Stoicks way of approaching Valka was very unexpected for me. It was a completely new side of him. Careful, gentle, slightly hopeful and loving.

The Dancing and the Dreaming crushed me. Seeing Stoick start the song: "Do you remember our song Val?" He sings it, you see her struggling to remember, and Stoick is heartbroken. She doesn't remember. But then she does, looking as surprised as Stoick, she sings and it all comes back. She never stopped loving him and he never stopped loving her.

And in the background of all this you have Hiccup discovering this new side of Stoick, the relationship that he never knew much of except for the fact that it turned his father into this angry, vengeful man. And he is happy, so very happy to finally see this gentle, caring personality that he has only glimpsed a few times, and all is right in the world for a moment.

Valka had no interest in Stoick the Vast.  She had ambitions and dreams and a yearn for travel, and he seemed like any other viking--especially one that came with a lot of responsibility baggage. There was no reason for her to allow herself to get involved with him more than necessary.

Except she caught him kiss the bridge of a calf's nose once, and heard him refer to the barn kittens as adorable, and little by little she discovered this ridiculous soft side of him, and it unexpectedly captured her heart.
