Targaryens and Starks are cousins?
I was viewing House Blackwood and figured that two ladies of thar house (Betha and Melantha) are very likely to be sisters, with that possibility I made a family tree.
a/n: for Melantha and Starks prior to Brandon (son of Rickard) the years of births are according to my proximity.
First, we have Willam Stark, whose first wife was Lyanne Glover, who died in childbirth. Their son, Brandon survived, but died at the age of three from summer chill.
Brandon remarried to Melantha Blackwood and had a son and daughter. By this, Edwyle and Jocelyn are first cousins to Duncan, Jaehaerys, Shaera, Daeron and Rhae, as well as first cousins to Betha and Melantha's nephews and nieces of their brothers.
Jaehaerys and Shaera are parents to Aerys II and Rhaelle. Rhae married Ormund Baratheon and had Steffon. Jocelyn married a member of House Royce, resulting in an issue. Edwyle married Marna Locke and had Rickard Stark. This would make Aerys and Rhaelle first cousins to Steffon and all three of them are second cousins to Rickard.
Aerys and Rhaelle had many children, Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys the only ones who survived childhood. Steffon married Cassana and had Robert, Stannis and Renly who are all second cousins to Aerys and Rhaelle's children. Rickard married his cousin Lyarra Stark, making them parents to Brandon, Eddard, Lyanna and Benjen. This makes the Targaryens and Baratheons third cousins to the Starks.
So, when Rhaegar takes Lyanna, he takes his third cousin (or she runs off with him, better say). The same Lyanna who is third cousin also to Rhaegar's second cousin, Robert. That would mean that Rickard and Brandon were murdered on the order of their second cousin and third cousin once removed.
And then we have this complicated family tree that shows how actually everyone are closer in then what it seems.
The things just get more complicated after Robert's rebellion, I think I might also make another family tree that shows how are the recent/current events in the books.
