This is my face after doing this tabata. Mindset adjustment: to game the system, or not to game the system? . Context: low risk, high reward — here, an airdyne Tabata. . (A Tabata = 8 rounds of: :20 seconds sprint/work @ 100% :10 seconds active rest/rest. Four, daunting, minutes.) . The airdyne is a death machine, but the risk of injury is essentially nonexistent. So - low risk, but high reward if done with the violent intent that is both implied and expected in a Tabata. . There is, however a choice: perform all 8 rounds as intended, or — game the system. 1. As intended: Sprint the entire :20 seconds of each interval, by spinning up the wheels on second 8 of “rest” so as to be, actually, sprinting when second 1 of 20 arrives; then, working through to the bitter end of the 20 second mark. 2. Or, game it: Effort ends at second 18/19 of the sprint (shaving off a solid 1 or 2 seconds of real work); sprint effort begins at second 1 or 2 of the 20 seconds (shaving off a solid 1 or 2 seconds of real work). Total work savings: 1 to 4 seconds, every interval, for 8 intervals, in a conditioning piece that is only 4 minutes long. You do the math. . Unless someone has eyes on your display, no one will know what you choose to do. . But *you* will. And if you ever find yourself in deep water, the water will. . Discomfort avoidance is not a progress strategy. .
