The small sub-shrub Salvia 'Blue Spire' (Russian sage, perovskia) makes a great informal hedge or edging to a path. Here it formed a good association with the large herbaceous perennial Cynara cardunculus (cardoon) with both plants liking a sunny location.

In this sunny border the drought tolerant Eryngium planum 'Blue Glitter' (sea holly) was thriving. The plants were producing cone-shaped clusters of small, blue flowers surrounded by pointed, silver-blue bracts. To prolong the life of this perennial it is best to avoid heavy, wet soils in the winter.

Running through this bed at Great Dixter, Sussex, was Papaver dubium subsp. lecoqii 'Albiflorum' (Beth's poppy) that was just starting to flower. This delicate poppy is an annual that will self-sow in a sunny, well drained site.

Growing best is the full sun, Argyrocytisus battandieri (Moroccan broom, pineapple broom) is a deciduous shrub with trifoliate silvery-grey leaves which covered in silky hairs when young. The clusters of yellow flowers fill the air with the aroma of ripe pineapple and are popular with pollinating insects. This shrub certainly adds an exotic feel to a garden in the summer.

In this sunny border at Helmingham Hall, Suffolk, UK, the rhizomatous perennial Iris 'Sable' (bearded iris) was starting to flower. The plants have fans of sword-shaped leaves and fragrant flowers with deep purple standards, very dark purple falls, and orange-tipped, purple beards. One clump of plants was by a very large snail, thankfully it was a topiary Taxus baccata (yew).
