CAN YOU HEAR ME SCREAMING ALL THE WAY IN PHILADELPHIA CUZ I AM
Generally I think it's because the fanbase is on the younger side (?) (not really an excuse I mean I was 13 when I read these for the first time) but a lot of people seem to really not understand David Eastman as a character.
Yes, the spoiled rich boy archetype is very popular right now - but that is not who David is. David is a victim of neglect and emotional abuse from a man who happen to be rich and his alcoholic mother who was also taken advantage by a man who happens to be rich. Edward King being rich is important to the way his character functions (he's Donald Trump), but David having money is basically inconsequential to his character besides in how it changes Stevie's view of him.
Stevie is an unreliable narrator, she's also a teenage girl - she's very blatant about not understanding things. It's up to the reader to read between the lines. She thinks about David being rich kind of a lot, because money is a pretty big part of her life. But David - what, he buys the Sherlock coat and he doesn't get expelled. That's basically it. He gets offered university cash in book 4 and doesn't even take it.
And David like a political terrorist, for the record, he isn't spoiled or morally bankrupt due to his connection to King, he hates the guy (as one would, again, Trump). He sabotages his political campaign and goes on the road. That's Cool and Sick.
He's sort of a dick to Stevie, this is true. Stevie also likes it. David is a challenge and that what Stevie needs. If we're going to dislike they're relationship really it's more about Stevie crossing his boundaries than he crossing hers. People seem to forgive the whole going through his computer thing because she was right, but David was trying to keep that a secret for a reason. Ellie was the only person he told, his dead best friend.
David isn't always kind - but she's always trying to do the right thing. He goes to lunch to Stevie's parents, he saw a problem and knew how to fix it. Stevie wasn't pleased but she was still At Ellingham after it all. Objective complete.
He didn't give her a iPad, he followed her in the snow, he took the fall after finding Ellie's body so Stevie wouldn't get in trouble.
A lot of this changes in Nine Liars, and hoping Maureen doesn't change his characterization in book 6 because I Really Like It.
the fact is,” he said, “i liked you from the first moment I saw you, when you looked like you wanted to punch me in the face for just being alive. that probably says something dark about me.
thoughts on the nine lairs ending…let me be delulu for a sec IT WAS HIS SISTER!!!
ITS ALL A MISUNDERSTANDING!!!!
it never clarified if he was kissing someone or not, just said his face was hidden bc it was pressed into someone else’s…could’ve just been a hug or some type of embrace. he’s drunk duhhhh.
and maureen probably wanted to end this one with a bang. for shock. also in one of the other books (i think it’s hand on the wall) it says that the sister had to COME to help david with the king bust thing…what if she lives in the uk and david didn’t know what to do and called her. or she found him or something.
LET ME BE DELULU PLS
top 5-10 steviedavid headcanons, GO!
HI. i’m so sorry it’s taken me so long to respond, ive just been crazy busy 😭 but anyways..
1. they’re very competitive when it comes to literally anything. especially punch bugs and thumb wars
2. they watch brooklyn 99 together and david makes fun of how larry and captain holt are the same person, and stevie pretends to not find it funny but secretly enjoys the jokes
3. they buy those fake unsolved murder mystery cases (one for each of them), and they try to see who can solve them faster, david loses every single time but refuses to give up and hopes one day he’ll beat her (spoiler, he never does)
4. david talks to becky about stevie, like all the time. he tried to keep it a secret but stevie eventually found out but pretended to not know because she thought it was cute
5. they frequently go on bookstore dates whenever they go to burlington
6. one time david jokingly called stevie stephanie, he soon learned after never to do that ever again
7. they both have taylor swift songs that remind them of each other, but neither of them tell the other which one it is
8. david gives stevie fantasy books to read while she gives him mysteries to read. somehow they both ended up giving each other the book six of crows, and spent an entire hour talking about whether it was more fantasy or more of a crime novel
9. david makes a shit ton of typos in texts and somehow stevie manages to figure out what he’s trying to say. she teases him for it constantly
10. they watch 10 things i hate about you (haha this is number 10 as well i’m so funny) religiously. like so much to the point they can recite it
there you go!! some steviedavid hc’s!! hope you liked them :) don’t be shy to ask for posts like this, i’d love to answer some more!
I genuinely cannot remember if I said this in a comments if some post or to my friend or what. But I’m rewatching Hannibal and. And
I am here to propose something. MAYHAPS Stevie is not the Sherlock of her world. But the will graham.
I mean, she’s definitely watching Hannibal, the the way he figures out crimes (superpowers) remind me Stevie interviewing dead people in the end of vanishing stair.
I don’t know is this anything?
Im actually so freaking late bc I just finished mine liars BUT I’m so upset with David rn. I actually love him sm but I hate him. What is he? Im happy he and Stevie didn’t actually have sex bc if he broke up with her after that and just left ?? I would have been more sad for her. I understand he was overthinking but also kissing someone else? ?.!!./ outta pocket David 🙄
You’re so real for all of this. He is such a problem in this book. I love him but I’d also love to watch him slip on a banana peel into a dumpster or something.
Would it be crazy if I said that if they’d had sex, I don’t think David would have broken up with her? I’m not saying that because David is a horny scumbag who would’ve only stayed with her because they had sex, but I think from David’s POV, Stevie doesn’t love him as much as he loves her. (Whether that’s actually true is debatable, but unlikely imo given her reaction to being dumped.) Think about how Izzy first reacted to Stevie, like she was meeting a celebrity- because David had spent the last 3 months talking her up. In Stevie’s narration, she constantly frets about being perceived as intelligent, capable, and worthy. In David’s eyes, Stevie is all of those things already. I think David sees himself as a fuckup still, albeit one who managed to get his shit together long enough to spend a semester at Cambridge. He doesn’t know where he’s going next. (Neither does Stevie, but as she fails to realize, you get a little leeway when you solve the crime of the century twice.) David cuts off his nose to spite his dad, and even though it still shakes out alright for him, his future is even more uncertain than Stevie’s.
But Stevie isn’t perfect. She breaks down when she realizes she cannot solve the Nine Liars case in time to leave England. She can be utterly single-minded when it comes to solving the case, and the majority of the time, the breakdown in communication between her and David stems from her words/actions/missteps.
David clearly believes he is not worthy of Stevie and I don’t think he would’ve broken up with her unless he believed that she believed it too. Maybe if they had slept together, that aspect of their dynamic could have been a little more resolved– but maybe if she hadn’t been broken up with, Stevie wouldn’t have stayed behind in England in order to actually solve the case, which could’ve driven another wedge in between them. (Also, David snapping at Stevie before breaking up with her and saying “not everything is about you” makes me sooo sad because it’s another misread of what she’s feeling/thinking. I think Stevie felt really, genuinely guilty and upset when she thought she couldn’t solve Rosie & Noel’s OR Angela’s murders. The fact that Angela had disappeared immediately after talking to Stevie probably felt like Ellie all over again. David may have noticed this if he stopped being insecure for 5 minutes and thought about what was actually going on with Stevie. But I DIGRESS because this is getting way too long.)
As for kissing someone else I think his reasoning there was so simple actually: He feels as though he has fucked up all the things in his life worth trying for; Ergo, why not become a fuckup again? Drown your sorrows in tequila and kiss somebody you don’t know! All the kids are doing it!
I did not mean for this to turn into a dissertation on the dynamics of Steviedavid’s Nine Liars arc. I just can’t wait to see where they both go from here, because they are both kind of fucked up in the head, and they know that, and I think that will keep drawing them together as long as they’re in each others proximity. Good thing Stevie is returning home to America, where David won’t be…until, you know, his semester ends and he has to go home ;)
if you ever wanna feel happy again definitely don’t think about how stevie and david both had struggles with mental health and how they both hurt themselves when they were overwhelmed by emotion (stevie by knocking herself out on the bedframe or whatever after she kissed david; david by getting himself LITCHRALLY BEATEN up after he learned about stevie accepting his dad’s offer) and definitely don’t think about how they both have rocky relationships with both of their parents and definitely. DEFINITELY don’t think about how no matter what they do to each other they are inherently tied together through their parents and ultimately can’t escape each other’s orbit, not forever, not in any way that’s permanent or meaningful. just don’t think about the steviedavid parallels. don’t.
