Title: Space Cowboys

Ken, if I ended up making this a fic I'm blaming you cause this prompt is PERFECT for them.

The Enterprise has been chosen to test out a prototype of what will eventually become the system for the holodeck. Kirk of course wants to be the one to try it, so he leaves Spock in charge and convinces McCoy to take the rest of the time off and join him. McCoy agrees to both have a break and to ensure that Jim doesn't hurt himself. Kirk chooses a Western setting since of course McCoy would love it and even since Spectre of the Gun he's wanted to do a Western-related thing without the 'we might die' part.

But of course, this is Star Trek and the holodeck NEVER goes well in Star Trek. So the two are having their fun, but a malfunction happens and Jim gets shot for real. It's nowhere vital, it's only the arm, but it hurts and is bleeding. Kirk can't get the communication to work, and the crew can't get the prototype shut down. To make it worse, another malfunction causes the bandits in the simulation to have alien tech, so needless to say McKirk aren't having a good day.

IDK what else I'd do, I'd probably have some kind of epic showdown and McCoy living out his cowboy fantasies... and my damsel in distress fantasies cause I'm me, sorry Bones. It would also probably be established McKirk and Kirk not so subtly using this as an excuse for a date cause they've both been busy. Kirk had fun, McCoy... well he ain't dead, that's gotta count for something right?

💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work? I've written it into a few fics and I keep forgetting to add it into more of them, but TOS Bones having nipple piercings just amuses me to no end. Bones having secret piercings or tattoos is a pretty consistent headcanon I have for him and I think other people should work it into their writing LOL

🏅 What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc). I recently hit 50 Star Trek fics posted on my ao3!

1. I’ve shipped spones for so long I honestly don’t really remember?? But their banter has always been my absolute favorite part of tos, and I am a SUCKER for the dynamic of “I don’t like you” to “you’re okay but I disagree with everything you say” to “oh shit I love arguing with you” to “oh shit I love /you/.” It’s just the best 

2. ((I think I accidentally answered this above lol)) I’ve always shipped spones though, deep in my heart.

3.I love Spock because he acts so serious all the time but he’s actually just a bastard lmao. I love his dry wit and his quick comebacks - the beginning of corbomite maneuver when he tells that guy that he should think about getting his adrenaline removed is the funniest thing ever. I love bones because I’m a sucker for the “grumpy man with a heart of gold” archetype. I love how passionate he is. I love how caring he is, even for people he doesn’t like very much. 

4. I really love the concept of their bantering just actually being their way of flirting all this time. I love fics where everyone knows they’re in love with each other but the two of them. I love love love spock learning how to accept his human side through bones’ needling and teachings about human customs. Really love the accidental vulcan bond formation trope too lol. 

Thank you for your responses! I feel so many of the reasons you do for liking them and as characters (Spock’s wit! Bones as a grumpy man with a heart of gold and their banter as flirting! I could go on) but now that you bring it up, it’s certainly has been awhile since I’ve seen any Spones accidental Vulcan bond formation fics. Anyone have any recs?

Character ask game, 6 and 21!

So there wasn't a character given, so I'm gonna go with McCoy for this ask. I hope that's okay!

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

Annoyance at the people you're taking care of not listening and taking proper care of themselves. As a teenager I was pretty much playing nurse to my dad due to his various sickness and medical issues. I loved my dad to death, he was a good man and I miss him so much, but the man would NOT LISTEN WHEN TOLD TO TAKE CARE OF HIMSELF. Not only did he tend to get himself hurt pretty regularly, but he'd still try to force himself to do stuff when not feeling well and he used to neglect his medication until one particular incident caused him a seizure when he was taking me to choir practice. It was so frustrating and while my mom is nowhere near as bad, she also tends to neglect her own health and it drives me insane. McCoy's a doctor who has to deal with hundreds of people and he has two certain idiots who do this frequently, and despite how frustrated he gets he still does everything possible for his patients. It's very relatable to me.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

When it comes to writing McCoy, he's by far the one I have the easiest time with. I don't think I have nay dislikes about writing him because of how easy he comes to me, and stuff I dislike reading (like him being made a full-on Vulcan racist) I avoid entirely. As for like, I like writing scenarios where McCoy needs to accept being given love and support. He gives that so willingly to Jim, Spock, and others who need it, which of course he does. He's a doctor, he's a caregiver, it's literally his job and the kind of man he is. But he also tends to just... not care about what happens to himself, look how easily he was willing to die in The Empath with zero regard to his own safety. It's almost as scary as it is admirable, and I just want the man to let himself accept that he needs to be cared for just as much as he gives it to everyone else. Canon focuses so much on him, assuring Jim or trying to make Spock let him help him, and I want him to be able to be assured that he can be reach out just as much as he is reached out to.

And on a lighter note, I love finding every possible reason I can to have Jim and/or Spock (mainly Spock) bridal carry him cause I am a romantic sap XD

For the fic ask game: 🧠🌝

🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?

I actually just came up with one yesterday. It's for a McKirk fic (Spock is there too) based on a moment from hen I was rewatching FMA Brotherhood. And no, it is NOT the chimera scene, THAT IS TOO EVIL. I won't spoil anything but in the final episodes one of the characters get their throat slashed to force another to do something bad, and I was hit with inspiration. I'm still thinking it over so it's nothing beyond a scene in my head, and I likely won't be working on it until after Trektober, but I'm excited for it~!

🌝 Who is one character you haven’t yet written for that you would like to?

Good question. I've been wanting to write more of the Bridge crew. My focus is very much on the Triumvirate, but I adore Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov too and I'd LOVE to do something with them. I'm hoping to do so in Trektober where I've already got one idea for a Sulu fic and I'm featuring Chapel pretty heavily in one as well, so we'll see~

So essentially some of us on the McSpirk Events Discord were talking about Jim giving Bones some self-defense lessons so that he could better protect himself. Thus the fic was born, but as I both lost the muse and had a hard time figuring out how to write the actual training, it didn't last long. I'm hoping to maybe repurpose it but as I'm likely not going to post the current version as is, I can share what I actually managed to write... but since the ask refuses to be published with the whole thing you can find it here. Hope you enjoy~
