Body of missing kayaker found as clean-up begins in wake of Storm Frank

The body of a kayaker who went missing as Storm Frank brought downpours and gales that battered Britain has been found. The man, who was in his 50s, was reported to have got into difficulties on the River Findhorn in Moray on Wednesday. Police Scotland confirmed his body was recovered from the river this morning. It is the first death reported from the storm, which left a trail of devastation and renewed flooding misery for thousands in Scotland and the north of England.

This is probably the worst flooding episode that Newton Stewart and much of this region has experienced, for some people, in living memory. On the other side of that, the response has been heroic

Storm Frank led to hundreds of homes being evacuated and thousands more left without power. Drier conditions are forecast for New Year's Eve in most places but dozens of other flood warnings remain in place in Scotland, Wales and England. Snow is also expected on higher ground. Meanwhile, the Met Office has revealed that December was the warmest on record in Britain and the second wettest for more than 100 years. The average for the month across the country was 8C (46F), which is nearly 4C above what it should have been and 1.1C above the previous record in 1934.

On the eve of 2016 and I’m conscious of what a terrible past few days people have had with the most recent storm and its aftermath across the country no more so than here in my own District of Thurles/Templemore and surrounding parishes where I’ve been in homes that have flooded ,trees and poles down ,roads closed ,streets closed ,businesses adversely affected and now this morning to visit…
