Swollfest Fishing Rodeo and Its Rules

Dr. Nick Rauber, a dentist treating patients in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, earned his DDS from the Louisiana State School of Dentistry. Innovations and Research Process - The Muscular Dystrophy Association

An experienced dentist and partner at the Aesthetic Dentistry Group, Dr. Nicholas “Nick” Rauber founded the Swollfest Fishing Rodeo when he was in high school. Since then, Nick Rauber, DDS, has overseen its growth each year and donates the rodeo’s proceeds to a variety of charities, such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Although it was established specifically to fight muscular dystrophy, the Muscular Dystrophy Association has expanded its scope throughout its 65-year history to include all neuromuscular diseases, from acid maltase deficiency to ZASP-related myopathy. Today, the MDA connects people with volunteer opportunities, supports individuals with neuromuscular diseases, and offers resources and transitional services, in addition to advocacy and outreach work. The MDA also leads a vital research program, and every proposal is held to the same thorough, rigorous review process before its funding request is approved or denied. Because it funds approximately 250 projects every year, the MDA expert committee first reviews a proposal, which is then filtered to one of four specific subject committees. After being reviewed for potential flaws and possible innovations, the approved research is monitored annually for its progress and the ways in which MDA funding is spent. Some of the active funded grants include research on the impact of improved muscle function on nebulin-based nemaline myopathy and ways to reverse nitric oxide synthase dysfunction in people with muscular dystrophy.
