I read some of your Ardyn fics and I really like your writing style, there's a fluidity to it that draws me in. Do you have any advice for writing that way? I'm trying to lean away from repetitive sentence structures in my fics and reusing common words/phrases. I'm not sure how to train my mind into better writing. Also, what is up with the Tentacle Trope that everybody uses for Daemon Ardyn? I don't get it at all. Am I missing something?
Oh my goodness! Thank you for taking the time to read some of my works! And I am honored that you like my writing style!🥰 Because I honestly question it a lot. I will do my best to provide helpful advice.
I think the biggest tool I use that helps diversify my descriptions/words is the online thesaurus. When I am writing I have that pulled up and it is used frequently. Many of these are reblogged on my profile under writing references or writing resource.
The second tab is a collection of writing resources I have copied and pasted from tumblr: descriptors, tone of voice, words replacing said.
Books that help me are, The emotional thesaurus, the emotional wound thesaurus, Thinking like a Romance Writer.
And often when I am not pleased with how things are sounding, I take a break (however long) and read other works from authors I enjoy. Gaining insight and inspiration from their writing style. That is really how I think I came to my writing style...which still seems fluid to me lol
As for tentacles and demon Ardyn, it really became big early 2017 when some fantastic fic authors went that route with him. Inspiration could've been from the tentacle demons, the scourges versatility or just adding tenta to the fandom with the character most apt for it.
For me, writing tentacles is a intriguing exercise on what could be possible. Having more than to arms to work with is fun 😉 but I think my next tentacle fic will be more of a subspecies exploration with octomer.
Thank you for making me feel seen today!
