STYRIA (2014) dir. Mauricio Chernovetzky & Mark Devendorf In 1989, Lara Hill accompanies her art historian father to an abandoned castle across the Iron Curtain. From a car crash outside of the castle, emerges the beautiful and mysterious Carmilla. Lara smuggles Carmilla into the castle and the two are drawn into an intoxicating relationship, but when Carmilla mysteriously disappears, and women of the town begin committing suicide, Lara’s mental wounds erupt into a living nightmare that consumes the entire town of Styria. The castle is on the very edge of a terrible precipice. A stone falling from the window would fall a thousand feet without touching anything! As far as the eye can reach is a sea of green tree tops, with occasionally a deep rift where there is a chasm.
