Sophie singing to other people to comfort them. She doesn't necessarily have a good voice, but her human mom did it to comfort her, so she just does it to other people. A few instances stick out, like in Lodestar, after she and Edaline find each other and Edaline's just holding her and crying? I just imagine her singing "You Are My Sunshine" By Johnny Cash. Same thing some point after Unlocked but she sings "What a Wonderful World" By Louis Armstrong but she just breaks down at the end.
oh this is so sweet I love this!! Sophie may canonically have a "bad" singing voice (if we're going with the worth of something being proficiency and not enjoyment) as evidenced earlier in the series, but I think the meaning behind her voice is worth so much more
I mean!! her response to being told to sing was to sing a song Amy had used to annoy her when they were little. that's so cute and bittersweet and ahh!! Your idea of Sophie's human mom singing to them is so precious; I love it so much. She said her human family was very physically affectionate and touchy, so I like to imaging that there would be some tender touch while she sang to them or hummed them to sleep or to comfort them. Like maybe stroking their hair or back rubs or if they were younger they ould be in her lap. All the little moments that would accumulate around music--maybe that's why she liked it so much in the human world. Not just because it helped block out the thoughts, but because music was home.
with your recommendation of "You Are My Sunshine" I'm just imagining all the different human songs she'd share with her friends and family almost unthinkingly. She doesn't know the elven songs, and the people she sings too doesn't know the words to what she's saying (Fitz can get some of them and Keefe can get all of it with his new polyglot abilities).
That Edaline scene you're proposed is ahhh!! That's so heartbreaking in the best possible way. Just the instinct to comfort by filling the space with sound and warmth and memories. Holding each other and trying to make each other feel safe.
I imagine Sophie's voice is a little on the deeper side, and she sings really quiet most of the time, half-stumbling through the words. She'll fill in little gaps with humming and other noises and so she's not full out singing the song, but all the elements are there.
Also her singing after Unlocked...so good. I adore. For some reason I'm visualizing this as her singing to herself, trying to comfort herself and pull herself together with a song but it brings up so many memories of her old life and combined with the current stress she just breaks down, and she stops the song half-way through because her voice stops working.
If someone wanted a hurt/comfort opportunity they could have someone find her before she stops singing and then hold her and ask her to finish the song and have a sweet moment there. Either ship of platonic or family would work.
I like to think she does it subconsciously sometimes, humming a human song under her breath while she works on something. And the people around her get to listen to it and wonder what the words could mean or what's going on in her head.
Sophie and singing has so much potential!! Both as self-soothing and soothing to others. Music was such a huge part of her life in the lost cities; I want to see it shine through in her new life in those little ways.
