Stephanie Kuehn holds degrees in linguistics and sport psychology, as well as a postdoctoral fellow in clinical psychology, which truly shows in her novels’ raw depiction of life’s harsh realities and the traumas and hidden desires that lurk within her characters.

Her newest novel, When I Am Through With You is a psychological thriller told from the perspective of 17- year - old Ben who confesses with an unsettling lack of remorse to killing his beloved girlfriend, Rose, while on a school orienteering trip into the wilderness. Ben’s narration is as sharp as the mountain peak that he and his classmates climb, and each sentence festers with skillful suspense as Ben describes the intense events on their hiking trip that led to murder. I was surprised by how well the sinister storytelling contrasts with stunning descriptions of nature! These teen’s desire to lose themselves in the wilderness leads down a dark trail of questionable decisions, loose fugitives, and buried secrets. You won’t be able to resist going down with them!

It’s funny because millennials can pretty much multitask like it’s second nature simply because it’s necessary to keep up with society, while baby boomers whine about reading subtitles and can’t seem to program anything more complicated than a VCR.

But sure, ok, the kids are lazy and have entitlement complexes

Eerie Harry Potter concept art brings the darkness back to the series

These somber illustrations, while visually stunning, also capture the most important part of the Harry Potter saga. While the movies certainly attempted to grasp the darkness of the stories, many scenes and details were lightened, presumably to retain a PG-13 rating for younger audiences. But these sketches bring back the sinister, macabre imagery of the books, and in doing so, highlight the best part of the series — forcing readers to grapple with serious, real-world moral and political issues in the context of the fantastic.

Loved this post! Just a little reminder that books with dark themes and content can help us grapple with real- world issues and concepts in a way that encourages resilience, and often shows a path through the darkness. You might be wondering why dystopian/ dark fantasy YA books have become so popular, and shouldn’t young people be reading something more happy? Shouldn’t books allow us to escape from the heavy things that may be bothering us?

Well, of course there are other books out there! If you don’t want to read these genres, we certainly won’t force you! We can recommend a myriad of books that are not as, shall we say, intense- but one reason why they have become so popular is that they give us hope by plunging us into a world that may seem dark at times. Through these stories, we might see similarities to our own world, and characters whom we can identify with, empathize with, and be inspired by. There are so many different stories being told about people from diverse backgrounds who endure difficult situations, suffering, and harsh realities like loss, mental illness, discrimination, and violence. Yet, there’s much more to life than darkness. I read so that I can practice my own resilience while learning to better understand those around me. I read to find the light.
