Stripling Warrior
4/5 STARS
Summary: This collection of comics (3 issues and an Annual) has the worlds first ever Gay Mormon Superhero! In fact, it has a lot of different Queer and Mormon (or Mormon-adjacent) characters, all fighting against injustice.
The main character, Sam Shepherd, gets visited by an Angel soon after marrying his husband Jase. The Angel (Abish from the Book of Mormon) calls him to be The Hand of God and punish sinners. He fights homophobes, misguided missionaries, and Cain himself, alongside his companion, Fe, who also received powers from Abish.
Read at your own risk: This book is has a complex approach to mormonism, as well as deceptions of queer sex (Not explicit but pretty nsfw). I think it's a lot of fun, and is an honest portrayal of queer mormon experiences, with fun fantastical versions of Mormon beliefs (Like a Holy Ghost Force Field).
Overall, I enjoyed it! I've been dying for a Mormon Superhero, and queer mormon superheroes are even better. I would love to see more stories with Sam, Fe, Jase, Shonda, and Riley in the future.

Smash Pages Q&A: Brian Anderson on ‘Stripling Warrior’
When Brian Anderson and James Neish set out to kickstart one issue of their comic Stripling Warrior a few years, they had no idea that not only would it be a success, but that it would strike a nerve. Some of the press and the attention has been about the very idea of a gay Mormon superhero, but Anderson uses Mormon theology and stories similarly to how Catholic teachings have become so familiar to many of us through pop culture.
The series, which has now been collected into a trade collection, is about Sam Shepard and Fe Fernandez, two queer ex-Mormons who are charged by an angel to be the Hand of God on Earth. It sounds heavily religious, but no more so than many other comics that draw from different religious traditions, but it’s a book that also embraces superhero conventions. At its heart, the book is about two conversations. One is between Sam and Fe about how they never stopped believing, the church’s hatred towards them has meant that they refuse to accept this mission as face value, even as they seek to carry out their quest. The other conversation is between their spouses, Jase and Shonda, about identity and how their sexuality is vital to who they have become, but it does not define them because they are so much more than that.
Stripling Warrior is a book unlike anything else on the stands, and I spoke with Brian Anderson about the project, making a sex positive, inclusive story, and what he’s working on now.

Stripling Warrior
What it is: A comic book following a Gay and Lesbian LDS superhero duo
Highlights: Did you read the above section?
Pitfalls: Each of the three issues is incredibly short and the writing sometimes suffers because of it due to how quickly everything has to happen. Also, there are a few NSFW scenes.
Importance: There’s little representation for QUILTBAG+ individuals as is, but it’s zero when it comes to being queer AND Mormon. This might be the only representation we get for a good, long while.
