Hi. We made a thing!

"When the fullness of time was come," I ventured to come up with an idea for this year's SQACC fic, and I wanted to talk about it, so of course I hit up my buddy strega, and somehow I not only talked her into writing a one-shot, but also broached the topic of the two of us writing "complementary fics" that were either about the same idea and one followed the other, or what if....

.... and then we came up with the most difficult idea ever, because we are effing masochists, and we wrote the same sequence of events on Christmas Eve, in two separate fics, one from Regina's POV, and the other from Emma's POV.

When I mentioned this in passing to Endo, he said he wanted to do "complementary cover art" too, and so here we are, with four SQACC entries between the three of us.

Strega's fic is "A Time For Us" and it is written from Regina's point of view. Endo's art is amazing, isn't it?

My fic is "A Time For Family" and it is the same night (xmas eve) from Emma's point of view.

And of course, the art for this is just as festive and perfect.

Anyway, this was super hard, and frustrating at times, but we got it done, and we hope you like it. I feel so fortunate to have the friends I have in #swen, and this has been something I'll never forget.

Let’s hear what you have to say about Gideon the Ninth/Harrow the Ninth/The Locked Tomb series... since I have recently read both. 😁

Hahahaha, I’ll try not to do spoilers because to all mutuals reading this out of boredom that might have not read the series -well, duology at this point- I’m fully recommending it to them. Especially if you love worldbuilding as much as I do.

Now, onto the opinion :P I fucking love it. Plain and simple. I stumbled upon Gideon’s book one day while looking at the books that had f/f relationships and the blurb made me pause and basically get it without thinking twice. Yet, it wasn’t the relationship itself what brought me in (more on that a few lines below) but the world. 

UGH, THE WORLD!

The world is amazing, from the sci-fi perspective to the way death is discussed upon to the relationship between the characters and how the universe works for them. Each character has a very distinctive voice that you can practically listen to when reading and I do enjoy the witty of it all. How is said, again and again, how horrific and yet hauntingly beautiful it all is. When we first read Gideon we have things from her perspective and I think it was a genius move to show us someone that responds to that classic character archetype of warrior that is tired of basically everything (made me think of Mad Max and Furiosa at some points) and yet not everything is colored by the darkness of it all. The starting plot was great as well. Usually, whenever encountering a book with a political angle I always fear the author would try to emulate Game of Thrones which, in my opinion is not nearly as good as media made it out to be -don’t kill me- and therefore there are a lot of subplots and characters that do not appeal nor call to me and I tend to consider them superfluous. For this series, however, I think the usage of politics and, at the end of it all, anthropology to some extent, is made in a way that it makes you root for the character, know what will happen next if only to see how bad their ruse can originally go towards XD

Now, Harrow, as a character. I love her xD She is a brat, but what a delightful brat she is lol. If anyone here has read or has a particular kinship to Yennefer from the Witcher series I think you will see some correlations between both characters in the sense of the lengths they are capable to go in order to protect things that are important to them. (Even a young version of Regina can be found if you squint a little heh). At first there’s this.... hunger for knowing more that is given to the reader that culminates perfectly into everything that happens at the end of book 1. And then, you have MORE in book 2 in where we get her stripped away from what she knew in a way and yet the world keeps on expanding.

To be honest, since I read Gideon way before Harrow was out I was worried that the second part would bore me or that the standards would not be met. But boi, I was wrong lol. There’s a lot of good things to say when you basically write a story about necromantic queer people in space and the queer aspect is just another thing that the reader can focus AND FUCKING LOVE on when everything seems to be happening at once. I loved the immersion, the way there’s not an ounce of infodumping during the whole story even if there are moments in where it seems that one could get lost with all the information given to us. At points it made me think of yet another author I love -China Mieville- who in Embassytown for example created a very rich scifi world based solely on another aspect that can give us pages upon pages of self-reflection that is linguistics and the concept of what Lie means for one’s culture (Really, read him)

The angst that peppers the story -not giving any spoilers but you, love, know what I mean lol- is just *chef kiss* as well as the hurt comfort that it coexists with something as brutal as the story. 

And fuck, they are useless at some times but, what is there to not love about them all? :P

Hi there! Not sure whose post you replied to, if it was my post of it or someone’s reblog, but “whump” is a fandom term for fictional characters being imperiled, injured, tortured, tied up, etc, etc. And whumpers are folks who enjoy seeing that kind of stuff. I’m the originator of the post you replied to - and I’m a whumper.

I was playing a Ask Box game today where people would send me a character/actor name and I’d share my favorite whump scenes of theirs.

So the fact that the scene in question was “literally torture” and “nearly killed her” is actually part of the appeal for me! I know you might find that unusual, but there’s a lot of other folks out there like me who enjoy the same things :) We’re all super nice folks, just with unusual tastes and preferences.
