okay so I went to look for Vanitas screenshots (biased choice) and I need to show off this screenshot of kh3 that's on the literal wiki

it's so unreasonably funny. all these nort-ass motherfuckers and then this short gay kid looking annoyed from behind his motorcycle helmet. it looks like Vanitas is so misbehaved he needs four chaperones to the field trip he's on. he's so short. his body language is completely tilted while everyone else is so calm. this is so fucking funny

yk what? fuck it. I was gonna do the scene where he's watching over Ventus sleep but this is too funny, I gotta art study this

okay so I don't know what to even describe this art style as, like?? on one hand it's our art journal style, which is basically faux one-line. you don't ACTUALLY need to restrain yourself to one line, but you should be jittery and double-backy enough that it looks like it. also no serious erasing. ideally this is done in irreversible ink, but we can do it digitally just by being honest with ourselves about only erasing if something is genuinely hurting the piece

tbh this puts the STUDY in art study cause I put the focus on Van (angry gay boy) and let the dark background do a lot of shading, but like... damn, what IS the art direction on the original scene? like sure this is one screenshot from a moving cutscene so maybe not fair to analyze it as a still frame but also it feels so flat... no serious character interests... but also four of these guys are the same guy so I guess that's expected

I bet Vanitas is like. the most indirect kind of supportive to the people he cares about. he can't LET THEM know he cares. so it's all fueled by rage

he gets pissed on Sora's behalf so that he understands that someone will be angry for him, even when Sora thinks he isn't allowed to be upset. he'll be honest to the point of cruelty in hopes that he can validate the fears that Sora won't say out loud. but every time Sora thanks him, Vanitas just insists it's because he's so angry he can't resist

with Roxas they are angry in tandem, furious at the world that'd bring them into existence and then treat them the way they have. the world is so cruel to boys so artificial and if they were so forcibly brought into this world, don't they deserve some kindness for once? it's easier for Vanitas because Roxas understands, intuitively, what his support looks like. he dares not get mushy - he knows sparring to blow off steam is thanks enough

but sometimes anger is too ancient and close to home. sometimes he stands with Ventus and he doesn't really know what to do with his hands. Ven wants to talk but Vanitas still isn't great at listening, so he sits on the floor legs crossed like a child and Ven hands him stim toys and art supplies and cardboard that he can tear into shreds with his hands because Ven knows that Vanitas's feelings are too big for his body and he could use some help figuring out what to do with them

I'm underleveled as fuck cause we did hollow bastion ep 2 before lion world, but hold out war of attrition against the fight wondering the whole time what's gonne happen

fight stops, he leaves, and Sora KNOWS IT'S RIKU!!! LIKE OF COURSE HE KNOIWS IT'S RIKU CAUSE HE SAW HIS SWORD AND THE OVERHAND GUARD HE USES BUT HE DOESN'T GET IT. HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING

THEN EVERYONE ARRIVES TO ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED AND HE DOESN'T EVEN SAY HE KNOWS IT'S RIKU

LIKE HE JUST- HE PROBABLY THINKS THEY WON'T BELIEVE HIM AND THEY'LL BULLY HIM FOR BEING HOPEFUL WHEN OBVIOUSLY THAT ISN'T RIKU, OR THEY'LL ALL GET MAD AT RIKU THINKING HE'S PART OF THE ORGANIZATION AND TRY TO HUNT HIM DOWN, POOR SORA MISSES HIS BEST FRIEND AND HE'S SO SCARED HE JUST GOES QUIET ADN HE SAYS NOTHING ABOUT IT
