Dr. Nicholas Rauber treats patients in the Baton Rouge community at Aesthetic Dentistry Group. He offers a full range of services, including fillings, dental implant crowns, bridges, and root canals. Living with diabetes can impact an individual’s life, particularly when it comes to what can and cannot be eaten. Fortunately, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) provides a wealth of information on healthy dietary habits and helpful tips for grocery shopping. The ADA is particularly helpful when it comes to translating nutrient content claims on food packaging. For some shoppers, the words such as “less,” “reduced” and “low” on a product may amount to nothing more than semantics, but for someone with diabetes, the nutrient content of every purchase is important. Products adhering to government regulations cannot claim their product to have less sodium, for example, unless there is 25 percent less sodium compared to a regular serving. Since then, Nick Rauber, DDS, has overseen its growth each year and donates the rodeo’s proceeds to a variety of charities, such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Although it was established specifically to fight muscular dystrophy, the Muscular Dystrophy Association has expanded its scope throughout its 65-year history to include all neuromuscular diseases, from acid maltase deficiency to ZASP-related myopathy. Today, the MDA connects people with volunteer opportunities, supports individuals with neuromuscular diseases, and offers resources and transitional services, in addition to advocacy and outreach work. The MDA also leads a vital research program, and every proposal is held to the same thorough, rigorous review process before its funding request is approved or denied. Because it funds approximately 250 projects every year, the MDA expert committee first reviews a proposal, which is then filtered to one of four specific subject committees. After being reviewed for potential flaws and possible innovations, the approved research is monitored annually for its progress and the ways in which MDA funding is spent. Some of the active funded grants include research on the impact of improved muscle function on nebulin-based nemaline myopathy and ways to reverse nitric oxide synthase dysfunction in people with muscular dystrophy.

American Diabetes Association Award Honors Devoted Fathers

CCA Louisiana Project Installs Floating Wetland Habitats in Grand Isle

In addition to serving patients at Aesthetic Dentistry Group in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Nicholas "Nick" Rauber, DDS works for the betterment of the wider community through a variety of philanthropic efforts. As the founder and director of the Swollfest Fishing Rodeo, Dr. Nick Rauber has helped raise nearly $1 million for charities including the American Diabetes Association, also working alongside organizations such as the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), of which he is a lifetime member. A national nonprofit organization active in 17 states, the CCA works to promote the conservation of America’s marine and coastal resources through initiatives in research, public education, legislative advocacy, and environmental preservation. On April 22, 2015, CCA Louisiana commemorated Earth Day with the Floating Islands Restoration Project, which enhanced the plant and animal habitats of wetland areas in Grand Isle. Sponsored by the CCA Building Conservation Trust, the project also benefited from the support of Shell Oil Company, Lafourche Parish, Entergy, and Martin Ecosystems, as well as numerous local volunteers. Nearly 100 students from Holy Rosary School and Golden Meadow Middle School joined over 50 volunteers from their schools, the project’s corporate sponsors, and CCA Louisiana to construct approximately 6,000 square feet of wetland habitat. The volunteers built the innovative BioHaven Floating Islands, a technology developed by Martin Ecosystems, using native plants such as smooth cord grass, mangrove, and seashore paspalum. After assembling the 8-by-25-foot habitats on land, the group installed them in the water to the north of the LA 1 highway. The floating habitats will allow new plant life to take root beneath the surface of the water, in addition to strengthening the protective environment for existing plant and fish populations.

Swollfest - Raising Nearly $1 Million for Charitable Causes

Baton Rouge, Louisiana dentist Nicholas “Nick” Rauber, DDS, founded Swollfest in 1997. The annual fishing tournament gives Dr. Nick Rauber an avenue to raise proceeds for charitable organizations including Canine Companions for Independence, the American Diabetes Association, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Since its inception, Swollfest has raised nearly $1 million. The tournament has grown from its initial eight participants and today draws more than 600 participants and 100 sponsors each year. Participants take to the waters for three days and are required to keep their catches iced until designated weigh in times at the Sand Dollar Marina Pavilion. The participant with the best catch in each division - coastal, inshore, and blue water - receives a prize. The best overall boat also receives recognition. The most recent Swollfest took place June 11th to June 13th, 2015. The event included live music and artistic displays in addition to fishing. Harry Hawney from team Anteater Jigs caught the biggest fish, a Warsaw grouper weighing in at 80.65 pounds. Other notable catches were a 64-pound yellowfin tuna and a 57-pound alligator gar.
