I hate the discourse that follows mental illnesses and implies that you just need to meditate or workout or think positive thoughts and that you are not doing enough to overcome your mental illnesses.
First of all, let me explain this in context of physical illness. Someone has a viral flu, so you tell them to be hydrated and rest. If they have a cold, you make them soup and put a blanket on them.
But what if someone has an MRSA pneumonia? Will you tell them that they have a flu and are making it up all in their lungs and it’s not a big deal? Will you give them soup and hope that they’ll get better soon?
Everyone gets sad, everyone gets anxious and everyone gets the flu and the common cold. It’s NOT the same as having a mental illness. If you can understand that an MRSA pneumonia is serious and needs treatment, you can understand mental illnesses and their debilitating effects. You choose not to. Instead, you gaslight us and become just another voice in our heads.
Mental illnesses are not something that gets better with meditation and gratefulness and all your eat, pray, love bs. It doesn’t even make a dent.
Secondly, wouldn’t I choose to be healthy if I could? Do you think it’s fun for me to want to off myself? Do you think it’s fun for me when I wake up with dread and anxiety that eventually turns into a panic attack in the middle of the day? Do you think it’s fun for me to take this heaviness and knots in the middle of my chest everywhere? Do you think it’s fun for me to go tel my psychiatrist every single month that the meds aren’t fuckin working?
I’m just so goddamn tired. Just stop being assholes. If you have nothing nice to say, stfu for my sake.
