Unpopular opinion: TSITP is not an IT girl.

Hear me out. Conrad, Jeremiah and Belly are all troubled individuals and in more than one way toxic for each other. If brothers fighting for and dating the same girl is not enough to give you the ick, maybe the fact that the girl goes back and forth between the two is.

Yes, there have been shows before with similar tropes but there has always been a resolution. For three whole seasons, this show has revolved around the to and fro of the love triangle.

In the new season, we see that Belly is engaged to Jeremiah. Why is it okay that Belly uses Jeremiah to stabilise her concept of self-worth just until Conrad comes into the picture? If Conrad really is Belly's moon, isn't it only appropriate for her to step back and figure it out, and not agree to quite literally marry his brother for vibes?

Most importantly, why are people so upset with the concept of Belly choosing herself?

Let's be honest. Just because you love somebody, doesn't make it so that you automatically deserve them or the other way around. Conrad's character seems to be doing better, yes, but that is because he took time away from a relationship and worked on himself. So why is it wrong for Belly to do the same? Is it not exactly what she should do? Belly seems to be in no shape for a relationship. Her self-esteem and identity as a whole have been revolving around relationships alone for quite some time now. Why is it not okay for her to explore what life has to offer, away from the drama, and grow into a better person? Are we forgetting that the same Belly who broke up with Conrad over his emotional unavailability, tied to grieving his mother's death, agreed to marry Jeremiah, who cheated on her twice and is the definition of a man-child nearly all the time?

The writing and plot structure in itself are flawed and lazy at times. Some believe that Jeremiah's character was crafted a particular way to merely push the idea of Conrad as the better brother and thus, the better suitor for Belly. This warrants a separate discussion altogether.

Now, by no means am I suggesting that characters have to be perfect and without flaws. Their mistakes are what better connect them to the audience and make them human. But that can exist in parallel with a distinction between right and wrong, yes? Actions cannot be excused because the character is flawed, as the "flaw" is not something to always be glorified. Portraying accountability as a negotiable concept is rather cowardly. Steven and Taylor's intimate moments are portrayed as romantic and desirable while they are actually cheating on their respective partners. The same happens when Belly and Conrad spend time together and it seems a tad bit disgusting, considering that she is engaged to his brother, regardless of whether they are soulmates or not.

You can enjoy a show while also not turning a blind eye to the characters' shitty behaviour and lack of decent decision making skills. Using "She's just a girl" to defend toxic behaviour and mask the lack of accountability infantilises women. Which goes against everything we as a community have been trying to achieve.

But hey, of course, it's just a show. It's not that deep. There, saved you some time.

Team Conrad?

Is it even a coincidence Conrad and Belly are together in the Winter? Their relationship is colder, icy, and never feels like it's on solid ground like it could break any second just like ice water cracking. Sure Conrad and Belly have a softer more gentle connection and it is pretty cute. Buuuut Belly blew any chance with Conrad the moment she chose his brother in season 1. And Conrad blew his chance pretty fast too TWICE. And AGAIN Belly blew any chance with Conrad by reentering a full blown relationship with Jer. Instead she could have just played the friend card a bit patiently?

Team Jeremiah?

Logically, whoever enters a relationship first with Belly is end game. To flip flop so much is MESSED UP and it ruins their family. And at least in the show that is technically Jeremiah. Chemistry wise, sorry Lola and Gavin's chemistry is also wayyy cuter and believable. Their characters are more similar in that they are both outgoing, kind, funny, and very messy teenagers. Their relationship even EMBODIES summer - adventurous, spontaneous, joyful, and playful.

Season 1 & 2: My unpopular opinion is that the brothers should have prioritized their relationship with each other over their relationship with Belly. Especially for their mom. Belly getting rejected romantically by both brothers or even her rejecting both brothers at the end of either season would have been a solid twist. Instead Belly has ended up both season finales with a brother. Season 3 (So far): But if the show wanted to officially end things with Jer the cheating storyline would have been the perfect route. But AGAIN they instead end up engaged LOL. Elopement? I'm #TeamJellyBelly. Plus they are both the problem child while Connie and Steven are the more square perfect child. At this point it just makes sense for them to stick together and prove everyone wrong.

I get it, it could all be building up to this predictable frankly unimaginative climactic scene where Jer continues to be unfairly labeled the "irresponsible brother" and Conrad continues to be the "Golden boy." But first, so boring. Second, does Belly really get to walk away scotch free and blameless? After she has flirted with both brothers throughout this show. If she ends up with Conrad, Belly is officially the REAL VILLAIN that effectively has ruined both Beck's sons lives. With no redemption for her character. THAT WOULD BE A WILD ENDING. Not even Bella did all that in Twilight. 😂😭
