Dear Gus & Magnus,
Gus had an accident on the playground at school today when he and his friend Jonathan collided and Gus ended up with a black eye. This is the photo Mom got from the school.

How to Get Rid of Puffy Eyes After Crying
We've all been there—after a good cry, you're left with puffy eyes that make you look more tired than you feel. But don’t worry, getting rid of that post-cry puffiness is easier than you think. In this post, I’ll walk you through 5 simple methods to help reduce that swelling and get your eyes back to normal.
Why Do Your Eyes Get Puffy After Crying?
Before diving into the remedies, it’s important to understand why your eyes get puffy after crying. There are two main reasons:
Water Retention: When you cry, your tear ducts release a lot of water. Some of this water is absorbed by the surrounding skin, causing the cells to swell, leading to puffiness.
Increased Blood Flow: Crying also causes the blood vessels around your eyes to dilate, increasing blood flow to the area. The skin under your eyes is very thin, making the dilation and inflammation of these blood vessels more visible, contributing to puffiness.
To reduce this puffiness, you need to drain the excess water and reduce the dilation of blood vessels. Here’s how you can do it:
1. Gentle Eye Massage
One of the most effective ways to reduce puffiness is by gently massaging the under-eye area. Here’s how:
Use your fingertips to apply light pressure in tiny, circular motions around your eyes, focusing on the bridge of your nose.
Be careful not to drag or stretch the delicate skin. The goal is to help move the trapped fluid away from the swollen area, allowing it to drain into the rest of your body.
This method helps to push the excess water out of the cells and reduces puffiness.
2. Apply Caffeine-Infused Skincare
Caffeine isn’t just for your morning cup of coffee—it can also work wonders for puffy eyes. Here’s why:
Caffeine is a Vasoconstrictor: Caffeine helps to constrict blood vessels, reducing the dilation and inflammation caused by crying.
How to Use It: Look for eye creams or serums that contain caffeine as a key ingredient. Apply it gently to the under-eye area to help bring the blood vessels back to their normal state, reducing puffiness.
3. Cold Compress
Cold therapy is a tried-and-true method for reducing inflammation. Applying something cold to the under-eye area can help constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling.
What to Use: You can use a chilled spoon, a bag of frozen peas, an ice cube wrapped in a cloth, or a cold eye gel mask.
How to Apply: Place the cold item on your under-eye area for a few minutes to reduce puffiness.
4. Tea Bags
Tea bags are another excellent remedy for puffy eyes, thanks to their multiple benefits:
Caffeine and Tannins: Like the caffeine in skincare products, the caffeine in tea bags acts as a vasoconstrictor, helping to reduce blood vessel dilation. Tannins in tea also help tighten the skin and reduce puffiness.
Chamomile Tea: If you use chamomile tea bags, you'll get the added benefit of anti-inflammatory properties, which can further reduce swelling.
How to Use:
Steep the tea bags in hot water to release their active ingredients.
Let them cool in the refrigerator.
Place the cold tea bags on your under-eye area for a few minutes.
5. Elevate Your Head
Lastly, gravity can help reduce puffiness, but you can speed up the process by elevating your head.
How to Do It: When you go to bed, use an extra pillow or two to keep your head elevated. This position encourages fluid to drain away from your under-eye area, reducing puffiness faster.
Bonus Tip: Combine this method with a cold compress or tea bags for even better results.
By following these five tips, you can effectively reduce puffy eyes after crying and get back to looking and feeling your best.
