Empirically proven to transform goals into reality
From my failure. A bold commitment. I'm excited.
It’s the 1st day of myStickk commitment to work on my music project 5.5 hours every single day for 2 weeks finishing in a performance of at least one song for a couple people at my house on Wednesday July 20th. I’ll also be showing them a recording of a “Day 1” performance so they get to see the progress. If I fail to practice 5.5hours or fail to have the performance I lose $200. Why am I doing this? I failed last month. I was planning to have a performance a month ago and I didn’t work hard enough to make it happen. It was a bit embarrassing despite all the work I had done so far. I’m doing this to not only accomplish the performance, but to ensure I put in the work necessary for a decent progression.
It’s a pretty tight schedule on days where I work at La Colombe. I start practicing @ 7am, go to work and practice another hour after work then immediately set up to go to bed, but it’s only 2 weeks and I think I can do it.
The Stickk commitment is where I put up money for a cause that I do not like. If I do not reach my goal I have to give the money to the people I don’t like ie. $200 would go to the Trump campaign or something like that. In actuality my money will be going to this thinktank committed to proving global warming does not exist. Argh!?? The point of the Stickk commitment is to use negative reinforcement to make me work harder. I did a Stickk commitment last year commuting to freestyle rapping for 2 hours every day for a month. Despite coming home @ 1am after partying and forcing myself to stand and freestyle half asleep and tipsy to the discovery channel till 3am I got ge job done. To ensure success I’m focusing on building in time for sleep and taking care of all errands on my days off so I’m not interrupted on days when I work at La colombe (barista). We’ll see what challenges await. more details of the project specifics will be listed below. I’ll keep you all updated here. more soon…

Week Nine
This week was good! I am happy about it. Last week's 57.5 was horrible though so I am trying to hold that horrible feeling to motivate myself and to push myself further because I only seem to knuckle down after a bad number which is not good enough. Week Nine Weigh In: 55.9kg (123.05lb) Week Eight Weigh In: 57.5kg (126.6lb) Week Seven Weigh In: 55.8kg (123.02) Week Six Weigh In: 57.1kg (125.6lb) Week Five Weigh In: 56.5kg (124.6lb) Week Four Weigh In: 57.8kg (127.42lb) Week Three Weigh In: 57.3kg (126.3lb) Week Two Weigh In: 57.0kg (125.7lb) Week One Weigh In: 57.4kg (126.5lb) Starting Weight: 57.8kg (127.42lb) Highest Weight: 60.8kg (135lb) Lowest Weight: 50kg (110lb) Ultimate Goal Weight: 50kg (110lb)
Recently, my motivation to exercise has hit an all time low. With summer coming into full bloom (nice pun, AMIRIGHT?), I'd rather be spending my days outside drinking, eating or time wasting (I see you golf). I'm sure there are plenty of others that feel this same way.
A couple of weeks back, good friend of mine, let's call him John (his name is actually John), started a weight loss program by creating a reverse-incentive, sometimes called a negative-incentive. He worked a deal with another friend, we'll call him Andrew (again, also named Andrew), that associated his weight loss with a monetary value. John set a goal, and if that goal wasn't reached (verified weekly), he would write a check to Andrew.
So after recently watching Tim Ferriss's speech at The Next Web conference in Amsterdam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DSq9uGs_z0E) I discovered this site stickk.com. This site allows you to create commitment contracts which bind you into achieving a personal goal.
For this to work, you have four steps to create a commitment: Set your goal, set the stakes, designate a referee, and identify your supporters. You can then track your progress on their website. If you fail to make progress, you lose (straight) cash (homie) to your selected anti-incentive.
I'm going to start use it for my routine exercise. Updates to follow.
Day Seven
Today was an excellent day, especially with the news of my stats but I will post that in a separate post. I was under by 70 calories which is fantastic. I feel good because today was a Sunday and I found that the hardest day last time. I don't know why.
I exercised as normal today, although I walked for longer on the trendmill because my favourite show was on so I stayed. It was a good motivator.
I'm excited.
Tumblr: Update 2013-01-21
This update is long overdue... A. Body weight My weight has been hovering between 84 and 89. When I measured last week, it was 87kg. So, I did lose 2 kgs after all. But I do intend to be much fitter. B. General health In the last few months, I have been swimming a lot and have been running on treadmill occasionally, in addition, I have been reducing my meat intake, my cholesterol still
Making resolutions easy
Today is the day of making resolutions, stating intent for the rest of the year. But sticking to these goals and resisting temptation can be hard: what we know we should do for the well being of our long-term self is not usually what our short-term selves want to do right now (and it is always 'right now'). Read this article I wrote for ING eZonomics about commitment devices to learn how to resist temptation and stick to the well-intentioned resolutions you've made this morning to help make your 2013 a successful year. Having trouble coming up with resolutions in the first place? Dan Goldstein of Decision Science News proposes using avatars to help people imagine their future-selves.
Happy New Year!
