Target- Finale
This is the Final Part to my Sweet x Reader Series Target. It has been quite a journey but it is over now and that is okay. For more of my writing, check out my Masterlist here.
It was at 4 a.m. the following morning that the FBI was able to successfully bring in Pilaski. Booth received the news shortly after and was torn between going to interrogate him and staying there with Sweets. But he knew that they had enough evidence to put him away and he trusted his team at the Bureau. This was a win that he desperately needed. Sweets was supposed to be released from the hospital come morning, they just wanted to keep him overnight for observation as head injuries are taking very seriously. You had made it out of your first round of surgeries and into the ICU where Hodgins and Angela sat with you. But apparently there had been complications in the middle of the night and you had to go back into surgery. Everyone was starting to get even more worried. Brennan had to go home to take care of Christine and would be back later.
Booth looked over at Sweets, who was peacefully sleeping. Sweets was like the brother he never wanted, but was glad he had. He was a good kid, with a big heart. He prayed to God that you would be okay. He knew that if you weren’t, Sweets would never forgive himself. Over the years, you and Sweets had become each other's family. Sweets had revealed to Booth a while ago that he had started to develop feelings for you. Booth smiled as he thought of how the kid would get so nervous around you. The two of you were perfect for each other. It was one of those situations where everyone else could see it, but the two of you were oblivious. It kinda reminded him of the beginning of his relationship with Bones.
It wasn’t until 9 am that Booth was awoken again when the nurse came in to start the process of checking Sweets out. Sweets asked her for an update on your condition. She informed him of all that had happened since he had fallen asleep the previous night. You were now in recovery, but due to the complications and blood loss the doctors were not sure if you would wake up. He felt a pain in his chest, he had hoped that you would be checking out with him. “Can we see her?” he asked. The nurse had agreed to take him once he was checked out. Booth had went to inform the others of the latest updates and check in on Pilaski’s status.
Sweets rushed through his paperwork and was finally being escorted to your room on the other side of the hospital. He didn’t know what to expect as he was led down the halls to your room. He was preparing himself for the worse. He knew that you had been through multiple surgeries and that you had pulled him out of the burning car. You had saved his life.
It felt like time stood still as he reached your door. Schrodinger’s cat came to mind. Until he opened the door you were as much alive as dead. He could convince himself that everything would be fine. But if he opened it reality would take over and there was a chance that it would be worse than the scenarios that were running through his head.
He took a deep breath and pushed the door open. He was relieved to see that you were still you. There was a bandage on your arm and a cannula helping you to breath, but you looked as if you were only sleeping. He was so relieved. He took a seat next to you and took your hand in his. He sat there just working up the courage to say something. He knew that if you could see him you would spout off that this was like a movie perfect opportunity.
“There are psychologists that believe that you can hear and understand everything that I am saying right now. Others believe that it is not about what I am saying but the familiarity of my voice that will allure you to wake up. Some say that it is a pointless endeavor, but I don’t believe that because there are too many people who wake up and are able to recall conversations that were had when they were unconscious and I refuse to believe that is purely coincidence. But I am getting off point, whether you can hear me right now or not there is something that I need to say to you. First of all, I just wanted to let you know that they caught Pilaski. It’s over, he is behind bars. Secondly, I want to apologize. This is all my fault. We should have stayed at the bureau where you were safe. I should have never taken you home with me, I just didn’t think it through. I’m so sorry, Y/n.” he said pausing to look up at your face, so peaceful. This is when the idea of you not waking up hit him. The possibility that you would never smile at him again. That he would never hear your laugh.
“You have to wake up Y/n. We need you. I need you. I love you so much and I can’t bare the thought of losing you. I’ve already lost my family, I can’t lose you too.” he pleaded softly.
If this were a movie, that is when you would’ve woke up and professed your love for him and then the two of you would have lived happily ever after. But this is not a movie.
Sweets had dozed off and was woken up by a nurse that had asked him to go into the waiting room so that they could change your dressings and take your vitals. When he entered the waiting room he was slightly surprised to see the entire team sitting and chatting lowly. When they noticed he had come out, Angela and Hodgins had rushed to embrace him. This was the first time that they had seen him since the accident. Cam was close behind them and handed him a new phone explaining that his had been fried and it was the least she could do. They all asked him how he felt and told him how glad they were that he was okay. “So, any change?” Booth asked as Sweets took a seat next to him.
“Not yet, she is doing fine all things considered, they are just waiting for her to wake up.” he answered staring down at his hands. How long does it take to change some bandages? he wondered. Truth be told, he just wanted to be with you. He had only been away from you side for ten minutes and it was already getting to him.
It was another thirty minutes until a doctor came out. “Is there a Dr. Lance Sweets here?” he asked loudly addressing the lobby.
“That’s me” Sweet’s answered and the rest of the group also stood up.
“Miss Y/l/n is awake and requesting you.” he smiled. ‘
Sweets was ecstatic and the rest of the group celebrated hugging one another. The stakes had been so high the last few days, but it was over now. Everyone was okay.
Sweets followed the doctor back to your room. It took everything in him not to jump on your bed. He was so happy to see you awake. “Have a nice nap?” he asked as he made his way to your side. The doctor had warned him that you might still be kinda out of it and that he should avoid talking about the vase or anything else that could cause you to panic or freak out.
“It was, except when this guy came in talking about psychological theories” you laughed.
Sweets was nearly in tears, he was so glad to hear that laugh again. And see your smile. “Hey now, you can’t cry or I’ll start crying and that is something neither of us wants to see” you replied trying to take it all in.
“I’m just so relieved that you are okay.” he explained as he bent down to kiss the top of your head. He went to hug you but quickly pulled away as it caused you to grunt in pain.
“I’m sorry” you apologized as he pulled away. You wished that you could hug him. .
“Y/n, you have absolutely nothing to be sorry for.” he answered resigning to sit in the chair beside your bed.
“Neither do you, none of this was your fault. I’m just sorry that your life was put in danger trying to protect me. If anything happened to you, I don’t know what I would do” you answered starting to get worked up again.
“Hey now- calm down. It’s okay. Everything is okay.” he assured you as he took your hand. The to of you just sat like that for a while being interrupted here and there by nurses coming in to check up on you and take your blood or run your vitals. After a while curiosity got the best of you and you asked him the question you had been dying to ask him since you woke up.
“Did you mean it?”
“Did I mean what?” he asked as he shifted towards you.
“When I was unconscious you said that you loved me. And it’s completely fine if it was a spur of the moment thing. Or if you meant it in a platonic way. I mean that makes sense actually. And we don’t have to make a big deal out of it. We can honestly just forget it ever happened if you want” you rambled on.
“I did” he replied stopping you.
“You did what?” you asked.
“I did mean it. I meant every word I said. Y/n, I am in love with you. I have had feelings for you for ages but I was always waiting for the right moment. And seeing you today made me realize that I am tired of waiting. Life is too short and unpredictable, and I want to spend mine with you.” he explained nervously.
“If I could I would get up and kiss you right now” you answered.
“Allow me” he said as he stood up and gently cradled her face in his hands before lowering his lips onto hers. The kiss was soft and simple. He had been wanting to do that for so long now. He slowly pulled away seeing the smile that lit up your face as you opened your eyes again. As happy as he was, he had decided that he had been selfish long enough and went to go get the others.
As soon as he walked into the waiting room, Booth noticed that something was different. “You kissed her didn’t you?” he asked immediately.
“What? Why would you say that?” he replied.
“He’s not denying it” Hodgins jumped in.
“Atta boy Sweets, it only took you two years” Angela added.
“Do you guys want to come back and see her or keep harassing me?” he laughed as they stood up to follow him. “Okay seriously though, she is fine, but extremely sore. No hugs or sudden movements and the Doctor said not to talk about anything that would upset her because she could tear her stitches.” he explained as they walked down the hall.
You were excited to see everyone. They all told you how relieved they were that you were okay and how if you needed literally anything that they would be there for you. Angela and Hodgins were going to stay with you while Booth and Brennan ran Sweets home to shower and grab some things so he could stay with you the next couple of days. Cam left shortly after they did. That is when Angela told you to spill about you and Sweets. You told her the entire conversation and the kiss. Hodgins was almost fangirling more than she was.
When Sweets got back he sent everyone home. It was three days later when you were allowed to leave with strict orders to take it easy. When the two of you arrived at your house Sweets turned to you “So I know this is insane, and I should have ran it by you first.” he started, “But with everything you have been through, I thought that maybe you would want to move in with me. We could grab some of your stuff. And then figure out to get you out of your lease. Or it doesn’t have to be permanent. I mean you don’t have to it was just an idea.” he rambled. This time you were able to cut him off with a kiss.
“That is a wonderful idea. Let’s go pack” you answered. He rushed around the car to let you out and help you inside not wanting to take any chances.
The two of you would slowly move your stuff into his place throughout the next week. It was during this time that you got to know each other better. You spent a lot of time just hanging out as you had many restrictions. Seven months later he asked you to marry him. And about a year after that the two of you had a son who you named Fin after his adopted parents the Finleys. There were many ups and downs, times of danger and stress, but the two of you loved each other and that is all that mattered.
