For Lucas, moments like this were the reason he never wanted to leave your side. You laid with your back flat on your bed, with your eyes closed trying to regulate your breathing. Lucas sat to your right, looking down at your exhausted figure, rubbing your stomach to soothe your pain. He wasn’t sure if his efforts were working but you seemed to be more relaxed than when he first entered your apartment. About an hour ago, Lucas found you crouched next to your couch whimpering because of how painful your period cramps have been that week. Being no stranger to how difficult this can be, he never knew yours could get this unbearable.
“I’ve had periods for over a decade, and now my body decides it wants to kill me,” you groan, trying to make sense of your biology. Your doctor told you it was normal for some people to not experience such harsh period symptoms, and you were happy you were one of those people. Your doctor didn’t mention that there could be a sudden disturbance to the natural balance of things at any moment. Yours happened to be now.
“You’ll get through this,” Lucas whispered, pretty concerned about his girlfriends state. To Lucas, this is the worst thing that could happen to you, besides death, and his reasoning for that is his inability to know whether or not he is helpful. So, until you tell him otherwise, he plans to talk softly, get you any medication you need and rub your belly until it’s raw. He takes a breath, lifts your top up a bit then lowers to kiss above your bellybutton. “You always say day two is the worst, so maybe this will be over tomorrow.”
The corners of your mouth lift in satisfaction at the feeling of his lips on your body, and his comforting words that follow. It distracted you enough to forget about how uncomfortable the pain was, but also got you thinking about how attentive Lucas was.
Your relationship with Lucas wasn’t easy with his work schedule, but it also wasn’t hard. Lucas mentioned a book he read on the plane back from Shanghai that referenced love languages, and how they can be useful for your relationship. You took the quiz in separate rooms and came back to see what you came up with. Yours was Quality Time, and his was Words of Affirmation. Him being there for you is something you know he would do regardless of his new found knowledge, but it came in larger gestures once he knew that’s what communicated how in love he is with you. Thinking about that made you want to show him how much you loved him too.
Just as you were going to speak, a wave of pain surged through your abdomen in ways you could not fathom. At its peak, you felt a tear escape your right eye. You began to lift to hand to wipe the tear away, but Lucas already beat you to it. You opened your eye for the first time since Lucas carried you to your bed, seeing how distressed this made him. Although you were hurting physically, it was obvious that you weren’t the only one feeling hurt in general. The pain subsided and so did your rugged breathing.
“I don’t get why periods are a thing. The human race should pack it up and send it back for redesign,” Lucas whispered, causing you to genuinely smile and giggle just a bit. It made him feel like he was actually making your experience less miserable.
“I think so too,” you said. “Thank you for being here with me, Xuxi. You give great massages.”
His smile grows a thousand times wider, and his right hand never stops massaging your stomach. His left hand resting on the side of your face, with his thumb stroking the top of your cheek. “Your welcome,” he said before pecking your lips, lifting up an inch to stare deep into your eyes before deciding to kiss you again.
