Black Mirror Season 6 Review
Black Mirror is a show that has such high concepts usually set in the world of technology or the supernatural in some regard. Season 6 was no different and featured 5 episodes of varying themes and length. Let's take a look at them one by one.
Joan is Awful- This one was a fun, easy concept about privacy and the new age of content. Joan finds her own life streaming one night, and her life begins to unravel. Starring Annie Murphy, Salma Hayek, Ben Barnes and Michael Cera this episode pokes fun at terms and conditions, whether or not we ever truly have privacy in today's age and the possibility of what AI may be able to create in the next few years. Score 8.5/10
Loch Henry - Set in the Scottish countryside, Davis and his girlfriend Pia are setting off to film a documentary. Their plans change when they learn of a shocking local secret. This is my favorite episode of the season by far. It shows the intricacies of making film as the entire process is on display. It also shows just how personal some things can be, and sometimes dredging up old secrets is not a good idea. The second half is filled with so much tension, and it truly elevated the big shocking twist. Score 9.5/10
Beyond The Sea- Set in an alternative 1969, two men are on a space mission into deep space. A new technology allows them to be on the space station and, through a robotic body replica, still spend time on earth with their loved ones. Aaron Paul is the stand-out here along with Kate Mara as they get the bulk of the screen time. The themes presented here are about loneliness, love, and grief. The second half is very heavy, but it never quite reaches the level one was hoping for. Score 7/10
Mazey Day- A group of Paparazzi chase celebrities for scandalous stories. Bo wants out but a massive payday lures her back in when a young starlet just disappears from a movie set without any explanation. This one was the simplest approach with the coolest looking twist. It was also the shortest and straight to the point episode of the season. It didn't pull any punches and continues the theme of the season which focuses on privacy and secrets. Score 8/10
Demon 79- Nia works in a department store and finds her life mundane. One day, when taking her break in the lunch room, she accidentally creates a blood pact with an ancient demon. The task is to kill three people or bring about the apocalypse in three days. This episode was good, even if it was a bit all over the place. It dealt with facing the question of sacrifice for the greater good. It dealt with themes of good vs. evil and choosing what kind of person you want to be in this life. It was thoroughly entertaining, and as the tension mounts, you truly begin to understand the weight of the struggle. Score 8/10
