Cycat's Steve Harrington Timeline

While writing my latest fic that involved flashbacks to Steve as a kid, I needed a way to know his age/grade. So, I decided to make a timeline of his life that keeps track of his age, schooling, jobs, and, of course, the timing of the Stranger Things seasons.

From the show's wiki, I got an approximate DOB for Steve as well as the other dates of major events in the show. From Netflix, I got the date when Season 5 will take place (not accounting for any time jumps that may occur).

Now, I know looks weird, but my brain sees years in circles. January is at the top of the circle, July is at the bottom, December circles around to January of the next year. I also tend to think in "school years" which is the layout I chose for the timeline. (Grade X starts in September of one year and ends in June of the next.)

Just establishing the timeline here, ignore me.

Season 1 takes place in Fall-Winter 1983, making it the 83-84 school year.

Season 2 takes place in Fall 1984, making it the 84-85 school year.

Season 3 takes place during Summer Break of 1985, making it between the 84-85 and 85-86 school years.

Season 4 takes place in Spring of 1986, making it the 85-86 school year and also Spring Break 1986.

Steve is a grade higher than Nancy, Robin, Jonathan, Barb, Crissy, Jason, and Billy. He graduated in 1985, making his senior year the 84-85 school year. He was a Junior in in 83-84 school year and the rest were Sophomores. Tommy and Carol, along with her friends, are presumably in the same grade as him. Barb is presumably in the same grade as Nancy. Billy is implied to have been a grade below Steve. Given that Chrissy is presumably a senior in the 85-86 school year, she would have also been a Sophomore in Season 1. We can assume that Jason (at the very least) is in her grade as well.

Eddie has repeated Senior year twice, meaning he's in his third Senior year during the 85-86 school year. That means his second Senior year (and first repeat) was in the 84-85 school year, and his first Senior year was in 83-84. So, he was in his first senior year in Season 1. He's a grade higher than Steve and two higher than Chrissy.

Eddie participated in a middle school talent show, which Chrissy also participated in, obviously meaning they both were in middle school at the same time during this talent show. That would put this talent show in the 79-80 school year, when he was in 8th grade and Chrissy (as well as all the others in her grade) was in 6th. Steve would've been in 7th grade.

Assuming that Gareth is a Junior, that would make him a Freshman during the 83-84 school year. That also puts him in 5th grade when Eddie is in 8th. Unnamed and Jeff are likely somewhere between.

This is all also assuming the only one to ever get held back was Eddie, and only just the twice that he was held back as a Senior, nothing more and in no other grades.

The younger kids are all presumed to have been in 7th grade during the 83-84 school year, none of which were ever held back. Erica is likely to have been in 6th grade during the 85-86 school year, putting her in 4th grade in Season 1.

Anyways, it was food for thought. Also helps me remember. This is also the most likely timeline that I can think of. Let me know if i missed/forgot something.

Feel insane trying to work out the American School Year and I KNOW I have had people explain it to me before and I've smiled and nodded like oh yeah that makes sense but omg. Please someone put me out of my misery. I keep getting caught up on Eddie's bullshit speech where he says "I'm gonna walk that stage next month" which would imply April because it's March and they are about to go into the Spring Holidays but the semester doesn't end until June.

Do Seniors graduate earlier than the end of the school year or something? Most resources I can find online state "late May, early June" as periods for graduation ceremonies. Was it an error in the script? Does Eddie not know his months? Even graduating early because of his credits or whatever he would still walk the stage at the same time as the others right?

I am trying to redo my timeline for SFLH and I am suffering. Did you guys know the Australian School Year goes January to December? 😂 Because I had no idea you guys did it another way until like last year although The Simpsons should have probably clued me in.

Just thinking about the timeline right now and how suddenly this shift in him really occurred because a year is a long time but it also really isn’t.

And oh god now I’m thinking about the party - especially Mike because of his caretaking nature - dealing with Will in consecutive years going missing, being possessed, and then not being there in their sights to make sure he’s safe (even if the danger is seemingly gone and wouldn’t be in Lenora, still).

for people (like me) who get easily confused by the stranger things timeline and how old everyone is supposed to be. all of this information was given each season so it's completely canon.

season 1 starts on november 6th, 1983. nancy, robin and jonathan are sophomores and steve is a junior. eddie is starting his first year as senior and the kids are in the 7th grade.

season 2 starts on october 29th, 1984, almost a year after the events of season 1. this makes nancy, robin and jonathan all juniors, steve a senior, and the kids in 8th grade. eddie got held back so he is repeating his senior year again.

season 3 starts june 28th, 1985. eddie got held back again and steve has graduated, but another school year hasn't begun yet.

season 4 starts on march 21st, 1986. now nancy, robin and jonathan are seniors and the kids are freshmen. eddie starts his third year as a senior, which is his second time being held back. this would make him 19/20 years old depending on when his birthday is.

and for anyone confused about how american school years work: most schools begin at the end of august or beginning of september and go until the end of may or mid june. graduations are typically held at the end of may or beginning of june.

From the other side

The scientist looked at the girl speaking softly to her sister of sorts. It had been 3 months since they opened the upside down, 2 months 3 weeks since the 18 year old looking girl came running through the portal. 2 months and 3 weeks of being there for the experiments and catching her up and learning about the upside down trying to find out how she survived.

' Tonight we are getting you out of here. You know that agent I told you about? He said he would help me but once I get you outside of here we have to run okay?' the Raven haired girl nodded and held the others sleeve. She whispered, '... Scared...' the taller woman smiled nodding. ' I know but I'll protect you.' she got up to go back to her lab work.

That night the bigger woman came to the room and brought her out which to the guards wasn't unusual. She walked past them like it was nothing. The pale girl held onto woman's sleeve and followed. Once outside the lab coat was quickly removed and they started running. Guards coming after and shooting at them. The Raven haired girl held a hand out blood coming from her nose and mouth as black smokey like tentacles emerged from the ground almost like a fence.

'Marie!' the once scientist caught her and got her to the car and sped out as fast as she could to the town of Hawkins, Indiana.

I made a little timeline so I could keep up with everything in order, so this includes speculated ages, birthdays, and specific days. Bolded means part of the series, crossed out means completed, and hightlighted mean birthdays. 

if you wanna use this for reference thats totally no problem, but everything I couldn’t find a specific date for is speculated. If you use it like or smthing :^)

What is the fandom consensus on what grade Jonathan is in relative to Nancy and Steve? The canon presents both Jonathan and Nancy as 16 in November 1983, so I assumed they were both sophomores, and Steve, being 17, was a junior. He would have to be, to still be going to high school with Nancy in 1984.

As far as I know, there’s nothing in canon to say what grade Jonathan is in, and I’m not sure what fandom thinks about it. I really don’t know whether to write him as being in the same grade as Nancy or Steve. Please respond with what you think!
