AIO to my boyfriend stonewalling me?
Some background: We usually spend 4-5 days a week together, and most the weekend. Our relationship has been the best i have had up until now, we do have a 15 year age gap (25f and 40m) but I haven’t thought anything of it because we both own our houses, established in our careers, etc. he usually goes out of his way to help me and I try to return the favor - he remembers things, does sweet things for me, and has genuinely been a good boyfriend. He has had health issues that could impact his thought abilities before but I have tried to be accommodating of what I tend to notice because it’s not his fault. He does struggle with typing.
He has went out of his way for me, my parents, my friends. He’s been consistent up until about a few weeks ago and has been criticizing things like my driving (see attached screenshot) when I drive us to dinner so he can have a few drinks. When he gets in these moods I have to pry for information but he won’t tell me. Given that we all have bad days, he usually is fine the next day and I let it go.
So, with my bf being out of town, I wanted to celebrate some of my accomplishments at work and I went out with my female friend to a bar he doesn’t like. I did not drink but I enjoyed getting my makeup on and just girl stuff. He has made a comment before about how he hasn’t met this friend but he encouraged me to go out anyways. When I gave him a call, he sent me to voicemail and texted me the above. I knew he was at a bar so I figured he was drinking and was joking.
It has now been 3 full days and I haven’t heard from him which is unlikely because he usually calls me 3-4 times a day like clockwork. I tried calling him twice on Sunday, no answer. I’m debating ending the relationship over this because I don’t think it’s fair and I don’t want to chase him. That being said I’m struggling because things have been great up until now (the last 6 months) and I’m bummed that he’s acting like this when he’s a great person to everyone else. I just don’t know what to do. I am wondering if I’m underreacting or overreacting because I’m considering this the end of our relationship and I haven’t tried to reach out to him further because i figure if he wanted to talk to me he’d call.
Reddit consensus: NOT OVERREACTING (NOR) (98% confidence)
Top comment: “NOR - he is 40 and dating a 25yo... Because no woman his age would put up with this bullshit.
Just block him and forget about his existence. A 40yo writing "bye felicia" should be reason enough to leave.”
Notable explanation: “Any man that loves you wouldn’t speak to you that way. He has a lot of attitude for something seemingly minor, personally I’d dump his ass I don’t let anyone talk to me like that.
6 months into the relationship and now he is showing his true personality (which isn’t a catch) and his nitpicking and shitty behavior will probably get worse over time as he gets more comfortable being a total jackass to you. Honestly this is probably why he’s single at 40.
3 days without speaking to my partner (on their end) and they dont have a solid excuse (camping with no service for example) I’d assume from that point on I am single. If he cared he would have reached out or found a way.
So NOR, let it go. Let the relationship end. You’re young and better off. If he wasn’t so immature and truly cared he would make it work and stop picking unnecessary fights with you so really he is the one overreacting.”
