well i am not black so i can only speak from the perspective of scholarship but i don’t think its a reach to say that a lot of kory is/can be black-coded (and subsequently whitewashed), but then also she is subject to antiblack stereotypes and misogynoir because of it. like yes she’s an alien, but writing off elements of her hypersexualization by the writers as parts of her alien culture is doing the ideological labor of justifying why a bronze skinned curly haired woman was hypersexualized, which isn’t terribly different from things like the jezebel stereotype that argued that this oversexuality (by european and american standards of course) was inherent to a race. notice how she wears more clothes the straighter her hair is! like i really hate the idiotic kory that exists post animated teen titans but noticed how that perceived naive innocent version of kory is so tied with her whitewashing. theyre all connected.

oh fanon. not even close. dc has always pretty consistently complied with the acceptable standards of racism within contemporary liberal america. they’re beholden to shareholders and, to a much lesser extent, public opinion.

fancreators are anonymous and faceless. their lack of profit incentive also frees fancreators from brand control and sanitation. they can say whatever they want and there is almost never anyone there to tell them they’re being racist, let alone any reason for them to listen because it tends to attract profoundly defensive people.

dc will be racist by making talia a mean villain and someone who babytrapped/stealthed bruce, which is rape (though it must be said this version of events was also walked back by dc and retconned!) and is now an irrational obsessed ex. fanon will be racist by making talia a hysterical childsnatcher or gleeful beater of children who barely speaks english and a rather violent rapist to boot.

Dinah Lance hot takes mayhaps??

i love dinah. *love* dinah. she should be helming a never ending solo. one of the things i love about her is how her character fits into the bigger world. she’s got ties to so many corners of it and she’s connective tissue of the cape community and they should treat her like it (like they sometimes do for dg bit only sometimes)!!! like frankly if wonder woman is the number one standing superheroine for dc i think dinah should be number two THATS MY GIRL.

and lastly dc editorial is deathly afraid of her sexuality her bisexual transgender switch polyamory is too much for them but i know. I KNOW IT. i like that she both uses it for her own gain while also blending it with her genuine desires. its a pretty complex thing but dc doesnt know how to write a female protagonist as an agent of her own sexuality instead of a sex object. i love viewing dinahollie in this context especially.

if you could change one thing about batman comics, what would it be?

oh god. i only get one?

okay. if i only get one it might perhaps be a boring answer. but i would slow down and reassess. batman has suffered in recent years i think from a lack of clear and unified direction in where they want to take the character that frankly i think has been the case since the dickbats era. like i dont think they really know where they want to go with any of the attached characters and the end of continuity in 2011 has like shattered and splintered everything. so we’re seeing this crazy inconsistency and repeating of storylines over and over and over and frankly i think thats weak control over the batoffice.

in other words we need to bring back the batbible. maybe a new batbible without old batbibles issues, but we need a batbible again. say what you will about denny (and i will!) but my god was the editorial control and story direction good under his helm. the 90s is still immensely popular among fans of consistent comics for the reason even if there were many, many flaws with the actual content within.

my real hot take (among many cass hot takes) is cass is probably the most heavily stereotyped batfam member by both canon and fanon by a wide margin these days because while other racialized characters like duke and damian face more overtly negative treatment cass is predominantly east asian and people have a harder time spotting denigrating stereotypes because they rely on invisibility and so they pass under the radar of a lot of people who are otherwise pretty good about addressing racism in the work. like i can’t really imagine fanon cass, like, emoting. she’s just this serenely smiling kind hearted supremely talented soul but never cries or gets angry or overly happy or goofy. ive said before i think people read a lot of her extremely traumatized behavior and attribute it to something innate (cough cough her race) rather than her trauma and well thats racist and fucked upppp

also it wouldnt change too much but she shouldve been the bat of macau instead of the bat of hk because im tired of dc’s hong kong fetish and macau is awesome if they really wanted a SAR with western influence plus thats where cains compound actually was iirc. the black bat of bay gate. think about it.
