and here I thought the shotguns were the worst
SuperHot MCD is a really really good game and on first inspection it doesn't seem like it's gonna be that long, there's less than 20 "levels" total and the format of these levels does not change. You have to beat a certain number of rooms without dying, that's it. The challenge is that you have to:
Do increasing numbers of rooms between upgrades (You pick 1 of 2 random upgrades, one of which is the only way to heal.)
Survive every room for that level having landmines, or armored enemies
Survive an increasing number of enemies being close enough to touch you the instant you start
Survive unkillable demons that chase you, throw swords at you, and forcibly swap bodies with you to put you in danger
All of these things independently is somewhat manageable but when they start being combined on the 8_ levels it's insane. Congratulations bitchboy you've entered a room where 3 men with guns and knives are already swinging at you and there's no weapons nearby to grab or throw. DodgeThis.mp4. Nice work, you killed them! Rest of level proceeds as normal! PSYCH, we have summoned the Immortal Tatsu to take your fucking head off. Ok you killed the rest of the enemies and ended the level. You did get hit though. And there's two more levels before even the possibility of a heal. Fantastic. Next level, I'm sure it'll be fine. Btw are you familiar with landmines? We are also releasing the hounds on you. Just to be sure. :D
Scenes I built in 2016 and 2020 respectively, based on SUPERHOT and SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE. I always loved the clean black/white/red aesthetic.
So, I've been playing a game called Superhot: Mind Control Delete. It's a good game. If you're not familiar with the franchise, it's a puzzle game with a shooter skin. Time only moves when you do, so you're basically playing Neo in God Mode. Game play is great.
The story tho....I'm going to be honest I find it pretentious and condensending. The game was given out for free to anyone who had purchased Superhot, which I had. Didn't even know the thing was coming out.
Spoilers:
The game basically talks down to you for playing it the entire time. The narrative is that you are an addict who can't stop playing the game, and that playing the game is Bad.
They gave me the goddamn thing for free. They're selling it for $30ish. Why make a game, and profit off of the game and condensed your players for getting hooked on your purposefully engaging game play loop.
I didn't even ask for the damn thing. It showed up in my library one day.
I still like playing it because, like I said, it's a good game play loop. I love the slow methodical game play paired with a shooter. I love the rougelike upgrades, and how they bulid on the first game's concept. It's also really immersive. I feel like fucking Neo when I play. It's great.
But I also don't like to be criticized for playing a game that, as I stated before, they gave me and I didn't ask for.
Yeah the first game had elements of this in it's story, but they were at least a little more subtle. There is 0 subtlety here. It is in your face "GAMING ADDICTION BAD".
It's just...a little in your face and not as artistic as they were going for.
But it's fun, I'll give it that.
SUPER. HOT. SUPER. HOT.
