Stetson: 2023-24 Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball Champions
DELAND — DeLand is a basketball town. At least for the time being.
ASUN Conference leading scorer Jalen Blackmon erupted for 43 points, 34 of which came in the second half, and the Hatters hit just enough free throws down the stretch to preserve a 94-91 win over Austin Peay in the ASUN Championship game on Sunday afternoon in the Edmunds Center.
With the win, Stetson earned its first trip to the NCAA Tournament in school history and will await its first-round matchup next Sunday in the NCAA Selection Show.
Stetson trailed by as many as 10 in the first half but Blackmon caught fire in the second, scoring 16 straight Hatter points to keep Stetson afloat and hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to preserve the win. A last-ditch heave from the hash for the Governors went begging as the horn sounded and a near-capacity crowd exploded, rushing the court to celebrate.
Aubin Gateretse and Stephan Swenson each had 13 points for Stetson with Alec Ogleby adding 10. Sai Witt led Austin Peay with 28 points to go with 10 rebounds. Dezi Jones (17), Demarcus Sharp (16), Isaac Haney (13) and Ja'Monta Black (11) each hit double figures for the Governors as well.

Three in the Key: UCF Hoops Struggles, But Subdues Stetson
Three in the Key: @UCF_MBB Struggles, But Subdues @StetsonMBB. #UCF
It was not pretty, and it was a lot closer than it probably should have been. But UCF’s men’s basketball team pulled away late from old-school rival Stetson to win its season opener, 64-55. Freshman B.J. Taylor led the Knights in scoring with 14 points in his first collegiate game, and Shaheed Davisalso scored 13 on 4/11 from the field, and also pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds in his first…

Who wants to see them?
The Stetson Hatters (3-2) will face an early season test when they meet up with the number three offensive team in the country, the 9th ranked Florida Gators (4-1). Tip-off is set for Monday, 7:00 pm ET at Amway Arena in Orlando, Florida.
NCAA basketball odds are currently unavailable but check the college basketball betting lines closer to game time and the odds should become available. Obviously sportsbooks will back Florida as a heavy double digit favorite in this game. That being said, the Hatters have already faced top level competition in #24 Florida State Seminoles and put up a galiant effort, losing by 13 points, 79-66. There's one distinct difference between these two teams. Florida features a high-powered offense while Stetson lacks offensive options. Thunderous attack The Gators offense will be looking to take a bite out of the Hatters defense as they rank 3rd in the nation in points at 89.8 points per game. The Gators are coming off of a 107 point performance and are also efficient from the field, shooting 49.4% (26th ranked) This is a team that can do it all. They're tops in points, rebounds, and dishing the ball. Accompanied by a solid defense, this is the equation for success, and Stetson will have their hand's full when they travel to Florida. Young and deep The Gators are laced with experienced, but young players for the present and the future. Only Brooklyn, NY native Erving Walker is in his last year of eligibility, and he offers senior leadership that a talented team like this will need. Walker can do it all, averaging 12.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game. His shooting leaves a lot to be desired, but his level of effort compensates for it. The primary go to guy on the offensive end is Florida native, junior guard Kenny Boynton. Boynton has had a great career at Florida and has stepped his game up a notch this season. He leads the team in scoring with 19.6 points per game and is a knockdown shooter, averaging an amazing 53.3 % from the field and 51.4 % from 3 point range. Boynton is going to give opposing defenses fits this seasons because there's no defense that can affect his shooting touch. Big future In only his freshman year, guard Brad Beal has already left his imprint on the Gators basketball team. He's an active player that can mend the glass at just 6 foot 3, averaging 5.8 rebounds per game while managing to be the second option of offense at 16 points per game, and he will be a nightmare for Stetson. How long can the Gators hold onto to this young freshman phenom before the NBA gets a hold of him? The Florida Gators are deep team, frequently substituting with atleast ten players getting normal touches. They keep their players fresh at all times. Nine players on the team average 16.8 minutes per game or more, and freshman Brad Beal is the only player to average over 30 minutes per game. They have 6 different legitimate offensive options to go to that average in double figure points. With 6 foot 9, 245 pound sophomore Patric Young leading the way protecting the glass, this is a killer team on offense and defense. The Gators, as a team, average 43 rebounds per game and don't expect the Hatters to get many second chances. This will be a problem because Stetson isn't proficient and efficient on the offensive end, ranking 164th in points scored and ranking 141st in field goal percentage. "The A Team" The combination of 6 foot 9, 260 Adam Pegg and sophomore guard Aaron Graham are the two main sources of offense on the team. Pegg averages 12.6 points,4.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. This is a big fellow that can shoot. He averages 55.3 % from the field and amazing 62.5% from 3 point range (not bad for 260 pounds). Graham is the opposite of Pegg in both stature and shooting percentage, only averaging 36% from the field. Part of this can be attributed to a 4 for 17 performance against Florida State. Graham now faces another top level team, and the question is "can he forget about his past performance against the Seminoles and play with confidence here?"
Aaron Graham is a productive player, averaging 11.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. Turnovers (3.6 per game) are another facet of his game that Graham will have to be disciplined with in order to prevent this game from being a blowout. No "I" in Team This is a lethargic team that lacks the art of hustling. In 5 games, the Hatters have managed only 3 blocks, 6 steals, and a grand total of 14 assists. Where's the team play? Where's the hustle? Outcome of the game After providing you with the last bit of information, you know where I'm going with this. Stetson hung in there against teams that are at their level, but their lack of hustle and team play is attrotious and flaotut embarrassing, keeping them from ever becoming a top level team.
Florida is full of runners and gunners that can shoot, protect the glass, and play defense. Florida will destroy this team. When the betting odds come out, take the Gators as your NCAA Basketball pick. Pick- Florida Gators
This shot ended up deciding the conference championship and sent this team to the finals where they won!!!
GO HATTERS!!!
