I can’t say I’m surprised, since I was expecting this to happen. I suppose they thought it fitting to end the Skywalker saga with a conclusion parallel to the original and prequel trilogies, which I guess is like closing the loop. I’m only marginally upset because a tiny part of me hoped for a truly cheesy, all-out traditional Disney princess sort of ending, but I find a bittersweet ending much more appropriate for Star Wars. I mean, Adam Driver does have a thing for playing tragic characters.
Either way, I like to think that even if Ben and Rey are seemingly separated by life and death, Ben will always be with her. Like, for instance....
Rey is alone at home, preparing her evening meal, when she feels a familiar presence behind her. She turns, and sees the force ghost of her other half, her soulmate and one true love, shimmering a pale, translucent blue in the hot desert air.
“Hello,” Ben says, the side of his mouth curled into the lopsided smile she loves so dearly.
“Hi,” she says, smiling.
She reaches out for him, and she feels the force bend around her skin, as though his own fingers have reached out to hers through the veil of death.
No one is ever truly gone.
