What are your favourite moments of Sam supporting Dean?

Whether he is just offering silent solidarity or actively and vocally supporting his brother, Sam is always doing his best to be there. (Except when he gets an angel shoved into him and Will Not Tolerate Excuses which is actually A++ honestly because at that point he needed literal truckloads of support himself and the show never gave it to us *sob* and I’m still sad about that.)

But If I had to choose a few favorites of Sam being an awesome brother….

2.22, “All Hell Breaks Loose, Part II” - “And what do you think my job is? You’ve saved my life over and over. I mean, you sacrifice everything for me. Don’t you think I’d do the same for you? You’re my big brother. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you. And I don’t care what it takes, I’m gonna get you out of this. Guess I gotta save your ass for a change.”

Every single heartbreaking moment of season 3, but especially the exchange in 3.15, “Time Is on My Side” - There’s beauty in Sam spending every moment driving himself into the ground desperately seeking a solution for Dean’s demon deal, but the biggest and most amazing feat of self-sacrificial support came in 3.15, where Sam found a workable solution to Dean’s deal and Dean said no. Sam respected Dean’s decision, even if that meant he lost his brother. That is support. That is the kind of support I don’t even have words for. It’s beyond me.

All of season 10, but this moment in 10.10 shines through for me: “So, I’ve been thinking, look. Cain still has the Mark right? And he’s lived with it, for years he’s lived with it. So yeah, the Mark is strong, but Dean maybe there’s a part of you that wants to give into it, and maybe you have to fight that, you know? Maybe part of that powerful force has to be you.” Dean was losing hope, drowning in what the Mark was doing to him, and at that point, he desperately needed a reminder that he (with Sam’s help) could still face the Mark and fight it. He was not a passive recipient of its effects. He could actively oppose it.

This exchange in 11.13, when Dean finally broke down and admitted his connection to Amara when the danger it put both of them in could no longer be hidden: 

Sam: Why not?

Dean: Why? Because if she is that means that I’m…

Sam: Means you’re what? Complicit? Weak? Evil?

Dean: For starters, yeah

Sam: Dean. Do you honestly think you ever had a choice in the matter? She’s the sister of God, and for some reason she picked you and that sucks, but if you think I’m gonna blame you or judge you…I’m not.

There are so many (I mean Sam very awkwardly tried to support Dean this season by getting him all the things he likes and reading strip club reviews to find one Dean would enjoy), but the ones above are some of my favorites!

Over the years, Dean, Sam, and Cas had probably eaten their way through every diner in the Midwest. And Dean was constantly flirted with by various waitresses they met along the way. But one day, when a handsome waiter flirts with Castiel, Dean is forced to confront his own feelings. Featuring: Dean’s deep-seated self-worth issues, a whole lotta metaphors, almond milk bashing (Dean), and an unsurprising defense of almond milk (Sam).

Nothing brings people together more than the act of sharing a meal, and Sam, Dean, and Cas have spent a lot of time in diners and restaurants during their travels across the United States. They meet many kinds of people and maybe even flirt with waitresses a little. But, when a waiter flirts with Cas, Dean has to confront his feelings about his angel.

I don’t know about you, but I love a good Led Zeppelin reference (or twelve) in my Supernatural fic. For this fic, there is one right there in the title. I know a writer understands Dean when they include his love of the band. This author definitely understands Dean: his self-worth issues, his denial of his feelings for Cas, his tendency to worry about those he loves. They also write Sam, the long suffering brother, and Cas, the weird but sweet angel, very well. 

The handsome waiter, James, who flirts with Cas is a fun original character. He decides, pretty much right away, that he has to mess with Dean. Cas is more than happy to play along. The dialogue between him and Cas made me laugh out loud. The author had a lot of fun writing those interactions and it shows.

This is a cute, funny, and short n’ sweet fic. Perfect for an afternoon pick me up that hits just like a good cup of coffee and tasty meal.

Dean Winchester and Castiel are not dating. They’re really not. They just get hungry sometimes - who doesn’t work up an appetite during a hunt? And when they’re both hungry, it’s only reasonable to make a stop. But that’s all it ever is - just a stop on the road, nothing more. Until one evening, when everything seems to shift; they’re booked in to have dinner at a fancy restaurant together, Dean finds out that Sam’s assumed they’re dating the whole time, and Castiel is walking around shirtless. After a night like that, nothing could ever be the same.

Anything written by this author belongs on all our favorite lists, and Don’t Ever Change is mine. Before discovering this fic, I didn’t even know I was a fan of the didn’t know they were dating trope, and if you’re unsure (or if you’re very sure), then this is the perfect fic for you. 

This fic is a glimpse at Dean and Cas who are both pining heavily for each other, their time together spent like a couple might, so much so that when Dean mentions that he and Cas are about to go off for a fancy dinner, Sam doesn’t bat an eye. It throws Dean for a loop, along with a series of events that include Cas with an incredible display of tattoos that are always covered by layers of clothes (art included!). A lot is packed into less than 5k, each word and interaction between Dean and Cas making the payoff at the end that much sweeter.

Project Beyonce: The Unmaking of Dean Winchester in Ten Easy Steps

Project Beyonce: The Unmaking of Dean Winchester in Ten Easy Steps by MittenWraith (@mittensmorgul) Rating: Mature Word count: 37k

Dean Winchester inherited his father’s garage (and their family home, and his 14-year-old genius of a brother) shortly after his eighteenth birthday. Their Uncle Bobby comes down to help Dean learn how to run the business, and Sam convinces his brother to take some classes so he’ll be equipped to expand the mom and pop garage into the classic restoration shop he’s dreamed about for years. Now five years later, a little foray onto the internet to promote his shop leads Dean to a very interesting corner of Tumblr, and a mysterious online friend who only knows Dean as his #Fiance Anon. What happens after more than a year of increasingly fond anonymous correspondence?

This is one of my all time favorite AUs because of the author’s fun and familiar incorporation of Tumblr and their brilliant characterizations of everyone and the incredibly witty banter that had me giggling throughout their story. We vividly see Dean’s and Cas’ characteristic self-doubt from Dean’s point of view that has them pining anonymously on Tumblr for a year and correspondingly tugs at our heartstrings and wish that we could lock them in a room together. I really enjoyed reading Sam’s big brain at work, and although he is a bit too prying, it was amusing and sometimes comical how he enlists their found family on a project to bring personal happiness to his older brother by sussing out Dean’s anonymous crush. The interactions between Dean’s found family are playful and thoroughly help to flesh out the story while offering us some comic relief amidst the mutual pining. Readers will adore the Cas and Charlie dynamic, as well. I also love the immediate profound bond Dean and Cas felt for each other even though they didn’t meet in person. It’s through these anonymous Tumblr communications that give them a safe environment to be more revealing about themselves to each other than to the people in their own lives.

The author’s style of writing is always so comforting and leaves me in a state of joy by the last chapter. Even though Project Beyonce is filled with fluff and humor, this story is also about Dean and Cas saving each other from a life that isn’t quite fulfilled and believing they are worthy and deserve happiness, especially with each other. Readers will definitely be invested in our boys’ journey, and luckily for us, the author has created this into a Tumblr Anonymous series with more stories and timestamps, so you will surely become very attached and fall in love with this Dean and Cas!

Dean starts falling in love with him on a slow Sunday morning under slanted sunlight that slips through the gaps in the trees. ~~~ "When did it stick for you? When did your six hundred Sundays start?" Dean asks. "It never started," Castiel admits. "It simply never stopped. My love for you is eternal—existing forever, without a beginning or an end." Visually, Castiel's love is a circle. Aurally, it's an echo. Kinesthetically, it's breathing. Overall, it is not fate, and it is not chance; it is choice. He would not choose differently if he could go back and do it again, and that's why he didn't choose differently from the start.

Castiel returns from the Empty after Chuck is defeated and everything is perfect. Or as perfect as he thinks they can be. He has his family, the world is safe, and Dean is still talking to him after his big confession. Castiel's feelings don't have to be a secret anymore, even if they are not reciprocated.

Except... except Castiel thinks Dean's feelings may be changing. He thinks Dean might be falling in love with him. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking. After all, now that the world is not ending every other Thursday, and the Winchesters can take it slow, there's no reason for Dean not to build Castiel a gazebo.

For four Sundays, Dean works on it, and for four Sundays Castiel watches him, but there are a lot of stuff still left unsaid between them. In this beautiful story, Castiel and Dean get the closure they need, and Dean Winchester finally uses his words like a normal-ish human being.
