I had gone to bed early, and woke to read that Sudan has passed away. ‪The sun has set on Sudan’s life, but his legacy will live on as we continue to fight extinction. अनंत की ओर

सूडान, अंतिम उतरी सफेद नर गेंडा जोकि कल 19/02/2018 को कीनिया में मर गया।

यह इसकी प्रजाति का अंतिम सफेद नर गेंडा था। सारी दुनिया में जो भी पशु प्रेमी हैं इस ख़बर पर अपना दुख व्यक्त कर रहें हैं।

लेकिन मैं कहना चाहूँगा कि कोई भी जीव, प्राणी, या पशु हमें हर किसी के प्रति दुख, साहनुभूति व्यक्त करने की आदत है। यह हम में है कि हम दूसरों का दुख समझ सकते है, महसूस कर सकते है।

हमारे लिए बात यहीं पर खत्म हो जाती है, लेकिन क्या कोई इससे अधिक भी इन प्राणियों के लिये करता है, नहीं।

तो बहुत से ऐसे सभ्य व्यक्तितत्व वाले लोग भी है जो इन विषयों व उनके भीतरी जीवन में चल रही कठिनाइयों के प्रति संघर्ष करते हैं। यह मान्यता यहीं पर नहीं रुक जानी चाहिए, जब प्रकृति हमारे साथ भेदभाव नहीं करती तो हम प्रकृति के साथ भेदभाव क्यों करें।

प्रत्येक मानव को चाहिए कि उसे जो कुछ भी प्रकृति से मिला है उसे दोबारा प्रकृति को लौटाये, जिससे कि जीवन का संचार बना रहे।

"कोई न चाहेगा कि जीवन के उस छोर पर पहुंचकर वह पाए कि उसने इस जीवन को यूँ ही व्यर्थ गवां दिया।

तो सभी जगतवासी अपना उत्तम दे उस पशु की भांति जिसका सारा जीवन अपने मालिक के प्रति कर्तव्यनिष्ठ रहा।"

Photos by @amivitale. There are only two northern white rhinos on the planet at @OlPejeta Conservancy in northern Kenya. They are on the edge of extinction but in a hopeful turn, scientists from the @biorescue_project have created four more northern white rhino embryos, making a total of NINE northern white rhino embryos awaiting implantation after a successful ovum pick-up procedure last month. These join the five viable embryos from earlier procedures. This was the most successful series of procedures – from oocyte collection in Kenya to in vitro fertilization and cryopreservation in Italy – the team of Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (@leibnizizw), @SafariParkDvurKralove @KenyaWildlifeService @OlPejetaConservancy and #Avantea has ever conducted. Additionally, the team confirmed the successful sterilization of the southern white rhino bull Owuan, which was conducted in December 2020. As a sterilized bull, his behavior will indicate the reproductive cycle of potential surrogate mothers without any risk of impregnating them. The bull will now be introduced to the Ol Pejeta southern white rhino females that have been identified as potential surrogate mothers for future northern white rhino offspring so that the embryos can be transferred at the correct time. The critical next steps in saving the northern white rhino from certain extinction are underway and hope for recovery grows greater daily. Happy Earth Day! Photo by @amivitale. Three years have now passed. Our hearts are still broken. In this photo, Zachariah Mutai (@zacharia443) comforts Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino moments before he passed away. He had lived a long, good life and in his death was surrounded by love, together with the people who committed their lives to protecting and caring for him. One of my most profound memories of this day is how silent it was. All I could hear was the gentle rain, quiet muffled sobs of the keepers and one little grey go-away-bird (Crinifer concolor), chirping ‘go away, go away, go away.’ Witnessing the last of anything die is something I never want to experience again. It was my hope that this moment become a catalyst and wake-up call for humanity. Saving nature is really about saving ourselves. Thanks to a bold plan orchestrated by the @biorescue_project, there are five northern white rhino embryos made from oocytes (immature egg cells) harvested from Fatu and genetic material from deceased northern white rhino males. They are currently being held in liquid nitrogen to be transferred into a surrogate southern white rhino mother in the near future.
