Hi,
I was thinking about our conversation yesterday and I have to admit something to you. I think you’re incredibly beautiful and smart and funny, and if you’d like, I’d really like to take you out on a date. Please don’t feel any pressure, I completely understand if you just want to stay friends.
Junmyeon
The warmth from the museum is a welcome reprieve from the bitingly cold night air. As you step inside, you cast a look at the man accompanying you. He looks different in clothes other than his business professional office-wear, but that doesn’t make him any less handsome, dressed in a cozy sweater and dark trousers. Endearingly, he’s also wearing glasses that you didn’t know he needed, tortoiseshell frames that sit prettily on the bridge of his nose.
He catches you staring, and as if knowing exactly why, he pushes them up. “I forgot to put in my night contacts last night,” he says sheepishly.
“No, I like them!” you say. A little too enthusiastically. Your face burns as you try to recover, but he just grins and looks away, giving you the grace to drop the subject.
You pick up a guide and flip through the pages, skimming through the special exhibitions in search of a worthy starting place. Junmyeon reads along over your shoulder, and the close proximity to him sends a thrill down your spine. “How about here?” you ask, pointing at one of the exhibits.
Junmyeon nods approvingly. “Sounds perfect.”
The sounds of your footsteps as you move through the halls echo just slightly above the quiet chatter of the other patrons. Junmyeon clears his throat softly. “Is this okay? I know it’s not a traditional Valentine’s date like we talked about.”
You laugh, remembering your previous conversation. You had lamented to Junmyeon offhandedly that you had never actually experienced a Valentine’s date. You’d always been single during the holiday, and the thought of going on a bad one when it was supposed to be all about experiencing love… yeah, no thanks. But with Junmyeon, the man who always saved you a seat on the bus ride home from work, even after your first meeting when there had been no other seats available… you’d be willing to try.
“I much rather prefer this,” you say. “It feels like there’s less pressure and I can actually enjoy myself rather than just think about how much it feels like a capital-d Date.”
You arrive at the exhibit you chose and the two of you stroll over together toward the closest painting on the wall. “You know, the majority of these were painted while he had cataracts?” Junmyeon says quietly. “It’s incredible.”
He lets a few more facts slip as the two of you go through the exhibit, ever so often, always in a low, quiet tone. You notice how his eyes sparkle when you get to a piece that he knows something about, admiring the art with a careful eye.
“Will you tell me about this one?” you ask as you approach another, seeing that look appear in his eyes once again.
His eyes widen ever so slightly. “Are you sure? It’s not too overbearing?”
“It’s interesting,” you reply. “I like hearing it from you.”
Grinning, Junmyeon launches into a passionate script about the art in front of you, his gestures growing more animated with each passing word. He even draws the attention of a few other passersby, including a museum guide who nods in approval. You are interested in what he has to say, but with each second you find yourself slipping further and further under some kind of spell, your eyes drifting from his twinkling eyes down to the curve of his lips. He’s just so… pretty, you think.
“So yeah,” he says, quieter now. “That’s how this piece ended up inspiring a bunch of modern artists.”
“Fascinating,” you breathe.
“Really?”
You nod, trying to will the tips of your ears to stop burning. “Really.”
“Are you hungry?” Junmyeon asks. You’re now in the cafe attached to the museum, standing in line for the check out counter. Your feet and your cheeks both have a slight soreness to them— your feet, because of the endless amounts of walking that you’ve done, and your cheeks, from the endless amounts of grinning. You found yourself unable to control your smiles throughout the night, charmed as Junmyeon had grown bolder and bolder, talking about the artwork in increasingly more detail.
“Not that hungry, but I’d like to stop for a minute here to take a rest.” You scan the menu, frowning when you don’t find anything you particularly like, then the counter itself. “Oh!” Your eyes light up when you finally see the ‘specials’ sign. “I’m about to suggest something crazy.”
“Okay, shoot,” Junmyeon replies, raising an eyebrow.
You point at the sign. “Gelato?”
“Gelato in this weather,” Junmyeon sighs, but smiles when he sees your pleading eyes. “Not crazy at all,” he amends quickly.
The two of you sit side by side in the cafe booth, eating your gelato. You dip your spoon into his to taste his flavor and he does the same to you.
“How did you get to know so much about art?” you ask.
“Oh, I got really into it in college. When I was studying and I needed a break, I would just click through random articles online to learn about something else completely unrelated to my classes. I ended up looking through some artists’ histories and I got obsessed.”
“Wow,” you say, deadpan. “You took a break from studying with studying. You’re just full of surprises.”
“In what other ways have I surprised you?” He tilts his head, looking at you with an adorable, inquisitive look.
“Well for starters…” You reach out and tap the corner of his glasses lightly. “These were a surprise.”
“So I have bad eyesight. Is that a crime?”
“Of course not,” you laugh. “But what would be a crime is if you didn’t wear them for our second date.”
Junmyeon sputters, choking a bit on his spoon. His face turns the same shade as his strawberry sorbet. “You want a second date?”
“Mhm.” You reach over and take another spoonful out of his bowl. “Don’t you?”
“Well… yes,” he blinks. He looks at you quietly for a second, contemplative, before he starts laughing.
“I’m not the only one full of surprises, it seems.”
Baekhyun had known your members for years and through you got to hear more about them and he decided Nayeon would be the best person for his scheme. Jihyo, Jeongyeon and Sana would likely tell you right away. Mina, Tyuzu and Momo might not know how to discreetly ask you if they didn't know the answer. Chayoung and Dahyun were wild cards and so that left Nayeon as the safest option but how to approach her?
Baekhyun figured some award show after-party would be his best bet. There would be tons of people and he could surely get Nayeon alone...easier said than done when she had so many members. Whenever she went to the bar or the toilet someone went with her and Baekhyun thought he might not have a chance to talk to her...when Tzuyu who was guarding the table with Nayeon walked away leaving her alone. Baekhyun made a quick excuse to Lay about the bathroom and appeared beside her.
"Hi!" he said sitting down next to her and Nayeon jumped "hi". "So we might not have much time so I'll just come out with it. Please don't tell Y/n but Suho is really enjoying being back with her and we've all been wondering if it will develop into more". Nayeon nodded "we've been thinking the exact same!". Baekhyun nodded "have you asked Y/n? What did she say?". Nayeon paused, unsure if you just tell Baekhyun and he smiled at her "I'm only asking because Suho wants it to be more but he's scared to ask Y/n in case she doesn't want to be and it ruins their relationship". He hoped telling Nayeon this would be a show of good faith and it worked. Nayeon looked down "we have asked Y/n but ages ago and she said they didn't work out dating last time so why would it work out this time?". Baekhyun was shocked and upset on behalf of Suho but Nayeon continued "however the girls pointed out that was ages ago when they were different people. Plus they never had this amazing chemistry and passion, so we told her it might be different now". "What did she say?" Baekhyun asked and Nayeon sighed "not much but she didn't disagree with our points...but like I said that was a few months ago so there's a chance she's changed her mind". "Do you think you could ask her?" Baekhyun asked "if you tell me that she has changed her mind then I can encourage Suho to ask her out! I just need to know Y/n won't break his heart". "Y/n would never be mean" Nayeon argued and Baekhyun nodded "I know but he's really fallen for her so if he worked up the courage to ask her and she said no it'd be hard for him. If she says no I won't tell him but we'll stop suggesting it to him and setting him up to fail". Nayeon nodded "okay, I'll speak to Y/n and text you?". "Yes, here's my number!" Baekhyun said handing her a slip of paper he'd already prepared. Nayeon nodded "okay I'll let you know as soon as I know" and with a wave she walked away.
Baekhyun didn't hear back for a whole week and the suspense was killing him. He'd drafted a message asking Nayeon if she'd asked you yet like 10 times before he stopped not wanting to be pushy.
Nayeon was well aware Baekhyun was waiting for a reply but honestly there hadn't been any good time! You'd all been really busy with schedules and Nayeon hadn't got to be alone with you in ages. She knew if she just blurted it out to you, you’d immediately know something was up so she had to bide her time. Then one evening you were staying in and your roommate Jihyo was heading out. So Nayeon appeared at your door with a big smile.
"What's going on?" you asked, clearly suspicious and Nayeon did her best to play it cool. "Nothing just we've hardly spoken all week and I missed you, fancy a catch-up?". "Of course!" you said welcoming her in and Nayeon flopped onto your bed with you. "Okay so what's new? How's your dating doing?". Nayeon quickly got roped into telling you the date she'd been on a few days ago and half an hour later she realised she'd gotten sidetracked. "Now enough about me, how are you? How's Suho?" Nayeon asked. You smiled at the mention of his name and nodded "he's good! He's back home this week because it's his brother's birthday". Nayeon nodded "cute, he's a good brother". You nodded "yeah he's so nice" and she smiled "and still hot?". You blushed nodding and Nayeon giggled "it's so nice that his niceness doesn't cancel that out". "If anything it makes it stronger" you explained "I see him being so kind and sweet and that makes me attracted to him and then he takes his shirt off and I want him even more". Nayeon laughed "that totally makes sense, nice guys are so hot" and you nodded. "So things are good between you?" Nayeon asked and you nodded "really good".
Nayeon took a breath before going for the million-pound question "good enough for you to consider going official?". You paused and were quiet for a few seconds "I'm not sure". "Are you still worried about if you'd make it as a couple?" Nayeon asked. You nodded "yeah... it's difficult because I know we've changed but I'm happy now so why change it?". Nayeon paused "well I guess there's no reason to...except the security side of things". "Security side?" you asked and Nayeon nodded "yeah just if you're not exclusive Suho's allowed to sleep with other girls right?". You paused "I guess...". "Would you be okay with that?". The thought honestly hadn't occurred to you but now it did you knew the answer "no". Nayeon frowned "yeah I’d be the same...but I also agree with you, you should only date Suho if you want to be his girlfriend not just because you don't want someone else to be". You frowned "see that sounds nice, being Suho's girlfriend". Nayeon smiled "it does?" and you nodded "I'm just worried about all the expectation it brings with it! We already broke up once so there's added pressure for things to succeed this time and that's a lot to think about. Whereas at the moment there's none of that". "Who would put this pressure on you?" Nayeon asked "because you know none of us would think badly of you if you broke up. People break up all the time and breaking up is actually an incredibly mature thing to do. It's you showing you know when to call it a day and saving each other any hurt or pain. There's no shame in it". You nodded "I guess the pressure would come from me...and I don't want to hurt Suho, I'd hate myself if I hurt him". Nayeon took your hand "don't worry we all know you don't want to hurt him and Suho knows that". You nodded feeling teary and Nayeon squeezed your hand "plus I think you make Suho really happy so there's no need to worry about that. In a relationship or not he's smitten with you so you definitely make him happy". You blushed "thanks Nayeon" and she smiled "no problem" hugging you "wanna watch a movie?" and you nodded.
Nayeon felt like she was low-key betraying you but she texted Baekhyun telling him you wanted to date Suho but were scared of the pressure increasing and of hurting Suho. Baekhyun thought you were so sweet and found it so telling how your main concern was hurting Suho. He thought that more than anything was why the two of you should be together. If you cared about someone that much you should give it a go but now he had to convince Suho of that. He told Nayeon he would encourage Suho delicately and she asked him to let her know if he needed her to do anything more. Mission infiltrate your group was a resounding success.
Baekhyun was a lot less subtle than Nayeon when he appraoched Suho. "So have you thought any more about asking Y/n out?" Baekhyun asked him one afternoon. Everyone paused confused where the topic had come from and Suho blushed "no...why?". "I just think you should" Baekhyun said with a smile "that's all". Suho shook his head "I have no idea if Y/n wants that". "I think she would" Baekhyun said "if you just explain to her that second time's the charm and reassure her there's no pressure I'm sure she'd be on board".
Suho didn't speak anymore on the topic but Baekhyun's words did stick with him and he thought about them every time he saw you. He decided he'd just have to go for it and was going to ask you after today's award show. You looked beautiful and Suho told you so as soon as he could at the afterparty. You blushed "you look good yourself". Suho smiled and went to reply when someone knocked into Suho.
It was Red Velvet's Irene and she rushed to apologise and insisted on buying Suho a drink. You'd noticed Irene paying more attention to Suho recently and wondered if you weren't the only one who'd noted Suho's hotness. As you saw the two of the talking an idea occurred to you. Irene seemed into Suho and Suho's admiration of Irene was well known. Maybe they'd like to hook up too and you decided to let them because Nayeon's words had hit home but in an unexpected way.
You realised it was wrong to gatekeep Suho and were searching for a way to tell him it was okay if he wanted to hook up with other girls. You couldn't have zero labels and also tell him what to do. You figured this was the best way to avoid hurting Suho, you weren't dating him so couldn't hurt him that way but were also setting him free by letting him know he didn't owe you anything. It was a win-win!
So when he returned from the bar you smiled "you can go dance with Irene if you want" you said and Suho smiled at you "no it's fine". "Seriously" you smiled back at him "I know you've always had a thing for her so go. You don't owe me anything we're not together". Suho paused his smile vanishing "I know but I'm here with you...". "You're too nice" you laughed trying to play it cool "we're not a couple so go do whatever you want to do with Irene, that's the plus of not being official right? No restraints" you said shooting Suho a bright smile which you didn't truly feel.
Suho meanwhile felt so shaken. It was totally within your right to not want to date him but to hear you say it was another thing. Suho felt really upset and he couldn't bring himself to smile. "Well if that's what you want" he said and you nodded "for you to be happy? Yeah" and so Suho walked away without another word.
Meanwhile Baekhyun and Nayeon were watching the two of you for any sign Suho had asked you to be official. They saw how tense the two of you were but mistook that for "telling someone you want to date them" tension not "telling the person you like to go hook up with a beautiful idol". "Oh they look serious!" Baekhyun said excitedly and Nayeon sat forward "he must be asking her! I hope he can convince her". "He can" Baekhyun said "plus Y/n wants to be with him! So I bet after he tells her there's no pressure that will be it. She'll collapse into his arms". Nayeon grinned excitedly and then paused seeing you smile "oh she's happy! He must've said it!". Baekhun paused because Suho still seemed really tense but you were indeed really smiley. Then Suho nodded and Baekhyun figured Nayeon was right...until he got up and walked right to Irene. "What is going on?" Nayeon asked.
You watched Suho walk away and let out a shaky breath. You felt like you were going to burst into tears any second and wondered why. Shouldn't you feel good after doing the right thing? Suho approached Irene and you saw the girl smile brightly when she saw him. They looked so good together and Irene was the it girl of SM. It surely wouldn't be long before Suho switched from her to you but at least if he ended it with you instead of you hurting him, you wouldn't be able to hurt him. That was surely better but it didn't make you feel any better.
"Hey are you okay?" Nayeon asked sitting down next to you and you nodded "yeah of course, are you?". She nodded not taking her eyes off you "what happened with Suho". You paused blinking "I...told him to go for it with Irene". Nayeon frowned "wait but why? You like him so why would you encourage him to get with another girl". You tried to explain it was for his own good but your words got muddled and before you knew it you were crying. Nayeon knew you wouldn't want Suho to see so she rushed you from the room to somewhere more private.
Baekhyun saw you burst into tears and knew the conversation couldn't have gone well. Especially because Suho was definitely flirting with Irene and very successfully. Baekhyun was worried Suho was going to ruin whatever he had with you tonight so he quickly stepped in. "Hey Irene, Yeri was looking for you". "She was?" Irene asked leader mode kicking in "is she okay?". "I don't know but she said something about needing you and she seemed a little stressed". Irene frowned "I'll go see if I can find her thanks Baekhyun" and she rushed away.
Suho knew Baekhyun was lying and turned to him "what was that for?". "What are you doing?" Baekhyun replied "why would you do this to Y/n?". Suho looked down "Y/n suggested it". "What!" Baekhyun cried and Suho sighed "she told me we're just casual and she likes that. She doesn't want a thing to change...except for me to hook up with other girls. I figured it must be because she's seeing other people and has only just realised I've not been. I feel like such an idiot" Suho said and Baekhyun went to tell him he must've got something wrong when Irene returned. "Yeri said she never asked me and none of the other girls did" looking at Baekhyun. Baekhyun paused "is she sure? Was it not her?". "Baekhyun what's going on?" Irene asked and Baekhyun turned to Suho "Hyung I really need to speak with you". Suho shook his head "stop messing around Baekhyun and leave us alone" and he put his arm around Irene and led her away.
Suho and Irene danced for a while and flirted back and forth. They'd always been friendly but this was definitely something more and Irene had never looked at him the way she was tonight. Suho supposed he must be the luckiest guy in the world to have Irene look at him like that but he didn't feel happy on the inside no matter how smiley he was on the outside. All he could think of was you and how you didn't want him.
They stopped dancing to grab a drink and Suho couldn't help but look around for you but you were nowhere to be seen. He wondered where you'd gone when Irene spoke "looking for someone?". "Of course not, who could look anywhere else when you're right in front of them?". Irene laughed "sure you weren't looking for Y/n?". Suho shook his head "no not at all, why would I?" replying far too quickly. "Are you and Y/n not a thing?" Irene asked "I'd heard you were back together". "We hook up but we're not together" Suho said "trust me that won't be an issue at all". "So she's okay with this?" Irene asked and Suho nodded "super okay". "And are you?" Irene asked and Suho froze. "What? Of course I'm okay with this! You're really pretty and I've always had a thing for you". Irene paused "are you sure? I saw you with Y/n earlier and you seem a little off sorts, did you argue or something?". Suho paused "I...not exactly". "Are you sure?" Irene asked "Suho we don't have to do anything if you're unsure. I don't like interfering with couples". "But we're not a couple and we never will be!" Suho said snapping and then he sighed saying it again slower "we're never going to be a couple again...I got my one shot with her and I blew it".
Meanwhile outside Nayeon had finally calmed you down and understood the situation. "So you figured the only way you could still be with him and not hurt him was to let him date other people?" Nayeon asked and you nodded. "I figured I couldn't have him without sharing him so thought if I encouraged him to see other people then it wouldn't be so bad". "Y/n!" Nayeon said hugging you "I never said you were a bad person! I was just encouraging you to be open to dating Suho because he wants to ask you out!". "He does?" you asked and Nayeon paused "probably shouldn't have told you that".
Suho felt like such a mess. Irene had been really nice to him and promised they could still be friends. She also told him to go and talk to you but Suho couldn't face any more rejection. So he was just heading home so he could dive head-first into bed when Chen and Kai approached him. "Hey is Y/n okay?" Chen asked and Suho paused "Y/n, I think so why?". "We saw her crying and wanted to make sure she was alright". "Crying? When?" Suho asked. They frowned "erm about an hour ago" Kai said and Chen nodded "it was after you two talked. Nayeon came over to her and she started crying". Suho felt so confused but he knew he had to make sure you were okay. "Did you see where she went?" he asked but they both shook their heads. Suho was looking around for you when he heard someone call his name. It was Baekhyun. "Can we talk now?" he asked and Suho shook his head "no where's Y/n? I need to talk to her". "I know where she is, we can talk on the way" Baekhyun said and he led Suho outside.
"Nayeon what do you mean Suho wants to date me?" you asked and the girl sighed "okay don't hate me but Baekhyun told me Suho wanted to ask you to be his girlfriend but was worried you'd say no. Baekhyun didn't want Suho to get hurt so he asked me to see if you were open to dating Suho". "So that's what all those questions were the other day!" you said and Nayeon nodded "I'm so sorry but I just didn't want Suho to get hurt and Y/n I really think you'd be good together. You don't need to be this afraid". You sighed and went to argue when Suho stepped into the area where you were sat.
Baekhyun had explained how Nayeon had asked you if you wanted to date and how they'd gotten in this mess. Suho was horrified and felt so bad. He couldn't believe he'd made you cry and no matter how much Baekhyun tried to comfort him he felt so guilty. Then Suho saw you, with your puffy red eyes and he froze. Seeing you so upset and knowing he was the cause was way worse actually seeing the evidence of it and he couldn't believe he'd been so stupid. You looked up and saw him and he realised he should probably move.
"Suho?" you asked and he paused before coming towards you "Y/n I'm so sorry I made you cry! I only went after Irene because I thought you didn't want me and were trying to make me less clingy". "No I was trying to be nice and not leave you tied to me". "But I want to be tied to you" Suho said "in any way possible" and you blushed.
"Okay so we're going to go" Baekhyun said gesturing to Nayeon and they rushed away leaving the two of you alone. Silence settled and Suho looked at you "can I sit down?" and you nodded.
"So Baekhyun's told me some things Nayeon's said but I want to hear it from you... I'd like to date you Y/n but I understand you have some worries about that". You sighed "I just don't want to hurt you...what if it doesn't work and we've gone through all this for nothing?". "Well you could argue that with any relationship" Suho argued and you nodded "yeah but there's more pressure with us because we already broke up once before". Suho paused "well I don't think so, people get back together all the time! Chen and his wife broke up 3 times in their first year of dating and now look at them". "They did?" you asked and Suho nodded "people make mistakes Y/n but that's never a reason not to try, if you think you might be happy...". You paused "I just don't want to hurt you" and Suho took your hand "Y/n that is so sweet but you don't have to worry about that. I'm a big strong boy and even if we did break up I'd of course be upset but it'd be okay again eventually. So please don't worry about me. Just think of what you want because that's all I care about". You blushed "are you sure? You don't think I should be worried?". "I meant everything I said Y/n" and you nodded. "The I'd want to be your girlfriend" and Suho smiled "really?" and you nodded. Suho grinned "Y/n I will happily be your boyfriend" and he hugged you tightly. "You've made me so happy" Suho said and you smiled "I hope I always will". Suho pulled away and rested his hand on your chin "don't even worry about it, you do it naturally" and he kissed you.
When you finally pulled away Suho sighed and bundled you against his chest "I'll never stop being grateful for the guys forcing me to show off my abs" Suho said and you laughed. "It wasn't just the abs that brought me back". Suho smiled "you sure?" and you melted at the way he was looking at you. "Okay I'll find some way to thank the guys too" making Suho smiled "I will also got to find some way to thank the guys but I'm hoping our methods will be very different" Suho said huskily and you swallowed "I hope so too". "Want to go try them out?" Suho asked "I've got a girlfriend to take care of". You nodded and both rushed to get back to Suho's.
The next morning, you came downstairs together holding hands and the guys all noticed but didn't say anything. Baekhyun looked like he was dying to but D.O. had clearly threatened him or something because the boy was on his best behaviour. You felt bad for him so looked to Suho who smiled. "Just so you guys know my girlfriend might be over a lot more" and everyone froze. "Girlfriend?" Chanyeol asked and Suho nodded taking your hand "we're back together".
The guys cheered and rushed to offer you their congratulations and Baekhyun claimed all the credit. "It was me who got them together you know?" he called loudly and you turned to him. "Yes that reminds me, you and Nayeon were scheming behind our backs weren't you". "Yeah...having those secret talks" Suho said putting a hand on his arm and Baekhyun froze "I...we only did it out of love and now look! The two of you are back together so you're welcome". You smiled "oh we'll find a way to thank you right Suho?". Suho nodded "definitely". Baekhyun paused looking between you two "I don't know if to be scared or turned on" making Suho lunge for him. Baekhyun screamed and ran around the house as Suho chased him. You watched amused until Lay gently touched your arm. "It's good to have you back Y/n". You smiled "good to be back".
You'd dated Suho when you were a trainee but it wasn't really a relationship more a baby one. You were both so young and innocent it was really sweet and soft. You were each other's first relationship and cared about one another but mutually agreed to end it as you rarely got time to see one another. It was more a sweet friendship than a passionate relationship and that's why you were surprised by how you felt seeing Suho perform years later.
Exo always gave great performances so you were excited to see them on stage but almost immediately your eyes went straight to Suho because
he looked really good! It was a sexy concept and it suited him so well. He was acting wonderfully and had transformed from a sweet leader into a hot performer. You'd always thought he was good looking but this was something different. You were admiring him and kind of wishing you were that dancer with him. The thought was so sudden it shocked you but stuck with you all night so when you went home you searched for recent Exo performances which again was something you hadn't done in years. You'd stayed friendly with Exo but hadn't really kept up to date with their music. You realised Suho had turned into a really good performer and again he stood out to you in their music videos making you feel warm, especially with any of their hot concepts. Then a clip came up of Exo showing off Suho's abs and you nearly spat out your drink because since when was Suho so ripped? He did not look like that when you dated him and you were more than attracted to him after all this time than you had ever been when you were dating him.
You couldn't get Suho out of your head and when the next award show came around you got nervous knowing he'd be there. You were extra conscious of your appearance and wanted to look good. You wanted him to spot you and do a double take. For him to feel what you felt when you saw him. Your group Twice were seated across the aisle from Exo and you managed to get a seat at the end of the row by letting all the girls go in front of you. Jihyo shot you a confused look and Jeongyeon looked concerned. So you claimed it was because you'd be the one going to the bathroom all the time and they believed you. From your view, you could see Suho clearly and you tried to act like you didn't even know he existed but your eyes kept going to him. He was wearing a gorgeous warm jumper that fitted him wonderfully and looked so cosy, really suiting the winter weather. You couldn't help but imagine how soft it must be or what it'd be like to run your hands across it. Finally, Suho looked up and happened to catch your eye. He smiled at you and you smiled back at him.
You wanted more out of that interaction but what could you do across a crowded room with cameras and idols everywhere? So when a chance presented itself at the after party you decided this was more appropriate.
You saw Suho go up to the bar alone and followed. You pretended you didn't know he was there and when he called your name did a fake "I didn't see you? How are you?". You went in for a hug and Suho happily hugged you back "I'm great! How are you? Loved your most recent song by the way". "Aww that's so sweet thank you!" you smiled "I'm good too! You look really nice tonight by the way, I was thinking that earlier". Suho looked down at his jumper "really?" and you nodded "yeah you always looked good in red" you said way more confidently than you felt. Suho's smile only got brighter "thanks! You look amazing as always". "As always?" you asked and Suho rolled his eyes "come on Y/n you know you're a knockout and always have been". You blushed slightly "I wouldn't describe myself that way but if you insist, it takes one to know one". "I'll happily accept that too" he smiled and you could see the cogs turning in Suho's head and he paused before asking "would you like to get a drink with me? We can catch up". You agreed and broke off on your own finding a small table for 2 while both your members stared wondering if they'd gone back in time.
After you'd finished your drink you both figured it was best you go back to your members and the second you sat down yours had tons of questions for you. "Okay what's going on?" Jihyo asked "did we really just see you flirting with Suho?". "We were just catching up" you argued but Dahyun shot you a look "you were laughing and flicking your hair a lot for just a catch-up". You blushed "I think I want him again okay?". "You think?" Sana asked and you blushed "okay I know! I've been feeling this attraction to him for a few weeks because he's so hot and he never had a body like that when we were dating so I kind of got roped back in. Am I an idiot?". "No!" all the girls cried. "Y/n you can sleep with whoever you want, it doesn't have to mean anything" Nayeon said "unless you want it to" Jeongyeon said and Nayeon nodded. "I don't blame you at all" Momo said "if my ex suddenly got a lot hotter I'd be right back in there". The girls all agreed and Chaeyoung turned to you "okay so what can we do?". "Do?" you asked and Tyuzu nodded "how can we help you get Suho?". "You want to help?" you asked and Sana rolled her eyes "of course! He was totally eyeing you up and down so it shouldn't be hard but what do you want to do?". "I'm not sure, what do you think is best?" you asked and Jihyo smiled "shots and dancing, I'm telling you Suho will be up as soon as he sees you out there". You were a blushing mess but agreed and all your girls cheered. Jihyo bought tons of shots for courage and then the girls all made a big deal about heading for the dance floor so nobody in the place could miss it, including Suho.
When Suho returned to his table he got a similar treatment with the boys all teasing him and demanding to know what was happening. He shrugged feeling the right amount of tipsy "I don't know, Y/n was being cute and flirty so I decided to have a drink with her. That's all". The guys nodded "sure, sure, sure" not believing him but left him alone. Then when they all saw you go up to dance with your friends Suho sat up straighter. He watched you being swept away by your girls and Sehun burst out laughing seeing his face "excited hyung?". Suho blushed as the other members realised what was happening. "Go and dance with her" Chanyeol said and Suho paused "I don't know...". "Oh come on she was so into you!" Kai said and Baekhyun nodded "totally giving you bedroom eyes". Suho was still unsure so Sehun sighed "do you want us to come with you?". "Yes please" Suho said and Kai, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, Lay and Sehun all came with him. Chen, Xiumin and D.O. said they'd cheer from the sidelines.
You of course noticed Suho appear on the dance floor near you and felt drawn to him but tried to play it cool. Then your most social members started interacting playfully (Dahyun and Chanyeol to be specific) and so you were mixed up together. Suho found you and shot you a beautiful smile which you tried your best to return despite how nervous you felt.
You started dancing near one another, then gradually got closer until you were in front of one another. Suho was definitely following your lead and when you put your arms around his neck he was more than happy to close that distance. He put his hands on your waist and moved his hips beautifully. When did Suho get so good at sexy dancing? Your brain couldn't comprehend how hot your ex was and how this had snook up on you. Everyone else in the room may as well have vanished because all you could see was Suho and he felt similarly about you.
The way you were moving was driving him crazy and he remembered why he'd asked you out all those years ago. "I forgot just how beautiful you are" Suho whispered and you sighed, turning to face him "trust me the feeling's mutual" and kissed him. Suho kissed you back immediately and stop dancing so he could concentrate wholly on you. You trailed your hands from his shoulder to his neck to his chest and sighed when you felt the muscle there. Suho laughed recognising that look "want to get out of here?". "Hell yes!" you agreed and ran to Suho's place which was a short walk away.
You remembered the way even after all this time and both laughed at how spontaneous this was. When you got inside the cold had got you on the short walk and Suho noticed rubbing your arms. "You're freezing, let me help you" and he picked you up carrying you upstairs. You laughed at the sensation and Suho lay you down on the soft blankets before he felt the cold of your legs. "Even your poor beautiful legs too" he said "I'll have to pay them some attention" and you shivered at the way he looked at you. "Just whatever you're going to do, start already" you said and Suho nodded "as you wish" and he got to work.
***
"So, not that I'm not very happy with this but what prompted this tonight for you?" Suho asked. "Honestly? It's been building for a few weeks when I started noticing how well you've matured and how hot you've gotten. Not that you weren't before just previously you looked like a teenager and now you're a man" you said blushing. Suho couldn't be happier to hear that and his grip on you tightened. "So what about you?" you asked. Suho smiled "honestly I've always found you attractive even after we've broken up. But I stopped looking at you figuring you didn't want me but tonight when you started sending signals it didn't take me long to want you again. I agree that now we're both older everything's better. You're so much more confident now and it's really hot". "Well when I see a video of your abs what was I meant to do ?". "Ahhh so that's what sparked it?" Suho asked laughing and you agreed "I couldn't stop thinking about you after it so yeah". Suho smiled "really? Wanna tell me what it made you think of?" with a mischievous smile "then I can recreate it for you". You blushed but couldn't resist an offer like that so told him your dreams and he made them a reality.
The next morning you got the weirdest sense of déjà vu waking up next to Suho. Then last night came back and you couldn't stop smiling. You knew hooking up with an ex was meant to be a big no-no but you didn't care. Last night was amazing and it felt so nice to be with someone who already knew you well. To skip the formalities and go straight to what you wanted.
You checked the time on your phone before returning to lay beside Suho and he opened an eye. "Good morning" he said wrapping an arm around you and you settled against him pressing a small kiss to his chest "good morning". He chuckled and you dozed for a little while together before the other guys got up and made it impossible to sleep. Suho invited you to stay for breakfast and you agreed.
When you came downstairs the kitchen was full of Suho's members who you suspected had all made it to breakfast for this very reason. They all watched you as you walked in like curious puppies and there was a slight tension in the room but not necessarily a bad one. "So how was it?" Baekhyun asked suddenly breaking the silence and D.O. punched his arm. "I meant being back here not the sex!" he cried massaging his arm. "It's nice being back" you admitted "although I'm getting the weirdest déjà vu with everything. I had to remember what year it was when I woke up and saw your nightstand" you said to Suho who smiled "yeah maybe I should've redecorated in 3 years" making the boys laugh. The boys asked how you'd been getting on and you caught up with their lives. Chen was showing you pictures of his children when Sehun knocked Suho to get his attention. "So what is this hyung? Are you back together?". Suho paused "I'm not sure" he admitted "I don't think so" he said watching you with Chen "neither of us have said anything about it so I guess it's just casual". "Fair enough" Sehun nodded and Suho's gaze returned to you. He smiled at how excitedly you chatted to Chen and felt happy you were back in his life in some fashion.
Suho drove you home afterwards and you paused outside your house. You could tell he wanted to say something, to ask what this was, so decided to beat him to it. "So last night was really fun, would you maybe like to do it again?". Suho's eyes lit up as he looked at you. "Yes I'd love to!" he smiled "you have my number so just text me if you want me". Your stomach fluttered at those words and you dodged "definitely" before getting out of the car. When you got to your front door you looked back and found Suho watching you. He blushed and you saw him swear and laugh. You waved to him and he waved back adorably before driving away.
The second you opened the door you had an audience. "Sooooo" your members asked when you walked in and you smiled "it was amazing" and they all cheered. "Did you have fun?" Nayeon asked and you nodded. "He was so hot and good and just made me feel amazing" you blushed making the girls giggle excitedly. "That's a resounding yes!" Chaeyoung cried and you smiled "we've agreed something casual, he told me to text him whenever I want him". The girls all erupted and there was a mix of congratulations and joking anger that you'd found a hot hookup so easily. "Do you think it will ever evolve into more?" Dahyun asked and everyone went quiet to hear your answer. "I'm not sure because didn't we already do that? We tried dating and it didn't work". "Yeah but you dated ages ago when you were different people" Jihyo pointed out. "Plus you never broke up because you were incompatible you said it was because you were too busy and there was no passion, the first part hasn't gone but we can safely say the second has!" Jeongyeon said. You blushed but couldn't disagree "that's true but for now I'm just going to see how we go. Just have some fun together" and the girls all cheered again.
You and Suho settled into a nice casual agreement seeing each other about once a week usually at the weekends. You alternated places so it was fair on the members and you actually fit into one another lives again very easily, almost eerily. Like Jihyo said you had changed in your time apart so there were noticeable differences but the same Suho was there too. He hadn't lost any of the sweet characteristics he had as a trainee and he'd just matured perfectly like a fine wine.
Your deal was quite exciting and any event where Suho was also in attendance gave you excited butterflies. You were aware of where he was in the room at all times and couldn't wait to see him again later. Today you were sat a few tables down from him and yet you could feel when he was looking at you and caught him a fair few times making him blush. You knew you should probably look away from him to hide your agreement but you couldn't help it!
When you performed the members were all smiling and Suho tried not to react but he loved watching you perform. You came alive on the stage and your strut was runway-worthy. His eyes were on you in the dance break and when you reached the high note and sent a wink out in his direction he went very pink and warm. The guys were all giggling and Suho drank a lot of water trying to cool himself down. When you checked your phone after the performance you saw you'd gotten one from Suho and smiled. "Fancy skipping the party and going straight back to mine?" it asked. You didn't even have to think about the reply.
Your members were thrilled at how this was playing out. They saw how kindly Suho treated you and loved that this arrangement was working so well and they weren't the only ones. When you told your sister you were involved again she was thrilled. When you asked why she was so happy she told you she always liked Suho and knew he'd treat you kindly. One day you got home from rehearsal late and found Suho playing a video game with Mina casually on the sofa. It was so sweet and to see your quietest member had accepted him spoke volumes. "You okay"? Suho asked seeing you staring and you nodded "yep I'm just happy" and Suho beamed "good".
The next morning you were in bed chatting when Suho casually said "your sister followed me on Instagram again" and you paused. "Yeah, I told her we're hanging out and she has a strong reaction". "Bad?" Suho asked and you shook your head "no the opposite, she was very happy". "Really?" Suho asked "why?'. "She likes you, says you're a nice guy" you said poking his shoulder and Suho smiled. "I am huh?". "Guess you're okay" you said and Suho smirked "just okay?" trying to turn you to face him. "Yep" you said trying not to look at him but Suho just leaned over you and kissed you, distracting you immediately. When he pulled away he smiled "still just okay?". "No you're perfect" you replied and kissed him again.
Your words stuck with Suho and he wondered if to just go all in and tell you how he felt. He'd been so happy since he'd been seeing you again and all the members noticed. "You smiled a lot anyway but now it's continuous" Chen said and Chanyeol added "and when Y/n's been over the night before notice how his step is higher? He does a skip". The members all agreed and Suho had no idea he even did that. "I'm just happy" he shrugged mimicking you and they all awed. "We're pleased for you" Xiumin told him and Kai nodded "have you asked her out? I mean are you together?". Suho shook his head "she said to just keep it casual so we're not dating or anything". "But do you want to be?" Baekhyun asked "you both seem really happy together and this feels a little more than a fling. You text all the time and only have eyes for one another". Suho shrugged "well I don't know, Y/n could be with other guys besides me". Lay shook his head "based on how she acts around you, I don't think so" and the guys agreed. "I don't want to scare her away" Suho admitted "what if I ask and she's not even contemplating a relationship?". The guys nodded seeing Suho's concern and let the subject drop but Baekhyun had an idea.
He decided if Suho wouldn't ask you then he'd get an answer...from one of your members but he just had to work out which one?

This will be a two part series and part two is HERE
I always thought Suho was the cute member and then I saw this video and lost it because HE’S HOT TOO? So that’s what inspired this series :)
Summary: Professor Kim Junmyeon has a crush–a crush on the newest addition to the history department. Taking fate into their own hands, some light-fingered students make it their mission to get these two together.
A/N: I’m almost done with requests from back in June so I present a Junmyeon request. I’m not even going to pretend that Junmyeon’s legendary “Playboy” solo performance wasn’t the inspiration for this fic, despite it being fluff central up in here. Hope you enjoy!
Tagging @cxsmicmyeon because I promised! 😊

Neon lights flashed. Pins scattered. Balls crashed down waxed, wooden lanes. The smell of pizza intermingled with the tang of floor polish.
The neon lights glared off the shiny, waxed floors of the bowling alley and Junmyeon was accosted by the intermingling smells of pizza and floor polish–a stark contrast to his usual habitat. The harsh lines and dark wooden panels of the lecture hall have vanished and in their place, an 80’s-reminiscent wonderland remains. Buttery leather shoes traded for rubber soles, the hum of student voices for the whir of the ball machine. This wasn’t the type of place Junmyeon usually frequented, much more accustomed to mood lighting and a crisp, fine wine.
It was the start of a new school year, which was marked as per usual, with a department-wide celebration encompassing both research faculty of the university’s history department, as well as their student lab workers. His department head was an avid bowler, which was precisely how Junmyeon found himself bowling in a three-piece suit and clown shoes.
A voice shouted his name and a hand beckoned him forward to take a ball. His sometimes most and sometimes least favorite graduate student, Sehun, plopped a ball into his hands with a wink, and pushed him towards the front. The little punk. Junmyeon made a mental note to assign Sehun to cleaning duty next week. After all, the archives had been looking extra dusty lately.
Looking around, he noticed the number of faces that had gathered to watch the game. He wanted to maintain his reputation–respected, dependable, and worthy of admiration–and vowed he won’t lose that by sucking at bowling. You can do this, Jun. Strength. Poise. Precision. With that in mind, he straightened his arm and swung it back, releasing the ball down the waxed, wooden lane.
It went…and went…and went…straight into the gutter. Not quite.
Junmyeon stood there in shock, not really believing he launched his ball exactly the opposite of where it was supposed to go. The hooting and hollering of the onlookers reached his ears and he turned around, feeling heat on the back of his neck. Sehun chose this time to tell a particularly biting joke, causing Junmyeon to blush profusely.
I guess he wants two weeks of cleaning duty, he mused to himself, leveling the taller man with a half-hearted glare.
In the middle of stewing, he almost missed the breezy laugh that made its way to his ears, the slew of voices behind him quieting to a low buzz. He watched as a woman stepped forward, walking with confidence to snare a ball from the machine. He tried not to stare, but couldn't help himself, frozen in place like he’d been turned to stone.
Pushing her hair behind her ear, she toyed with the little baby hairs at the crown of her head to keep them out of her eyes. Her cheeks were flushed an enchanting rosy pink, from the heat or from one too many beers, he didn’t know.
As he passed her on his way to sit down, she patted his arm gently. A jolt of electricity ran through his body, the sting of humiliation temporarily forgotten.
“Hey, don’t worry about it. We all throw a gutter ball once in a while,” she sympathized, offering him a smile that made his heart skip a beat.
Without conscious thought, he found himself nodding in agreement to her words, flashing her a gummy smile so wide it hurt his cheeks. He took a seat beside his colleague, Minseok, AKA the other Professor Kim, who grinned and slapped him on the back, clearly amused at his lack of athletic prowess.
Junmyeon watched as the mystery woman took position.
Like a seasoned pro, she took several intentional steps forward and swung her arm back, like the movement of a pendulum. She released the ball low, holding her position as the ball barreled down the lane with impressive speed. A perfect shot. The pins fell, clattering to the ground, before being swept back by a metal arm. Animated bowling pins danced all over the scoring screen, declaring “Strike! Strike!” in chipmunk-like voices.
“Who is that?” he breathed, leaning over to whisper in Minseok’s ear.
Minseok raised an eyebrow, surprised at Junmyeon’s sudden interest.
“Her? That’s Professor____ ____, the newest tenure-track hire in our department. Heard she came here over the summer from some big-shot university abroad. Boss’s excited because she’s apparently gained a reputation as “The Grant Fairy”, and you know how much he loves additional funding.”
Junmyeon nodded, but he barely heard what his friend was saying, too caught up in his newest colleague’s radiant smile and silly celebration dance. A strange sense of pride washed over him as you sank ball after ball in just the right spot. His skin prickled when you reached up to high-five the other, other Professor Kim, Ki-bum, beaming up at him in a way that made something inside Junmyeon twist.
It wasn’t rational. Not rational at all to feel this way about something he’d only just met. And Junmyeon lived by facts and figures. True or false. Black and white, but never gray. He fleetingly wondered if this rollercoaster of emotions was caused by excessive consumption of alcohol, but then quickly remembered he’d been drinking club soda all night. Sadly, no wine to be found in a place like this.
~*~
A smirk crossed Sehun’s handsome features. Watching Professor Kim Junmyeon lose his mind over the department’s newest addition was the unexpected highlight of the evening. As by-the-book as they came, the older man has little tolerance for the times–the very, very minimal times–that he’d caught Sehun filming Tik Tok dances during work hours. He scratched his chin, sure that a romantic diversion such as this might loosen the older man up for the greater good. Having worked in his lab for several years, Sehun considered himself an expert on the illustrious academic’s quirks and characteristics. Unfortunately, where Junmyeon was smooth with a pen, he wasn’t smooth with words, at least outside of a lecture hall, that is.
The cogs in Sehun’s brain started to turn, and a plan took shape behind his eyes. Sehun couldn’t help but pat himself on the back for having such a brilliant idea. Slipping off unnoticed from the party, he shot off text messages to his future accomplices. This wasn’t a one-man job, but rather a collaboration, one might say. All he had to do was sit back and watch as the fun began.

“Okay, let’s go through this one more time, Jun,” Minseok instructed, pulling Junmyeon over to face the mirror. “You walk into her office and you say…”
“Hello Professor ___. I was…um…wondering if you wanted to…go out for dinner sometime?” Junmyeon stared at himself in the mirror, feeling awkward–like a high school student nervously practicing a confession to the girl he likes while hiding in the boys’ bathroom.
Minseok hung his head in mock shame. “Say it with confidence, Jun! Again–and like you really mean it this time!”
Junmyeon tried once more, feeling silly. He spoke passionately and eloquently to hundreds of students everyday, so why now was it so hard to string a simple sentence together?
Minseok was speaking, but Jun could barely hear him–his mind elsewhere–on you.
Picking up the leather-bound book on the table, he ran his fingers over the slight grooves in the spine. It was this simple, non-assuming object that had started it all.
The air had been heavy with anticipation, as it always was at 3:30 PM on a Friday. His students were preoccupied, thinking only of the Netflix they’d binge, the pizza they’d demolish, and the alcoholic beverages they’d consume–much too distracted to appreciate his riveting lecture on the intricacies of black holes.
The bell had rung and he’d sent them off with a reminder to complete their homework, unheeded in their haste to depart. In the still silence of the empty lecture hall, he’d noticed an abandoned book on one of the desks–no doubt forgotten by an absent-minded student in the flurry of activity moments before.
Opening to the cover, he hadn’t expected to find your name scrawled in the corner, but to his surprise, there it was. Since that day, the book has taken up residence in his office. He’d enjoyed having it with him and he often caught himself glancing at it, smiling like a giddy school boy because it reminded him of you. But he knew he had to give it back–it wouldn’t be right to keep something that wasn’t his. It was this unassuming object that would give him the excuse to talk to you–at least beyond the occasional exchange of words in the hall or at the coffee pot in the teacher’s lounge.
“ –so then you…Junmyeon!” Minseok cut off mid-sentence, impatiently waving his hand in front of Junmyeon’s face.
Junmyeon apologized for his lack of focus, grateful Minseok’s as forgiving as he was. Not just any friend would give up his afternoon to talk him through how to be smooth with the ladies. And Minseok was smooth with the ladies. The other Professor Kim had zero inhibitions when it came to romantic partners–suave, well-dressed, and always ready with a witty comeback–Minseok was never without someone adorning his arm.
Junmyeon wished he could have even half that amount of confidence.

The light glowing from your office drew Junmyeon like a moth to a flame. It was way past the usual time he’d leave from work, but lately he found more and more reasons to stay. Light drifting out from under your door? Term papers to read. Passed by you in the hall on his way out? Oops, those tests needed to be graded tonight.
Today was no different, the moon shining high in the sky as Junmyeon made his daily pilgrimage to you, the leather tome he’d harbored uncharacteristically heavy in his hands. Standing outside your door, Junmyeon’s nerves flared. He practiced this over and over with Minseok and he told himself it would all be okay. He raised his hand to knock on the door, knowing it was now or never or he'd lose his nerve. Your voice sounded from within, spurring him forward and through the door.
~*~
You looked at the clock, shocked to see the hours had passed so quickly. It had been several weeks since you started your position here and you finally felt like you had some space to breathe. It was a big change leaving your old job, but you could happily say now that it was worth it. This job provided you with things you didn’t have before–a team of student researchers of your own, a promise of tenure, and the type of salary that would keep you traveling for years to come. Your colleagues had been welcoming too, and your mind wandered to one in particular. Dark hair, slightly curled at the end, bright eyes, and pretty, pink lips. They looked so soft and you wondered if they’d feel that way against your–
A knock sounded at the door and the spell was broken. You shook your head, reminding yourself to keep it out of the gutter. You called for them to enter, wondering who could possibly still be at school at this late hour.
The door opened and in walked the man you’d just been fantasizing about not 30 seconds before. You rubbed your eyes, wanting to make sure this wasn’t some kind of sleep deprivation-induced fantasy. But no, he was still there when your gaze cleared, a small smile on his handsome face, and looking better than anyone had a right to in a three-piece brown tweed suit.
Your cheeks warmed in response and you hoped it wasn’t obvious to him. Yes, you had a crush, as much as you didn’t want to admit it. All the signs were there: heartbeat racing when you ran into him in the hallway, sweaty palms when you exchanged pleasantries in the break room, thoughts of him swimming in your head at all hours of the day. You remembered the night you met him, some weeks ago at the welcome party. He’d just sent the ball straight to the gutter, but you’d barely noticed, too enchanted by his expressive eyes and squishy smile.
From then on you’d thought about ways to approach him. Unsatisfied with all of them, you wished you were more extroverted, then maybe you wouldn’t even need a reason to talk to him. You could just do it. You supposed your introversion was a contributing factor to your choice in career; after all, not everyone would be thrilled to spend their time digging through dusty libraries, pouring over antique books and documents in the pursuit of answering a question you’d dedicated your entire career to answering. You had settled for staying late at work, the light in his office your guide for when it was time to leave.
Now, seeing Junmyeon here amongst your things, you thanked the universe for this divine intervention. Gesturing for him to take a seat, noted the familiar book he clutched in his hands. An awkward silence fell over the room and you waited for him to say something, anything to drown out the thump, thump, thump of your beating heart.
“Good evening, Prof. ____. I hope I’m not interrupting anything, but I…uh…found this book of yours and wanted to return it. In case you were really missing it.”
He laid the book on your desk, pushing it towards you, chuckling at the last bit.
“Ah yes, thank you Prof. Kim, I have been looking for that everywhere. Where–uh–ever did you find it?”
You, in fact, hadn’t been looking for it everywhere, but you decided he didn’t need to know that. To be honest, you hadn’t even noticed it was gone. However, you were curious how it came into his possession. You had just moved into your office, but all your books had been packed away in boxes until recently.
Junmyeon cleared his throat.
“Honestly, it was the strangest thing. I found it left on a desk after I’d finished one of my lectures. I was surprised to find it belonged to you.”
“Hmmm, that is strange,” you agreed, scratching your chin in thought. “Well, thank you again for returning it…” you trailed off, blindly scrounging for a way to make the conversation last longer.
“Yeah, no problem at all, just happy I could help.”
Junmyeon slowly got up from his chair and headed toward the door. He paused at the threshold, staring at you like he had something to say. He shook his head, causing dark locks to spill across his forehead, and resumed motion.
“Well, Professor ____, I guess I should go now. It was lovely talking to you.”
With that, he opened the door and quickly stepped through it, the door closing behind him with a gentle thump.
You stared at the door for several seconds after he’d gone, wishing you’d had the spine to say what you really wanted to say. Hey, you want to go for coffee sometime? It’s not that hard, right? Right! You could have said that instead of just saying “thank you” a hundred times!
You sighed and grabbed your book, the one Professor Kim had been so kind to return. Stroking the soft leather, you went to your bookshelf, placing it at home amongst the many others there. Behind you, the door creaked, causing you to jump in surprise. You whirled around to find Professor Kim standing there, his mouth set in a firm line.
“Oh, Professor Kim, you scared me!” you said, patting your hand over your chest in an attempt to calm your racing heart.
“My apologies Professor ____, but I couldn’t just leave without saying–couldn’t just leave without asking–”
Professor Kim took a deep breath through his nose before continuing: “ –if you wanted to go out sometime. Coffee…maybe dinner…whatever you want.”
He bit his lip before glancing down at his shoes, that bashful squishy smile gracing his handsome features again.
You stuck your finger under your nose, just to check that you were still breathing. The hand still over your heart assured you of its beating. Oh my god. It’s real. He’s asked you out on a date! Say something, you idiot!
“Coffee…maybe dinner…sounds good,” you said with a small smile. Good, yeah, that’s good. Very natural.
Junmyeon scratched his head. “Oh–okay, well that’s great…uh…when are you free? I mean, I’m free now…are you free now?” he asked, stumbling over his words.
You smiled at his endearing nervousness, so much like your own. “Yeah, I’m free now…should we…?” you trailed off, raising your eyebrows in question, nodding towards the door.
You grabbed your coat, struggling to put it on as you’d suddenly forgotten how arms work. Professor Kim–Junmyeon–as he told you to call him, held it out for you to slip your arms into. You walked together down the deserted hallway towards the Java Hut, which was blessedly open late, and you wanted to hug the universe for giving you this opportunity.
“Hey, Junmyeon?” you started, waiting for him to look at you. “After this, would you want to go bowling sometime?”
You watched as a range of emotions poured over Junmyeon’s face–embarrassment, surprise, to name a few–his shooting wide like saucers. You honestly couldn’t hold it in anymore, the look on his face was too much for you to bear, and you dissolved into a fit of giggles. Even in the dark, you could see Junmyeon’s cheeks darken to an attractive hue of pink, evidence that he wasn’t used to being teased like this.
“No shade, no tea, but I feel with a few pointers, there could be vast improvement,” you joked.
Junmyeon purses his lips, stroking his chin in mock thought.
“Well, I suppose I could be persuaded to go bowling–with the right coach, that is.”
~*~
Two sets of eyes watched silently as you and Junmyeon exited the building. Sehun held out his hand and high-fived Baekhyun, his partner in crime. It was a genius plan, really, though Baekhyun had almost gotten caught “borrowing” that book from Professor____’s office. Sure, it had taken Professor Kim several annoyingly long weeks to work up the nerve to return the book to its rightful owner and Sehun would be claiming all that over-time on his next paycheck, but it was worth it. He patted himself on the back for a job well-done, not for the first time considering a change in careers to match-making.

Chapter 6
The urgent knocking on your apartment door interrupts you in the middle of making dinner. You glance at the wall clock, the time reading 9:01 p.m., and you wonder who could possibly be at the other side of the door at this hour. You aren’t expecting anyone this late at night.
You pad toward the door in your bare feet. A familiar face greets you when you peek through the peephole, though the sight of him standing outside your apartment door isn’t familiar at all. It’s so strange that you have to remind yourself that you aren’t dreaming.
You open the door.
“Junmyeon?”
“Hi,” he smiles. “Can I come in?”
“Uh…”
“Were you studying?” he asks, already taking off his jacket. “I hope I’m not bothering you. I should’ve texted first, but I kinda came here on a whim.”
You shake your head. “No, no. I was just making dinner.” You open the door wider and let him inside, bringing him house slippers to change into.
“What’s for dinner?” He looks around your apartment, his eyes eventually settling on your kitchen counter. A smirk creeps into his lips when he sees the pot of water over the stove and the noodle packs. “Instant ramen,” he says. “How very… college student of you.”
“Hey!” you protest. “I happen to like instant ramen, thank you very much. It’s delicious and it’s cheap.”
Junmyeon scoffs as he sits on the couch. “You’ve deluded yourself into liking it because it’s cheap,” he corrects. “Stop eating that garbage. Your body will thank you in ten years.”
“I’m sorry, what are you doing here again?” you ask, because you’re pretty sure that he isn’t there to just criticize your dinner choices. “And how did you come up? Mr. Bong just let you?”
You’re not sure if you’re seeing things, but you can swear you just saw Junmyeon’s cheeks blush a little. “Oh, your doorman let me up because… um, because he saw us…”
“Oh.” Now you’re blushing, too. “Right.”
You know that he’s talking about the night of your birthday, the night he drove you home from Esperanza, the night you kissed.
You still remember everything about that kiss, even the tiniest of details. You still remember how Junmyeon’s lips still had a faint taste of strawberries because of the ice cream the two of you shared before he drove you home. You still remember how his perfume smelled like lavender, warm and comforting. You still remember how soft his lips were, and even now, about a week later, a phantom of that kiss still lingers over your mouth.
It had been everything you imagine it would be, and more.
Definitely more.
“Water’s boiling,” Junmyeon says, reeling you back into the present. You head toward the kitchen and put the noodle squares into the pot. Junmyeon follows you, this time settling on a seat at the dining table. “I came here because… Well, I wanted to talk about that night.”
Your heart suddenly feels a bit too heavy on your chest. He’s here to lecture you again, isn’t he?
“I’m sorry,” you tell him.
Junmyeon doesn’t say anything. But you feel him stand up from his seat and walk toward you, coming closer and closer until he’s close enough that the skin on your neck tingles from his proximity.
“I’m not,” he whispers.
“You’re not what?”
“I’m not sorry.” You turn around, and the first thing you see is Junmyeon’s chest. He towers a couple of inches over you, so you have to look up to meet his eyes. “I’m not sorry,” he repeats. “God knows how many times I’ve imagined that happening. I know it’s a wrong thing to imagine, but it’s true. And I’m not sorry.”
“Jun—”
“But,” he cuts you off, “that doesn’t mean we can be reckless now. I like you. A lot. Maybe more than a lot. And I don’t want anything bad to happen to you, which is why we have to be careful.”
“I understand.” Truly, you do. Junmyeon has said it over and over again, that he doesn’t want you to get in trouble because of him and especially now that you’re just a few exams away from graduating.
After all, you know now how Junmyeon feels about you. I like you, he had said. That’s a guarantee you didn’t have before, and now that you do have it, it makes the complications more bearable.
“You only have about a month and a half left,” Junmyeon says. “After that, we’ll talk again. If our feelings haven’t changed, that is.”
You shake your head. “I’m afraid my feelings aren’t going anywhere. Not sure about yours, though…”
Junmyeon laughs, his cheeks beaming as he does. “My feelings don’t change so easily, either.”
“Are you staying for dinner?”
“I can’t,” he says. “I have to grade a bunch of term papers. I still haven’t read and graded yours, to be honest. Besides, I’m not really a huge fan of instant noodles.”
You playfully slap his arm. “Stop making fun of my dinner.”
“Alright,” Junmyeon laughs again, and you can swear that it’s the sweetest sound you’ve heard all your life. “Good luck on the rest of your finals.”
Before you can stop yourself, you blurt out, “Don’t I get a kiss? For good luck?”
The smile dissolves on Junmyeon’s face. He steps toward you, walking until his face is only a couple of inches away from yours. He cups your cheek in his right hand, the pad of his thumb brushing your lower lip. An electric jolt races up your spine.
But he pulls away.
“No more kisses until graduation,” he says.
You had expected this, but it was worth a try. “And after graduation?”
“We’ll see,” Junmyeon says. You catch the corner of his lips curling into a smirk once more before he suppresses it.
* * *
On your way back home from your last final exam, you run into an old friend at the convenience store you always go to after school.
You almost hadn’t recognized him. The last time you’d had a good look at him had been a couple of months ago, and that hadn’t exactly been a friendly encounter.
“Chanyeol?” you call incredulously as you approach him by the beverage section of the store.
The last time you’d seen him, his dark mop of hair had been long and unruly, almost covering his eyebrows. Now it’s bleached strawberry blonde and cropped short, like a military haircut that has grown a bit longer, the undercuts fading from the crown. Chanyeol has always been handsome, but the clean hairstyle has accentuated his features even better.
“Long time no see,” he says in that deep voice that used to tie your stomach in knots. It still does, actually, but maybe not as much as before.
“Your hair… Wow.”
You can’t stop staring at him. He doesn’t quite look like the Chanyeol you knew, but at the same time, seeing him look so differently floods your brain with so many memories, and surprisingly, none of them are bad.
Perhaps it’s because he looks like a better version of himself, the version you’ve only seen in the happy memories you have of him, the version you would’ve enjoyed to get to know more back when you still loved him.
You still feel something, especially now that he’s standing right in front of you, but you’re sure that it isn’t love. It’s more of a what-if. No other term can encapsulate Chanyeol better. What if.
“Is it bad?” Chanyeol asks shyly, running his hands through his new hair. The dimple that you had always found adorable appears on his cheek as he smiles.
“No, no. It’s good. It’s very good.”
Chanyeol laughs. “That’s a relief. I thought it looked horrible on me since everyone can’t stop staring.”
“Well, it’s just that… You look so different.”
“Yup,” he says, “that was the idea. I wanted to be different. Figured I should look the part while I’m at it.” He looks down at his feet, and swallows nervously. “Listen, um… I’d like to talk about a few things, if that’s okay with you.”
You stare at him for a while, trying to gauge his expression. He looks apologetic — sad, almost — and you can tell which direction this ‘talk’ would be veering toward.
But there are still some loose ends to tie up, and you figured that this conversation is long overdue.
You nod. “Sure, Chanyeol. Let’s talk.”
The afternoon is relatively cool for an April one. The streets are filled with college students going out to eat and whatnot, filling the air with the buzz of chatter and laughter.
You and Chanyeol have taken a table outside the convenience store, a rectangular umbrella sticking out of its center and hanging over the two of you. Wisps of steam rise from the cups of coffee you’ve bought from the store. Neither one of you has drank.
The tension in the atmosphere is thick, not with resentment, but with awkwardness. It’s as if the two of you have forgotten how to talk with each other. You want to ask him, How did we end up like this? but you already know the answer to that.
Finally, when you can’t stand the silence any longer, you say, “What did you want to talk about, Yeol?”
The nickname feels strange as it rolls off your tongue, like it no longer belongs there, but you say it anyway to show Chanyeol that you no longer harbor bad feelings toward him.
You’ve forgiven him, even if he hadn’t apologized properly, because that’s the only way for you to stop hurting. And it has worked. So far, at least.
“Right,” he says. “I’ve talked to Kyungsoo and Jihyun, too. About the, um, way I’ve been acting for the past months. I’m sorry about ghosting you guys suddenly. It’s just that… I needed a lot of time to myself. To think about the shit I did. I’m sorry if it took so long for me to figure out.”
“I understand,” you answer.
Not It’s okay or It’s fine or any of that. I understand. That’s the best you can give him — your understanding. You’ve forgiven him based on that, but that doesn’t erase the pain he’s caused you.
Chanyeol continues. “I’ve apologized to Kyungsoo and Jihyun about those things, and you’re the last person I wanted to apologize to because… well, you’re the one I hurt the most.”
The cups of coffee have gone cold on the table, and so has your heart.
“I know that apologizing doesn’t cut it, but still, I’m sorry,” says Chanyeol. There’s no question about the sincerity of his tone. It’s the most genuine sentence you’ve heard from him in all the years that you’ve known him. “I’m sorry that I led you on, that I took advantage of how you felt for me, that I didn’t think my actions through when I was with you. I just want you to know that it’s not your fault. None of it is. It’s me. It’s all me. I was too afraid of my own feelings. That’s the truth.”
You stare at him, your throat beginning to tighten.
Chanyeol’s eyes are traveling everywhere except on you. You’re not sure if you’re just imagining things or if his eyes have really turned watery.
“I know that nothing’s gonna change what happened before, and I’m not even entirely sure if it’s gonna change anything now, but I’m sorry. I’m sorry for all the things I did, the things I’m doing right now that I may not even be aware of, the things I’ll do in the future. I’ll never do anything intentionally that’ll hurt you, I just fuck up sometimes. I’m pretty sure I’ll fuck up in the future, too, but I’ll try to be better. I’ll try if it’s the last thing I do. I care about you. A lot.”
The awkwardness seeps back into the air. Chanyeol picks up his coffee, which probably doesn’t taste that good anymore, and takes a small sip from it.
“I’ve forgiven you a long time ago, Yeol,” you say after a few seconds of silence. “There’s nothing else to forgive. But I appreciate your apology.”
It’s true. What’s done is done. Neither of you can do anything about the bad memories you have of each other now. All you can do is move past all that.
Chanyeol may have done a lot of hurtful things, whether intentionally or not, but it’s not his fault that he didn’t love you the way you loved him.
“I know I’m not in the position to ask for favors, but can I ask one all the same?” Chanyeol asks.
“Sure.”
“Can we be friends again?”
You smile. “I’d like that. Yeah, let’s try again as friends.”
Chanyeol’s lips curl into a smile as well, his dimple making another appearance. “Thank you. For hearing me out. And for the coffee,” he says. “See you around?”
“You can’t stay for a while?”
Chanyeol regretfully shakes his head. “I have to study for my major demo prod final.”
You can’t help but laugh. “You are different,” you say. “You never studied before.”
“Never too late to start again, right?” Chanyeol laughs. “See you around.”
You nod. Chanyeol stands up from his seat, gives you one last smile, and then disappears into the fading afternoon. Your heart feels the lightest it has been for a while, and you wonder until when this happiness will be good for this time around.
Apparently not for long.
Your phone dings, displaying an e-mail notification from the last person you’d expect it from. The message reads:
You are respectfully invited to the department chair’s office for a dialogue regarding a sensitive matter. Kindly reply promptly with the schedule that works for you.
Best,
Lee Yeong Hoon, PhD
Chair, Literature Department
* * *
Your heart feels like it’s about to burst inside your chest any minute now.
You’ve never been personally asked into the department chair’s office in all your four years in college, and the churning in your gut tells you that your first visit isn’t going to be a pleasant one.
Students only ever go to their department chair’s office for either one of two reasons: (1) to ask for recommendation letters, in which case they go willingly, or (2) they fucked up and are in trouble, in which case they’re asked to go whether they like it or not.
You definitely aren’t there to ask for recommendations, so the only other logical option is that you’re monumentally screwed. As far as you’re concerned, you haven’t done anything to warrant the department chair’s attention.
Well, there is one thing…
No, you tell yourself. That’s impossible.
How could Dr. Lee have known? How could anyone have known? You and Junmyeon have been careful enough around campus. Heck, you haven’t seen him more than once outside of campus since the night he drove you home from Esperanza. It just isn’t possible that you’re in trouble because of that.
The shrill, robotic sound of a telephone snaps you back into reality.
The department secretary immediately picks it up. “Sir? Yes, sir. Right away, sir.” She turns to you, placing the handset back on the hook. “Dr. Lee is ready for you, sweetie.”
You can’t quite place the secretary’s expression. Is it distaste? Pity? Nevertheless, you thank her, and then hesitantly make your way toward the office.
The second you open the door and see who’s in the room aside from Dr. Lee, your heart sinks right through the floor. The other man is sitting with his back facing you, but he doesn’t need to turn around for you to know who he is.
Junmyeon.
He’s already occupying one of the two chairs in front of Dr. Lee’s desk, so you naturally go for the other seat. Your entire body has gone cold.
“I suppose you already know why I asked you here this morning,” Dr. Lee says, talking to no one in particular. Neither you nor Junmyeon respond.
Dr. Lee brings out a small, dark brown envelope from one of his desk drawers. He pulls out a single sheet of glossy paper — a photo, you realize — and places it gingerly on the table, as if mishandling it will make it explode.
Junmyeon doesn’t move an inch, perhaps because Dr. Lee has already shown him the photo while you were waiting outside just a few minutes ago. You straighten in your seat, craning your neck to see what’s on the photo.
It’s a bit dark and grainy, like it was taken on a phone from a distance, but there’s no doubt that the two people in the photo are you and Junmyeon. It was taken on that night, the night you sometimes still can’t believe ever happened. There it is, the first kiss you and Junmyeon have shared, immortalized in a photo meant to destroy the both of you here and now.
“This was dropped anonymously into my pigeon hole about a week ago,” says Dr. Lee. “The only people that have seen it are the people in this room right now, and my secretary. She opens my letters, you see.” He takes the photo, puts it back in the envelope, and then returns it inside his drawer. “No one will ever see it again.”
That takes a huge chunk of weight off of your chest, but it doesn’t remove all the dread.
Despite the anxiety simmering in your stomach, you manage to say, “Thank you, sir.”
Dr. Lee simply nods. The neutrality of his features is a bit unsettling, but it’s better than him being angry. Or maybe this is how he naturally is when he’s upset? That’s even more unnerving.
“As Chair of the Literature Department, it’s my responsibility to make sure that… things like this do not spill over to the entire Liberal Arts College.” He said ‘things’ with such dismay that you know he said it not because of the lack of a better term. Dr. Lee continues, “We have to deal with this on our own. Our department cannot have any more attention toward it, especially not after the scandal last trimester with Ms. Jeon. We have to cut off this problem’s head before it bites anyone else. Do you remember your Greek mythology?” he asks you.
The sudden question causes your brows to furrow in confusion. “Sir?”
“You were my student in World Literature 1. Do you remember your Greek mythology?” Dr. Lee repeats.
“Uh, I g-guess, sir.”
“Good. You will understand my analogy, then. You see, problems are like the Hydra — cut off one head, two more take its place. How did Hercules kill it?”
The answer comes naturally to you. “He burned the stumps before they grew back.”
“Good,” Dr. Lee says, his tone void of any emotion. “We have already cut off the head by not telling anyone else, and this is how we will burn the stump of this problem so that it remains beheaded.” He leans back on his chair, folding his arms in front of him. “I have already discussed this with Mr. Kim earlier, but for your sake, we will discuss it again.”
You turn to look at Junmyeon — the first good look you’ve had of him since you entered the room. His face is as rigid as a rock, his eyebrows scrunched together. He hasn’t spared you a glance, not once, since you sat down. He hasn’t talked, either.
Dr. Lee sighs. “Given your father’s position in the university and the fact that you are merely awaiting graduation, I am inclined to grant you the utmost leniency regarding this matter. Personally, I do not care about other people’s relationships, especially if they are of legal age, but unfortunately, my personal bias is suspended when I am acting as department chair. Because of that, I have no choice but to not invite Mr. Kim to teach at the university next trimester, or in the trimesters to come.”
Did you hear him correctly?
“You’re firing him,” you sum up. Your voice doesn’t feel like it’s coming from you; it feels like it’s echoing from someplace else.
Dr. Lee leans forward, propping his elbows on the wooden table. “My dear, I am not terminating Mr. Kim’s contract. I am simply not renewing it. There is a difference.”
“Well whatever you call it, it isn’t fair, it isn’t—”
“Don’t,” Junmyeon’s stern voice cuts you off. He throws you a pointed glance, silently saying, Please stop talking right now. He’s angry; that, you are sure of. What you aren’t sure of is if his anger is directed at the whole situation or simply at you.
He has the right to be furious at you, doesn’t he? After all, all of this wouldn’t be happening if you just hadn’t let yourself get swayed by your emotions and kissed him that night.
The fault is yours alone.
“It is settled,” Dr. Lee says with such finality that it’s hard to argue.
Unfortunately, you’d never been one to know when to give up. “Dr. Lee, please. It isn’t his fault, it’s mine. Please don’t—”
“Enough,” the department chair says. His tone has gone from neutral to venomous. “The only reason I am not taking your diploma away from you is because your father is the president of this university. One more outburst like that and I will no longer hesitate to forfeit your degree.” That shuts you right up. Dr. Lee then turns to Junmyeon. “It is settled,” he repeats. “Thank you for your time in this university, Mr. Kim. I wish you good fortune in all your future endeavors.”
Junmyeon stands up from his seat and offers his hand to Dr. Lee. “Thank you, sir,” he says. After the handshake, Junmyeon walks out of the room, and all you can do is watch.
What you don’t know is that it’ll be a while before you see him again.
