La visión 3D ha dado a los humanos la capacidad de calcular distancias, profundidad y visualizar objetos en movimiento. Es un proceso complejo que involucra tanto a los ojos como al cerebro. Cada ojo percibe una imagen ligeramente diferente y es el cerebro el que las fusiona, haciendo esta visión binocular mucho más efectiva. Basta taparse un ojo para comprobar cómo se vería el mundo en dos dimensiones. Por tanto, es necesario que exista una coordinación neuronal entre los dos ojos para que la visión 3D se produzca correctamente. La visión 3D o estereopsis no es una propiedad inherente al nacimiento. De forma natural se desarrolla en los primeros 6 meses de vida. Pero nacer con estrabismo o con un número elevado de dioptrías, entre otras causas, puede impedir su correcto desarrollo. Hay un porcentaje de la población que no tiene estereopsis. Es difícil de cuantificar porque muchos simplemente ignoran que carecen de ella.
