okay genuinely need to complain about some shit. As a south asian girl who is NOT pale, I'm sick of trying to find faceless pics of reader for fics and theyre ALWAYS white girls. I have to actually search up "BLACK faceless girls" , because even if i type brown they give me BRUNETTE white girls. This applies to body types. Why are all of them skinny? Petite? Like are you kidding me rn???? No hate to white girls because they aint responsible, but this is your reminder that racism still exists in these subtle ways, and the stereotypical "perfect body" is STILL presented in these ways.

I'm rewatching some of my favorite non-English shows on Netflix but dubbed in English this time. I was curious and not in the headspace to both read and watch at the same time. They use the racist "Asian accent" for the Asian shows, no matter where it's from. It is bad enough that they don't use the words in the subtitles but this is worse. They could have used American or British or any other English speaking nation's accent by getting voice actors from them but nope. I looked up the voice actors and suprise, they're Asian Americans born in America. So they had them put on the "Asian accent" which is part of why it sounds so bad. Why couldn't they be allowed to speak as they do? It wouldn't be as bad. You could hear how fake the accent is too. I hated it so much that I switched back to the original audio.

Netflix not only sucks for accessibility issues but also their racism. I can't speak for other non-English media they have but as an Asian who lives in Asia, this was very obviously playing into racist stereotypes.

I dunno about y'all, but in the last couple years I've been taught about the concept of Window/Door storytelling in my English classes. The idea goes hand in hand with the philosophy of letting everyone tell their story, and that not every story has to be directly relatable to you. Window means that you look in on someone else's story, and Door means that you step into their story.

Window storytelling lets a marginalized group share their experiences with the unmarginalized. You view it through a window, and get a glimpse into a different kind of life. If every story was altered to be relatable to the majority(like it has been for a while) then the marginalized groups would never get to tell their stories.

Important thing? Window stories, viewing a life through a window, DOES NOT MAKE A STORY BORING. It does not take away from the importance of you viewing that story.

Say what you want about Turning Red, but I am sick of people complaining about relatability.

Hi, white teenager here, I cannot relate to Mei feeling pressure to always do well. My parents let me get B’s and I never felt bad about it. Do I enjoy Turning Red? Yeah, its awesome, the animation is great and I love the story.

(If you didn’t like Turning Red because of some other reason, I don’t mind, but please don’t talk about relatability like it defines the quality of a movie)
