Jesse sighed as he kicked off his boots at the door, quietly shutting it behind him. He wanted to surprise you by coming home a couple days early from his mission. He hadn’t told you he was coming yet. He made his way through your shared home, a boquet of your favourite flowers in his arms as well as a box of your favourite chocolate and some wine. “Y/N!” He called as he walked into your bedroom. “I’m Ho-,” He paused as you looked up, your eyes puffy and red from crying. “Whoa there darlin’!” He set the stuff down on the dresser, making his way to you. “What’s with the tears?” 

“Jesse.” You sniffled, wiping your eyes. “No, I wasn’t crying I was just..” you trailed off as he embraced you, his scent enveloping you. “I missed you.” 

“I know darlin’. I’m real sorry I was gone for so long. I didn’t mean to leave ya here by yourself for so many months.” He stroked the hair from your face and planted a gentle kiss to your forehead. “Can ya forgive me?”

You laughed a little, nodding. “Only if you promise to give me three months of cuddles tonight.” 

Jesse grinned, kissing you gently. “Cross my heart and hope to die.” He promised. “But first, we have dinner reservations in an hour and a half for that new place you were tellin’ me about earlier. The one in Numbani. Then I thought maybe after that we could go for a little midnight fly just outside of Numbani? I know you like to look at the stars.”

You smiled and wrapped your arms around him. “That sounds really nice. Thank you, Jesse.”

Hi Auntie Asy! I've decided I wanted to be a therapist when I'm older (i still have awhile tho jskgsd) and I was wondering if you could give me any tips?

Yes. Go to a university that has a really good placement program, and helps you find supportive agencies who will nurture you and support you through your placement hours.

When you interview for positions, asked agencies how they manage self-care. Do they have professional debriefers? Will you be one of the debriefers on duty? How will they support you through second-hand/vicarious trauma? 

Self-care and employer support is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING you can have as a therapist. You need to be able to manage your own work-load. You need to have a good period of time between client appointments to relax, unwind, and regain energy for the next client. Make sure you’re going into an agency to knows this and cares about it or you’ll burn out super quick. 

LEARN HOW TO SAY NO. Clients will always want ‘more’ of you. More time. Faster, sooner appointments. Agencies will ‘just this once’ ask you to pick up more clients all the time. Say no. For the love of god, just say no! Learning how to say ‘no’ to requests will be the single healthiest thing you will do as a therapist. Yes, you’re going to make that client wait an extra two weeks. But guess what? You can’t help that client if you’re so tired and burnt out from being overworked that you don’t give a fuck about them. 

Compassion fatigue is real. You may have 8 hours in the day, but if you spend all of those 8 hours with clients, you’re going to stop giving a fuck about them. People only have a certain amount of emotional energy to care about others. I typically do 3-4 appointments a day, because any more than that, on the last appointment I really wish I wasn’t there. Just because you have 8 hours, doesn’t mean you need to fill every second up with clients just because that time exists. You NEED self-care and relaxation time. You need time to unwind from seeing clients. Leaving gaps between appointments to quietly write your case notes and relax is essential to your mental health and your continuing work as a therapists. 

If you’re lying in bed at night thinking.worrying about your clients, you need a better debriefing routine. Work should stay at work. If work isn’t staying at work, you need to get in the habit of ‘debriefing’ at the end of the day. At my work, we all walk to the car park together and grumble/chat about our day. This gives us the opportunity to complain about someone if we need to, or seek some casual support if we need to. Get into a routine where you either support your peers to debrief, or have a formal debriefing sessions at the end of every day. It makes it easier to forget about your clients when you’re home. 

Learn when you need to ask for help. If a case is stressing you out. If you’re worry about whether or not the therapy you’re providing for someone is effective, it’s okay to ask managers/peers/colleagues for help. In fact, it’s best you do. Get into the habit of having little staff meetings where you discuss difficult cases and all help each other. 

Get a mentor. Find someone who’s been in the business for 20 years and let them help guide you into a comfortable position in your career. You can ask them questions about how to deal with x client. 

Get therapy yourself. Therapists need therapy too. Self-care is important. Get your own therapist :)
