@incurablescribblerâ requested:
Rajkumari Jodhaa Bai and her cousin Rajkumar Sujamal
âSujamal loved Jodhaa like a sister, he was by her side whenever she beckoned.â
Jodhaa, Jalal, and Sujamal for the 10 sentences if you havenât done them yet.
Jalal
AfterlifeA man who has faith in so many different faiths must wonder what heaven waits for him; he only hopes it has the best parts of all of them.
End of ChildhoodâMy Emperor,â pronounces Khan Baba, sinking into a bow, and the world as Jalal knows it comes to an end.
Epistolary/Social Media AUIt isnât the lack of wretched words that makes Jalal favor Snapchat; it is the assurance that for once, any mistakes he makes will vanish into thin air.
Fusion (or Fusion AU)When it comes time for him to be claimed, Jalal doesnât expect to see a holographic thunderbolt hover over his head, any more than the fact that the pretty Nike cabin counselor frowns to see it.
Fix-itKhan Baba might have left him, and Mother gone on pilgrimage, but Jalal is not entirely without resources; he unfolds the letter taken from Jodhaaâs belongings, holds it out to Raja Todar Mal, and asks, âWhat does this say?â
Future FicThe court rumbles that the Emperor ought to take another wife, but Jalal is adamant that his heir shall be born of Jodhaa or not at all; his patience is rewarded with Salim.
GenderswapJalila might only be the youngest and least important of the Emperorâs daughters, but she will be the one history remembers.
Historical Era SwapâWhy didnât anyone warn me,â Jalal complains, âjust how much of an useless idiot this Bahadur Iâm playing is meant to be?â
Role ReversalThe one fate unhappier than watching the Emperor Adham wreak havoc among his subjects is doing so as the foster brother who knows he could do a better job.
Sibling/s (or lack thereof)
âYou will not,â demands Maham Anga, âbe so cruel as to hold your milk brother any less dear than your blood siblings, will you, Jalal?â; and solemnly, he shakes his head.
Jodhaa
AfterlifeThe sweet call of the flute assures her that she has earned her Lordâs favor.
End of ChildhoodShe is petted and praised at her betrothal; but from that very day, her parents see her as a bride-to-be rather than a daughter.
Epistolary/Social Media AUâYou see, I prove myself prudent,â comments Jalal, âby combining wife and secretary in a single person.â
Fusion (or Fusion AU)When Sujamal leaves the Rangers, Jodhaa thinks sheâll never drift againâat least until she spots the new recruit in the Combat Room.
Fix-itThe Emperor, newly dubbed Akbar, is grateful for the gift of a horse but prefers to ride his wifeâs elephant so she can join him; the royal couple returns from greeting their people from the howdahâs security, unafraid and unharmed.
Future FicâJahangir,â Salim suggests shyly. âWhat do you think, Mother?â
GenderswapThe Emperor wants a warrior for his army, not a wife, and so Jaidev is sent to Agra rather than his sisters; but he is in no less danger from the kind, curious young man he finds in place of the Mughal menace.
Historical Era SwapHer family shakes their head sadly when they hear of mad Princess Meera, and Jodhaa says nothing; in the dead of night, though, she steals from her chambers to join her.
Role ReversalWomen do not speak in assemblies; but when Jodhaa hears of the injustice done Sujamal, she can remain silent no longer.
Sibling/s (or lack thereof)
One brother is lost to her, but the other remains; Jodhaa writes and bids him send her nephew to the Emperor when he is old enough to profit from his patronage.
Sujamal
AfterlifeSomehow, he knows Jodhaa still remembers him; somehow, he knows she is happy.
End of ChildhoodAs much as they love him, his aunt and uncleâs eyes are always wary when they study him.
Epistolary/Social Media AUMost unfortunately for Maham Anga, her plot to entrap Jodhaa is complicated by the fact that Sujamal has written to her earlier that week, with no mention of any mission to rescue her against her will.
Fusion (or Fusion AU)âWho the hell is Bhai-sa?â the Winter Soldier snaps, and the warrior woman before him half-sobs in response.
Fix-itNone of the Mughals are to be trusted, Sujamal reminds himself, and rejects Sharifuddinâs offer outright.
Future Fic
Their first son must be named after the saint; but their second, Jodhaa swears, shall be called Sujamal.
GenderswapJodhaa is the trueborn daughter of the house, and destined for Ajabgarh, as Sujatha is meant for the Mughal palace; but at the last minute, seeing her sisterâs silent misery, Jodhaa takes her place.
Historical Era SwapChandragupta Vikramaditya knows what it is to be betrayed by a brother, and to prevail nonetheless; for that, he has Sujamalâs undying loyalty.
Role ReversalâI come to you, O Emperor, in search of justice; and in return, I promise you my sisterâs hand in marriage.â
Sibling/s (or lack thereof)
He canât help but wish ruefully that Bharmalâs children were his siblings in truth.
Hi Ally! For the Askbox prompts, Jodha and Sujamal, delightful smiles :)
Jodhaa knew when she decided to ride away from Agra with Sujamal in the dead of night that she was giving up her existence as a princess and empress in exchange for a lifetime of living like a vagabond. She knew that all the opulence of the palace could not make up for the uncertainty of living in a court ruled by a man who orders his own brother dead, but she is still embarrassed to realize how much she misses inconsequential luxuries such as her sambrani. It has been months since she had any maidservants to style her hair, and how it is limp and dull from only the occasional wash, with no hands to waft sweet-smelling smoke into its length.
Bhai-sa enters the room they share in this rundown inn, their packs hefted over his arm, and crooks an eyebrow. Ready to leave?Â
Jodhaa nods and stands up from the bed, drawing her veil over her tangled tresses and the lower half of her face. Beneath it, she hides a smile at her own foolishness. She has given up royalty for poverty, but there is a certain thrill to living and dying by the sword, on the road, to knowing that her fate is in her own hands.
Jodhaa: I love all my brothers equally! Sujamal and *looks at smudged writing* Bhuvan Dayal.
If I am a good student, it is only thanks to a good teacher like you.Â
Mentor relationships in Jodhaa Akbar (2008)
Thereâs a deleted Jodhaa Akbar scene where Sujamal and his Rajput allies are talking after the Agra misunderstanding. Heâs hurt by Jodhaaâs supposed betrayal but confused as to Jalal not making her convert and building a temple.
Ratan Singh (Jodhaaâs old betrothed) says he canât believe Jodhaa is happy there, she is not a true Kshatriya woman/Rajput, and she should have swallowed poison instead. And I just love that even though Sujamal is reeling from her âbetrayalâ he is outraged to the point that he slams Ratan Singh into a wall and ends up costing himself an ally.
