Every so often I take out my Hidden-Princess-in-a-Tower!fem!Naru AU and rotate it

Bc like, instead of Naru being at the orphanage and then put in an apartment to fend for herself, she's hidden away, placed in a room in the Hokage tower that is only accessed from the Hokage's office, where she lives on her own

To start she has a nanny, sealed into secrecy a la root (but not root), but then when she's four the Sandaime removes her (bc she wanted to leave, and, well, this is the Sandaime we're talking about) and Naru is lonelier, since the Sandaime visits her only rarely (he is busy - he forgets), and so she has to make do with books and her imagination (and the voice she sometimes hears in her head, that grows stronger, that RAGES at being caged)

(Be thankful that food can always be found in her kitchen, some sealing bullshit I wager)

And then when she's old enough to join the academy, she remains, bc the Sandaime fears that people would see her face (she looks too much like her parents) and the fragile peace Konoha has been able to forge, where they can remember the Yondaime fondly but forget, for a while, how it ended, would END

And while he loves her (he doesn't, but he fools himself), he loves the village more, so she stays locked up

But he can't have her weak, so he supplements her books with new books on ninja arts and, once in a while when he remembers too, he coaches her himself

He debates on getting a new person involved, someone who could teach her more regularly, keep better tabs on her progress, but never goes for it, always too fearful

The time comes that her age group graduates, and she remains locked up, it would be too strange for everyone if she's set free now, he thinks. Better to keep her close

And then the chunin exam happens. The invasion happens. And the Sandaime dies - but Naru remains locked and, now, no one knows

(Jiraiya knew that she'd been locked up at first. He just assumed she was released, as they'd planned, to enter the academy. And, well, he tries his hardest never to think of her anyway. It hurts too much)

And either we could have a Kakashi situation who actually goes for the Hokage seat so that he can find out what happened to his sensei's child

OR newly minted chunin Shikamaru, who is roped into being Tsunade's assistant/secretary after the Sasuke retrieval left him more injured than in canon, so that he has to rehab a bunch to get back into the field, finds whatever mechanism is used to access Naru's rooms

Fascinated by what the akatsuki would be up to if they fully thought the nine tails was actually dead bc of Minato. Or do they know and are just like oh the jailer is hidden.

And holy shit???

Without Naruto how the hell is Tsunade coming back?

Her ass didn’t do it for Jiraiya that’s for sure.

So maybe kakashi rly does have to do this. Or maybe she comes back bc Jiraiya is like “I can’t fucking find her” in the aftermath of the hokages death and she can’t force herself to leave him to that grief alone

So Kakashi is tearing shit up looking.

Shika finds the mechanism in the office.

the other walls are sealed for privacy. The area used to get to her? Not so much. That’s sealed so no sound gets out.

Maybe she has favorites based on their reports. She doesn’t have friends but she has that at least.

it means a lot to me that rob refuses to "believe" that jez and mark love one another while jez repeatedly professes in canon that he loves mark, and david is convinced mark and jez are IN love with one another while mark refuses to acknowledge any attachment towards jeremy whatsoever.

Must really be weird for Lava Lamp: he faces a sosie of his mother when she was little and now face a chibi version of his (probably) uncle (Toya and Sakura are siblings in every universe, i refuse to imagine that they're not) XD

You'd definitely think so!

And I definitely agree - Touya and Sakura would 100% be siblings in every universe that they both exist. (Though there seem to be a couple of examples so far where only one or the other exists, like Hanshin, and, uh, when one of them gets cloned I guess)
