s put her foot down in some argument that they are having, “yes, ma’am, Director Carter” if his low-pitched voice is responding to a command of hers in the dim light of their bedroom (or their kitchen, or her office…). To her, he is Steve, or sharp-edged “Steven” when she is irritated with him, or crisp “Captain Rogers” when they are arguing in front of others, or “would that be suitable, Captain?” when she is propositioning him.

And he loves them all, because they are all facets of this life that they are building into together, because there was so long, before and after, that he did not think they would have such a chance.

He still has his favorite.

“I’m afraid the game’s mine again, my darling,” Peggy says, not sounding apologetic at all as she places her final tile and scans over the Scrabble board with satisfaction. When she looks up and catches him ducking against his smile, she narrows her eyes and says, “If you’re intending to challenge, I’d recommend against it. ‘Frowzy’ is most certainly a word, and simply because you’re irritated over losing—”

He stands, collects her teacup and the plates from their slices of after-dinner cake from their favorite bakery, leans down and kisses her briefly.

“I haven’t lost anything,” he says, soft and close, before he takes the dishes to the sink.

There is nothing which erases the residual pain each time he pulls himself from a dream, unable to shake the helplessness over his failure to keep Thanos from snapping his fingers, trying more and more desperately to remember exactly how Natasha’s face looked the last time he saw her, shivering as the battlefield smells, past and still to come and always somehow the same, linger in his nostrils. There is nothing which can make him stop feeling powerless during the moments when he wakes to find Peggy lying stiff and open-eyed in the dark or trembling in a nightmare, trapped by her own hauntings.

Her voice - “I know. I know. But you’re here, my darling, you’re here and safe with me” or “Yes, I—Yes, I think I’d like it if you held me, my darling” - even if it erases nothing, it eases things, each time.

He doesn’t think he could have imagined, back during the war, the chance to see Peggy truly disheveled, or even the slightest bit removed from the pin-straight perfection that was her hallmark. Now he’s grown accustomed to rolling over to find her without even her signature red lip, to listening as she grumbles, tousle-haired, over why the latest disaster couldn’t have at least spared her favorite skirt suit, to watching her gently remove her makeup and apply Pond’s each night. Still, he doesn't think he’s ever seen her quite like this: curls turned limp and sweaty, the color siphoned from her face, her muscles shaky and drained, everything about her brilliant with joy.

“Here you are, my darling,” she says softly, her strong and gentle hands reaching out to place their child into his arms. He doesn’t know which one of them she’s talking to. He doesn’t care.

She catches on sometime. He knows her too well to have thought that she never would, although he can’t tell precisely when it happened.

“I used to say it in my head, you know,” she says one night into the starlit dark of their backyard. She turns her head toward him; he sees the glint of her eyes. Even without explanation, he understands what she is talking about. “I said it in my head during the war, and I said it aloud after. But in all that time, it was as if it was only for myself. I never thought—I’m so terribly glad that I got to say it to you.”

He nods and takes her hand, presses her knuckles to his lips, hearing the echo of the name in their shared and sharing silence.

There is nothing overt that changes after that, no further discussion about it, no increased frequency or awkward avoidance of the term. It comes out the way it always has: on ordinary nights and during the grim, desperate moments that they have never been able to escape, distracted and with deep, scraping emotion.

And he treasures each time more because of the responding spark from her, because it is something that they are doing together, this beautiful change, this small piece of loving and being loved in return.

He has been so many things to so many people, has been referred to in so many different ways. It warms him to know that quietly and above all things, he is beloved by this woman.

Through the years, no matter how many times he hears it, that does not fade.
