I work in a bookstore and I can’t tell you how many times a customer has come up to me to ask why they would buy a book in the store when it’s so much cheaper online. I can never respond the way I want to respond, which would be to tell them this...
Shop at bookstores because you believe bookstores are an important, nice thing to have in your communities. Bookstores provide an gathering place for readings, events, field trips, and just generally a place for people to leave their homes and come together with their neighbors.
Shop at bookstores because you believe people should be paid fair wages. Online prices are cheap because they do not provide a living wage for the many hands that go into producing and selling the books you love, from people like me- your friendly neighborhood bookseller, to the editors, agents, and publishers, all the way up to the authors themselves.
But for the people who come into my place of work and insist my job is irrelevant, you can stay home.
