Meet Neil, my Peace Lily
Besides Elvis, I worry about Neil loads, too. Mostly because.... Marks & Spencer’s sells their plants in decorative planters.
I didn’t actually name him. Someone special to me did. For whatever reason, he thought this plant looked like a Neil. So, we decided on that.
Maybe I’m the minority, but I don’t like decorative planters because (1) they’re really expensive (2) I love the classic terracotta pots that are clay-based and will soak up water and (3) decorative pots never have drainage holes.
Because Neil is huge, I can’t just dump him upside down after every watering so the excess water comes out.
I have to be more attentive. I prefer to underwater than overwater Neil since Peace Lilies have fragile root systems and can easily become susceptible to root rot.
I read a lot of conflicting ideas on Peace Lilies. Some said that they need to stay moist but not dry. Others say to dry them out between waterings.
The latter is true for Neil. I will water conservatively and then every few days check his soil to see if he’s moist or dry. And then water appropriately.
I don’t water him until his leaves droop like he’s tired. That’s the sign he is thirsty.
But actually what I have decided to do is to perhaps re-pot Neil into a terracotta pot with a drainage hole during my summer break, and place him in a saucer because...
I am going to follow a bottom-watering approach from now on and see how that goes.
I’ve only been doing that for my succulents because you can tell when non-succulents need water by their leaves... but actually, it might be a nice experiment to see if this way is better. Harli G on YouTube was the one who sold me on the idea.
And it is a lot easier to do this than to constantly walk around with my little watering can guesstimating the correct amount of water for my larger plants... when I can just put them in a bucket with some water and check later to see if their top soil is moist.
Not to mention it is less messy to do it this way.
It also can be beneficial regarding root health and to check that nothing funny is going on there. And it can also reduce topical mould or fungus that — FOR WHATEVER REASON — like to show up in plants in ceramic pots.
I’m going to see how this works and let you all know.
