PRAGMATICS
Part two of the linguistic exam prep. First part here
Pragmatics: study of meaning in context/ speaker- meaning
Deictic: contextually bound elements in a sentence
Deixis: Greek word meaning “pointing” via language
Spatial deixis: here, there, beside you near that, etc •Here/there •Demonstrative pronouns/articles: this/these VS that/those •Verbs of motion: come/go, bring/take Temporal deixis: now, then, last week, later, tomorrow, etc
Person deixis: me, you, him, her, us, them, that woman, etc
Social diexis: Social deixis is reference to the social characteristics of, or distinctions between, the participants or referents in a speech event. The distinction, found in many Indo-European languages, between familiar and polite second person pronouns is an expression of social deixis .
4 maxims (general principals)
Maxim of quality: Do not lie, do not make claims you cannot support.
Maxim of quantity: Make your contribution as informative as required for the purpose of the exchange(not more or less, than as required).
Maxim of relevance: Make your contribution relevant.
Maxim of manner: Be clear, brief and orderly.
Of all parts of wisdom, practice is the best.
